I love how Bernstein and Zimerman embrace each other at the end of the concert, like a very old friend.
Bernstein, at his age, surely knows that will be one of his last few concerts, and you can see how he immersed himself in the music and enjoyed throughout the performance. Zimerman, on the contrary, is in his prime day, still having lots of time to perform great music. It seems to me that the two masters, through the hands of the legendary Beethoven, has connected each other, that Bernstein knows great music will never die as there will always be young fellows to come with. It is a symbol of passing on a treasure given to humanity. Truly magical moment.

If there is a better performance of the 4th, I want to hear it. I love the obvious affection between Bernstein and Zimmerman. In the first movement after KZ plays a solo part Bernstein looks at him as if to say Yeah, that was great. It reminds me of Jazz musicians who acknowledge each other after great solos. I love the 4th probably more than any other classical piece of music. It covers so many emotions - joy and sorrow, and always moves me to tears. This is a great performance by all.

Indeed was a brilliant interpretation and performance of the G Major.
Loved how Bernstein signaled Zimmerman who was in charge, when Zimmerman started conducting.
I don’t want to take away from his brilliant conducting skills. Zimmerman is a brilliant conductor/Pianist.
As I read some of the comments I agree that this was a splendid performance.
However, for me, the performance that fulfills all my Beethoven G Major needs is without a doubt the Szell/Fleisher collaboration.
Fleisher had a remarkable understanding of this pice.

To me, what makes Zimerman about the top Pianist is that he plays every note with the most intense sensibility to what Beethoven would have played. He can play loud and bright but, what separates he from the rest is his ability to touch the notes with such delicacy that they can just be heard. That's a perfect touching pianist. When I was being taught Piano. My teacher said that Franz Liszt used to play each note with each finger from as quiet as he could gladually getting as loud as he could , then go back in reverse with each finger. It used to take up hours out of my day just to complete this exercise. Now, I get to watch it in it's perfection.

A delightful performance! I started to say this is my favorite Beethoven piano concerto -- then I realized I could with equal truth say this is my favorite piano concerto -- then, one thought later, yes, Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 is simply my favorite concerto! Period! In any case, I have attended and listened to many performances of this wonderful work, so comparisons come to mind at many passages throughout this excellent reading by Krystian Zimerman and Leonard Bernstein. Zimerman's approach is sometimes more brittle than I'm used to, pounding on the keys a bit and setting a breakneck pace at times when I don't expect it. At the other end of the emotional range of the piece, he comes up with a tenderness that brings out the beauty of some of the melodic lines and cadences in a way I haven't heard before. He grabs my attention from the first moment and keeps me engrossed throughout, eager to share his understanding of the piece. Meanwhile the musical narrative of the orchestra is richly and superbly detailed with Bernstein's effusive conducting. Maybe it's just because this is Beethoven's Fourth, but I think this may be the best I have ever heard from Bernstein. I'll be listening to this one again and again.

(Translation in English of my Dutch comment): In 1989 I was looking up to the sky, it had already gone dark, there was a clear sky and yet there were no stars to be seen. I thought this was strange and I was wondering why that was. Could it be the citylights? But now, 32 years later, I know the real answer: it was because the pianist Zimerman, along with the Wiener Philharmoniker orchestra, was “playing the stars out of the sky” (a Dutch expression meaning they performed excellently). Really phe-no-me-nal indeed the way they were performing! On hearing this wonderful masterpiece of music my tears came, I couldn’t help crying. And the way Zimerman and Bernstein were embracing each other, it was really moving me! Just Great!

    Zimmerman did a great job.
I saw this in Carnegie Hall, 1975.
    The soloist was Andre Watts.
    He was great too.
I think the soloist needs to be under 40 years to nail this thing.
    Huge power required.
    What a tribute to Beethoven.

Notevole prestazione di Zimmerman supportato da un suono splendido della Filarmonica di Vienna e dalla maestria di L. Bernstein alla direzione. Una versione del 4 concerto assolutamente di assoluto rilievo. Complimenti!!

Beyond sublime! Most beautiful Piano Concerto ever written by anyone... Even better than No 5 (except for the slow movement of No 5 which is totally sublime). Watched/listened to Zimmerman playing a Chopin Piano Concerto yesterday - out of this world beautiful playing.

      Indeed.
It’s almost the most difficult too.
Most sublime movement though for me in the set of Beethoven concertos goes to the A flat major movement in the first concerto.

Such amazing playing from everyone: the VPO and Zimerman. Lennie looks like he is having so much fun. These were among his last performances with this beloved orchestra of his. Interesting that the second horn is not using a Vienna horn, but the more common type of French Horn.
