    Dang it. Forgot to mention they also have pull ups that they have to do in Ranger school for their PT test. Oh well..... Do you think a soldier should be called a Ranger if they completed Range school or do you feel only those that are actually in the 75th Ranger Regiment should be called Rangers?

      Knowin quite a few Rangers myself. No just because you have a tab doesn’t mean you should go around saying you are a Ranger. Rangers who belong to the Regiment are Rangers. Yes the tab carries a lot of weight when it comes to leadership qualifications but don’t go saying you are special operations ranger bad ass high speed mo fo who kicks doors in and caps people. You could be a rear echelon fobbit and have a Ranger tab.

    So much of the confusion between being Ranger Qualified (the tab) and being a Ranger (scroll) could be cleared up by renaming Ranger School to something else. Everyone's agreed that both are tough and both provide the intended training. But they are not the same thing.

    People think Rangers are somehow less "Elite" because RASP is just 8 weeks. People Compare BUD/S and say how its much longer but forget Rangers have already have done AIT/BCT for 15 weeks then 3 weeks of Airborne then pre RASP of 3 weeks and then 8 weeks RASP. Thats 29 weeks from start if enlistment to Ranger Battalion which at that point the training to be a Ranger just begins. You don't just get to stay a Ranger because you passed RASP. Many will be RFSD. Rangers are pipe hitters

  • @kevincantrell6295
    @kevincantrell6295 5 лет назад +13

    Let me explain why a Tab doesnt make you a Ranger over a Scroll. The Ranger Tab is a leadership school. When you go to RIP (when I was in) or RASP (now). RIP was a gut check to see if you would quit based on stress and if you can think while being stressed out and lack of sleep. This is essential for a Ranger. Once you get to Bat you learn how to be a Ranger with real world training. You do EVERYTHING they do in Ranger school. You go on a list for Ranger school once you get to Bat. This list is determined by your performance in Bat and either after you do boards to become protomable then you get the school (again leadership school). By the time you get there everything in RNger school is second nature to a Ranger. In some cases it is looked at as vacation from Bat to be at "school". Its a bit like have an active duty soldier go back to basic after 2 years in active duty. So being a Ranger with a scroll is very different from being taught Ranger leadership tactics. I hope this helps. Life in Bat is very different than life in regular Army. I hope that helps. Not trying to nit pic just explaining why you are not viewed as a Ranger unless you wear the scroll.

    If I had a Ranger tab, I'd say I was "Ranger Qualified" or had attended Ranger school but if someone called me a "Ranger" I would not be mad. I'd add that some combat veterans: 11Bs did get "Ranger" tabs by being attached to Ranger units in combat then serving with honor or bravery. COL David Hackstraw a former military writer & Army veteran served in Korea. He got a Ranger tab that way. I think WWll had soldiers go directly into Ranger units too but I may be wrong.

      There would still have been training requirements in that era. In WW2 they may have recruited non serving straight in but they would have been required to do training.
      I am sure people who served with them in a support capacity may have by way of battle experience been accepted in but that would have been very rare.

      Jeffrey Lillibridge C'mon now Ranger, you learned the Ranger heritage just like I did. Do you remember the essay you wrote in that nice warm classroom with the lights low, while you were on your 5th or 6th day of averaging 1.5 hours of sleep per day and hungry enough to eat your eraser and ask for seconds. I'll never forget it "You all know the Ranger Heritage. Tell me what it means to be a Ranger. Close a fuckin eye and you might as well go on to bed because I'll make sure you aren't selected even if you finish RIP". I know my fortitude and quasi hallucination based essay didn't come from the thoughts of kitted out Special Operations Rangers (even us ass kicking, pussy getting 2nd Btn badasses) it was the Rangers who took out the guns atop the cliffs of Normandy even though the Intel was shit and they had to go find them in the dark with only their guts and a hunch to guide them kliks through Nazi infested terrain and take out those guns and they did, why because they HAD to, if those pieces had been active D-day flops, and we never get a foothold unto the mainland. So what's a Ranger? Is it really a Reg or is it someone who proven that no matter what it takes they will drive on until the mission is complete, make an INDEPENDENT decision and eat what ever shit is necessary to follow through on that decision and complete the mission even if the decision is wrong you will fuckin push until it works. A Ranger is someone who has proven that he can and will make a decision and make that decision work no matter what and the Tab is his Brand.

