  • In this video I'm installing Windows, Batocera and Ubuntu Linux on Atari VCS.
This is a walkthrough of creating a multi-boot system that can run original Atari OS and other operating systems.
The video is a continuation of previous video, where I demonstrate how to install essential upgrades.

    - Etcher
    Download from here: etcher.balena.io/
and install. This will help creating flash drive
    - Ubuntu
    Download from here: ubuntu.com/download/desktop/t...
and create a flash drive with Etcher.
    - Batocera
Download "Desktop, Laptop etc." image from here: batocera.org/download
Here's how to create Batocera flash drive: jilaxzone.com/2022/03/25/begi...
    - Windows 11
Download "Create Windows 11 Installation Media" from here: www.microsoft.com/software-do...
    - rEFInd
Download flash drive image form here: sourceforge.net/projects/refin...
Download config/icons pack from here: drive.google.com/file/d/1tpAK...

Atari VCS BIOS passwords (make sure to use US layout keyboard!)
    Try this one first: Atar!C3l3br8te$50Ye4r$
    Note: that's lower case 'L' between C3 and 3B
Try this one as well: Piano18482
If none of the two passwords work please downgrade the BIOS.

Ok, I've figured it out. To use one of the partitions of the new SSD in Atari OS you have to format the entire SSD FIRST in Atari OS to be a storage partition the size of the entire SSD.
Then you boot with the Ubuntu Live and resize that partition to a smaller partition, then now you have install or create as many other partitions you want.
I'm not sure if AtariOS needs it's storage partition to be the first partition in the SSD or there's something special when AtariOS formats that partition.
But I'm glad that after 3 days finding with this I was able to have all 4 OSes working fine!
Bottom line is, at least as of today 03/03/2024 Atari OS up-to-date, doesn't allow you to use a ext4 partition formatted by Ubuntu or like I said, that is not the first partition, I didn't test that part.
Bu thank you so much for this video, of all videos about this, yours is by far the most helpful!!!!

So all you did was format with Atari first, then ran Ubuntu off of a drive to resize the partition, then the rest is as it is in the video? Thanks in advance

Thanks so much for such a detailed set of instructions.
Quite a bit more work than I expected, but I forgot I would have to hassle with BIOS.
    Damned PCs!

    This is absolutely amazing!
The work you put in to this is fantastic and it was clear and easy to follow.
Love having Windows 10, Batocera, and Ubuntu Mate all working on my Atari now :D

Nice video!!! I bought this console a few months ago and it is still in the box new. I just got around to looking for videos on how to overcome the BIOS password nonsense as well as installing Windows using and this and your last video. Great job! You are a smart person! Thanks for all the instructions - cannot wait to do these steps once I open my Ataris VCS from the box. I am definitely going to add RAM as well since I also have the 8 GB version from Atari. Also I appreciate you showing how rEFIND works and how to get that setup as well. I have struggled with other boot loader options in the past and this one seems to be the best! Thanks again for your thorough instructions. Take care.

Hey buddy, I did exactly what you did, all OSses are working fine BUT from Atari OS I can't install or move games to the ext4 partitions I create on Ubuntu, when I try to move from the main drive it says Failed to move, if I install from the store it installs but then it doesnt show as installed when I look at the Storage section not the game shows in the dashboard.
But if I put a USB drive then it works fine. I wonder if there is something special when creating the partition so Atari OS can use it for games.

Greetings .. i tried to add SteamOS and mint 21.3. Both failed but I was able to load POP-OS to the add on SATA drive. While an NVME drive fit, it did not work...

    HELP!
Tried adding Windows to SSD…. Everything worked except I wanted to boot to Atari OS and use boot manager when I wanted to run Windows…. After changing the boot sequence back to USB>emmc>SSD, I can no longer access the BIOS… Instead, I get a boot choice of “Atari Slot A” or “Atari Slot B”… also I no longer can boot to a USB including the Atari PC mode USB….So now I can only boot to Atari OS…. Any ideas how I can get back into BIOS?

maybe i'm doing something wrong - I have build 100 maybe 1000 windwos computers over the year - and this box is a nightmare installing windows - i am using ventoy and it gives me errors writing the internat sata 3 ssd - then the bios does some weird stuff and tries to update - will keep going

I keep getting error messages trying to install windows onto my M.2 drive. It says "We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the setup log files." I'm not sure what to do next. any advice?

Did you purchase the drive they suggested? It must be an SSD version drive. Not NVME.

I'm probably just going to add windows. If that is the case. Will just doing the first part with windows be enough for me?

Also, I'd like to run MAME for arcade emulation. Will it run ok with just the Atari bios and Windows?

I didn’t disable the emmc w the Atari OS and it gave me some problems. I have windows on the internal ssd and installed w the drive like you did. It boots to windows automatically now and I have to hold esc to get back to the Atari OS emmc. It works still but wish it was easier to switch between the two

You could use efivars (linux) to modify boot drive. or install rEFInd and it'll make you life easier...
