@@Learntheharmonica yes. I've been " on the hunt" so to speak for about 6 months or so. I play 2nd pos. mostly except a little Jimmy Reed 1st pos. high end blow bends.
Most blues recordings using 3rd are in a major key - blowing the family jewels, Kansas City, she’s sweet, I ain’t got you, etc. I think it’s important for new players to know 3rd is good for major too.
Yep, it's a really expressive position. Paul deLay was one of the best for 3rd in my opinion, did stuff that went way beyond the norm. Who do you like to listen to for major 3rd songs? Cheers. Liam
LearnTheHarmonica.com I think you nailed it with Delay. With most players, I can tab out in my head what they’re doing. With Delay, most of the time, I have no idea what he’s doing. His chromatic playing was beyond innovative.
To whom so ever felt inclined to down vote this video,I feel inclined to say this.Although the human race is the most technologically and arguably socially advance species on our planet,we often encounter instances where individuals mistake true knowledge as a right of birth given simply to be ever so easily squandered.Excellentlly presented sir,you have reached out of your own accord to wonderfully articulate and administer precise yet clearly understandable information.I for one greatly appreciate what you have done here.
Hi my friend. From being a young kid in the 60's I have loved harp and have tried several times to learn how to play. although I have managed a few simple tunes playing straight harp I have always struggled with 2nd possision getting the bends, however I have just purchased a diatonic C harmonica and decided to give it another try and have really enjoyed watching several youtube tutorials esp your stuff. One of my favourite pop songs at the moment is a song called set fire to the rain by Adele and whilst in my car today it came on the radio so I took out the harp to see if the Key fell into place and it did in certain parts so when I got home I googled what key the song is and it's DM. then I looked at a key chart and DM was shown in 3rd poss on the c harp...brilliant found the song backing track on youtube but then I got stuck because I forgot I can't play any scales yet although I did pull off a couple of beaut notes that fitted in. Anyway I just wondered if you could maybe do the tune on here with a backing track or without to give an idea of when to play and when not to so to speak plus I would just love to hear you play this tune in DM. Thanks buddy hope you can. x Phil.
Another great quick cheat for third position, get a Seydel 'Paddy' Harp - the 3 blow gets you a low A. Great video this Liam - and its thanks to Adam Gussow, your good self and Tomlin Leckie that I started harmonica just over a year ago. Here's me on a Paddy Harp doing the sax solo for Sade's Smooth Operator, C Paddy Harmonica in D minor as described in this video: ruclips.net/video/rlTxPgN0zoo/видео.html - thanks for all your great videos Liam!
Hi Liam, just staring out on the 3rd position. Just wondered if I was at a blues jam and the band were playing in the key of C, could I play 3rd position in Bflat? Instead of the high pitch F in 2nd position Or does the band have to be playing in a minor key for the Bflat to work. Great lesson thanks 😎
Great question. You can certainly play in 3rd to a major blues, you'll tend to sound more minor than in 2nd but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. When you're in 3rd pos, if you don't avoid the -3 and -7 then you'll get a slightly more major sound. Also when it goes to the IV chord, you can just play your regular 2nd position licks from holes 1-6 :)
Great lesson. One question: why do we call it the third position, when the draw on the third hole is to avoid? (the second position starts on two draw!.. thát makes sense :-)
Hi Niek, it's to do with the circle of fifths. If you follow round the circle, it's the third key. More infomation here: ruclips.net/video/go-KvlvHYV8/видео.html
Immediately if not sooner😂😂😂 wise words from your wife😂 hey Liam can you do a harmonica cover for baby Hold Me Close. By Jerry Lee Lewis. Thank you in advance.
Hi Bob. 3 draw is indeed to be avoided, but not if you bend it. We are trying to avoid notes, not holes: there is a difference, because when you bend hole 3 draw you get a different note. Same hole, different note. Hope this makes sense. Cheers. Liam
I thought Dm was D E F G A Bb C ( relative Major = F Major F G A Bb C D E ). Why don’t you include the Bb - 3 draw half step bend/ 8 overblow in your lesson? Be easy on me , I’m just a beginner! Haha
Hi Jason, you're right that D is the relative minor of F, and so the Dm natural minor scale contains the notes you mention. This lesson isn't a lesson on minor scales as such, it's just a quick way in to playing notes that will fit. So in a sense I'm giving you a broken minor scale. The reason is basically because I didn't want to complicate things with the overblow (most of my viewers don't overblow) and I wanted the notes to be consistent in the lower and higher parts of the harp. Hope this makes sense! Cheers. Liam
LearnTheHarmonica.com Hi Liam! Thank you so much for responding, it means a lot to me! Yes, that does make sense not to include the overblow in order to simplify things. I love your videos and continue to view regularly. Many thanks for your great generosity in teaching! Cheers! Jason
Haha! My exwife used to say the same thing when I'd start to make love to her and ask when she wanted me to wrap up the session. "Immediately, if not sooner!"

I think Liam is the best harmonica teacher on RUclips. He breaks it down so well, and really gives good examples of how to use the notes.
This is the golden trick for 3rd position. Feel the groove and remember what you cannot play (3d, 7d) and have fun.
Yes! :)

Your harmonica has a Howard levy sound are the reeds modified for overblows like he's known for?
Hi Hooks Lion, thanks for your question. I'm just using an out-of-the-box Hohner Rocket in this video. Hope this helps! Liam
Hello, love your Vids btw! Question are we mostly playing in a Minor Key when in third position?
Hi Thomas, thanks for asking. Yes most of the time 3rd position is used for playing in minor keys. Not always, but most of the time :) Cheers. Liam
thank you thank you thank you....