      Happened upon the video screwing around the tubes.. neat. I have read the comments and seen different people argue for the position Rangers with the Tab are Rangers too. I am sorry, but being Ranger Qualified is different than being in the Regiment. One is a Special Operations Soldier that is specifically schooled for the missions and operations within the RGT and the other is Ranger Qualified, the premium sign of leadership in almost any unit. YOU can both claim the title Ranger, very few will say different, but a Ranger is one who is or was stationed in the 75th Ranger RGT. You can be a Ranger and never have gone to Ranger school .You can go to Ranger school and never be a Batt Boy. Now keep in mind the school pre-dates the RGT. The issue here is that a Tab is a qualifier "tab", the Scroll a way of life. It was not always the case. There was a time where the Tab was all there was and if you were tabbed, you were almost never called out by your rank but by the Honorific "Ranger." How do I know this? Google. Actually we had a few Vietnam Rangers in my unit when I first got there, before I ever even considered trying to get a slot in the school or going to the RGT. Hell you had to go through a local RIP to even be considered for a school slot and it only got worse you had another RIP and after that if you got accepted into the RGT.. well Ranger school was easier than a day in the RGT and comabt was easier than Ranger school. ... in a later unit we had a few Rangers, that never went to the school, but served in the RGT I would love to see someone tell them they were not Rangers because they wre not tabbed. Tabbed or not if they served in the RGT or they went to the school, they have a right to claim Ranger, but there is a difference that is only important to certain people. I am no longer in the miitary and have been out well over 30 years and the black and gold still holds true.

    Even if you were speaking to someone that isn't more than passingly familiar with the Army saying you are (or were) a Ranger would strongly imply you're serving (or did) with the 75th. I'm not knocking anyone that's been through Ranger school, it's not an easy thing to get through. But getting the tab alone doesn't make you a Ranger. Just like going to medical school doesn't make you a medical doctor if you elect not to take your licensing exams and practice medicine.

    • @parawill7074

      You are wrong. A graduate of Ranger school is a Ranger. The 75th RR is a SOF unit, but the term "Ranger" existed long before they were established. Service in the Ranger regiment or being a graduate of the Ranger course makes you a Ranger, simple as that. We have always considered our Ranger qualified soldiers as "Rangers" and service in the 75th never mattered, nor should it.

    • @damiensouth1160

      Para will you are absolutely correct. I earned my Ranger Tab and became a Ranger and remained 82nd for 16 months until an NCO slot became available in 2nd Btn, upon receiving my new orders I became a Special Operations Ranger. The only thing that changed were my orders (and my kit, Hooah). If you apply that logic in reverse, would a POG attached to a Ranger Company in a support compasity for a deployment, be a Ranger? They do receive Ranger kit and their DD214 will show they deployed as part of said company. The Tab makes a Ranger, Not the orders.

      Umm... YES, considering AB is a qualification and the last time a AB Infantrymen jumped into an active combat zone was WW2... Id say that the 5 Static line jumps you do actually overly prepares you for the needs of the modern Infantrymen when it comes to actually jumping into combat, 1 time is enough to concur any doubts but that would literally be taking away the easiest and funnest part of AB school if we didn't get a 5 jump minimum. AB school has very very little to do with the act of jumping and a whole lot to do with making you a better Infantrymen, an Infantrymen that's been trained on engaging and destroying targets behind enemy lines with minimal equipment, even less support and a whole lot of tactics and balls. "They have us surrounded, boy are they fucked." NEXT

    A recruiter at my station who deployed with the Rangers (he's a 10th Mountains Infintry guy) said there's 3 thirds to being a Ranger.
    A 1/3rd Ranger is someone who's Ranger qualified (been through Ranger school)
    A 2/3rds Ranger is Ranger qualified & passed RASP, and is part of the regiment.
    A full 3/3 Ranger is a qualified Ranger who is in the regiment who has deployed with them.

    My cousin was in the 75th Rangers, he told me about how he jumped out of a helicopter with his squad but for some reason he missed the LZ and landed on the roof of an enemy building, he couldn't get to his rifle in time he could only get to his hand gun so he had it out trained on where the enemy was coming from and when the enemy rounded the corner he just dropped as the hillside behind him lit up with gunfire from his squad. If I were to have seen something like that I think it would have broken me to the point where I would never leave the Army, just to make sure someone else doesn't get broken like that in my place.

    for the people wondering the difference between SF and a SOF Ranger. SF (Green Berets) deploy in ODA's (Operational Detachment Alpha's/ Small teams) of 12 operators to teach and lead; occasionally conventional US infantry units, lesser trained foreign forces, etc.. different tactics. It's rare, if ever, you'll see Green Berets deploy in platoons with other GB's for missions. Typically 1-2 GB's will be in control of a large group and go on missions with them to train and teach them. Foreign Internal Defense and Unconventional Warfare is their primary mission set. They are teachers, which is why their training (Q Course) is much longer than RASP and RS. They not only have to be able to do what Rangers do, but be able to communicate effectively to other individuals who not only do not speak the same language as them, but have much less training than even the US's conventional Infantry. 75th Rangers on the other hand, are a Direct Action force. (Primarily night raids, seizing airfields, capturing or killing high valued enemies of the nation, and conducting airborne operations). They also deploy in Platoons exclusively with other Rangers. Rangers go on missions with Rangers, Green Beret's go on missions with other conventional forces. Hope that cleared up some of the confusions ive been seeing in the comments!

    Ranger school sounds a lot like something we have in the British army. We've got P Company which gives you the airborne parachute qualification but it doesn't make you a Paratrooper. So I'd agree that you're only a Ranger once you're in the 75th just like you aren't a Para in Britain until you're in the parachute regiment.

    I went to ranger school in Phan Rang Vietnam in 1969. It was 8 weeks of weapons training, heavy weapons and small unit tactics in the jungle. there was training from shotgun to shoulder fired grenades to mortars to hand to hand. they skipped the pushups, the rolling around in mud, the hanging from wires. We were to go back to our units and train up others. We did get attacked, but the war was over for us. I can't imaging taking all that training in the states and then no war to go to.

      It depends on why they left. Guys leave the regiment for a variety of reasons. ETS, RFS, medical discharge/retirement, hiatus from deployments (with prewritten orders to return), etc are all fairly common reasons why people leave. My take is that Rangers serve in the regiment and the school is a school. The reason why is because Ranger units far predated Ranger School.

    Technically, completing Ranger School does make you a Ranger, as in being Ranger qualified, but does not make you a member of the Ranger Regiment. Just like completing jump school does make you Airborne as in Airborne qualified, but does not make a you a member of 82nd Airborne Division. I understand the difference between wanting to distinguish between a tab wearer versus being a member of a specific unit. (I get that!) But you can't take away from completing a really difficult school and learning the tradecraft of Army Rangers as simply being someone allowed to wear a patch. Members of the 75th Ranger Regiment are the only ones who go out of their way to make this distinction. Graduates of the Army Sniper school, Jumpmaster and SERE, etc., are given the title whether they ever perform the duties or not. Btw, what do you call someone who is with the Ranger Training Brigade, or someone who is with Regiment but not even been to RIP or someone who works at the Pentagon wearing class A s everyday but spent 12 years in the Regiment?

  • @ernestpaul2484
    @ernestpaul2484 6 лет назад

    I am a former Ranger from the 1/75th. This is back when we still wore our full color stumpy scrolls on our cammies, 78'/79' time period. A Ranger is one who serves in a Ranger Bn. or now a days, in the Ranger Regt. A Ranger qualified soldier is one who has successfully completed Ranger School and is authorized to wear the Ranger Tab. The Regt. Ranger is an individual who may or may not be Ranger School qualified, yet. I say "yet" because most individuals serving in a Ranger unit are normally Ranger qualified before leaving the Regt. You may have left the Ranger Regt. and still not Ranger qualified, but you were still a Ranger during your time there. However, once you leave you are no longer a Ranger in an operational sense. Being Ranger qualified is validation that you have/had the leadership ability to command a team of soldiers in missions who were just as physically spent and mentally exhausted as you were during your time in the barrel and to complete the missions at hand. The Ranger Tab is a leadership tab. The Ranger scroll is a unit designation patch. They are two different animals and should be treated as such. RGR CLS 8-79, RI 85'/88'.

    Ok, this is an honest question not meant to start a fight or anything. I served in the Marine Corps as an 0311, infantry.
    We did all the same training as these "elite" soldiers do. We did mountain warfare and winter mountain warfare training at MCI Bridgeport, CA. We did desert warfare training at MCB 29 Palms, CA. We did jungle warfare training with you guys at Ft. Sherman, Panama. We also did surf survival training with the Amtracs at Camp Pendleton.
    My quesstion is, doesn't the average Army grunt get this training?

    • @leeglaser9042
      @leeglaser9042 5 лет назад +2

      Training is one thing. What you actually do is another. While regular Army and Rangers frequently attend the same schools they don't do the same missions. That's part of the big argument of RASP vs Ranger School. I graduated Ranger School with a laundry specialist who went back to being a laundry specialist after school. There's nothing really elite about being a tabbed laundry specialist although he was a better trained laundry specialist.

      Marines are an elite service but they are not special operations. Just as Airborne are elite or a pilot is elite but none are special operations.
      Normal Army training would not be as elite as Marines who have a very special role in the US military.
      Army does not do all the training Marines do. USMC are soldiers of the marine warfare division of the US armed services. They were always considered elite and hardy.

    My brother retired as a SGM SF 18E, retired out of 5th Group. He earned his SF tab first then went to Ranger School to earn his Ranger tab. He actually thought Ranger school was too soft. Too many individuals received GOs for subpar effort or results. The hardest course he ever attended in the Army was the Combat Divers Course. He said this was NO joke and witnessed many operator types quit!

      Combat Divers Course is the hardest in the Army. Water makes cowards out of us.

    • @dannythomas4250
      @dannythomas4250 6 лет назад

      Erik Arteaga no, you can have tattoos in any military branch or MOS, just has to follow the principal guidelines

      Erik Arteaga im not sure of the current policy but when I left 2nd Btn in 2005 you couldn't have anything that would show while in BDUs or Class A's however they could show in Class B's.

      Rangers are known for our "Why is that important and could it be done better differently even if it means being unconventional and not completely straight laced." mindsets and that allows for a little wiggle room on certain regs just because that mindset often comes with a slight tendency to push regs to the limit just because. Granted I've been out of the Bat for 13 years.

    • @christopherchaos

      Yes. But an officer will also have to attend Ranger school as well since it’s required for NCOs and officers.

    I’d equate it to being a 5 jump chump. You got your wings but are you really a paratrooper or just jump qualified? Otherwise ranger school is just another course, albeit a tough one you completed. 75th is the real deal, and within a couple of years go to the “school” which should just be a formality for anyone serving in the 75th for any length of time.

      Kian Siong it's a school that you can apply for while in any stage of 11B (Infantry) evolution. Standard Infantry units all the way up to Delta have sniper teams.

    Ranger qualified is just that.
    It means you are capable of progressing and it’s an achievement worth recognition. I suspect that opens the door for the future if your still to immature to press forward.

      Skyler McMurray I just went through MEPS and swore in as a 25P Option 40.
      I had to go through a secret security interview. I’m not sure if that was for the 75th or for my MOS though.

    So if I wanted to become a ranger in the 75th, I would go to basic, then rasp, then later down the line go to ranger school, because I plan on being in the army for a while, then when I complete ranger school, I can go back to the 75th in my unit?????

    • @christopherchaos
      @christopherchaos  6 лет назад

      Yes. If you were already in the 75th and did ranger school you would just go back to your unit in the Rangers when you were done. Unless you were at that point a noncommissioned officer and failed ranger school cuz in that case you are required to have ranger school. So I don’t know if they would have you try again or if they would kick you out of the Rangers and send you to a regular unit.
