I just started listening to these guys a couple years ago. Bought Frizzle Fry after hearing "Too Many Puppies" and listened to that album almost nonstop. interestingly enough, that was right about the time I hit a period of heavy insomnia and got next to no sleep for two months. Now every time I listen to anything from Frizzle Fry I get slightly anxious and nauseous. Weird.

Yeah, what year is this? Because I have a vivid memory of reading about Les in 1991, and they talked about his stage presence and the "stomp walk" in Rolling Stone. So this is before that then, you're saying?
When I first heard this song, it was my 16th birthday, the 3rd day of school, back from summer break, my senior year 1990, and I was tripping my balls off. My best friend had just come back from San Francisco to check out the San Francisco Art Institute where he'd be going to college. He brought back some LSD and the just released Primus album Frizzle Fry for my birthday present. We ditched classes almost all day just so we could go listen to this album, especially this song in his car over and over and over and over and... Also listened to the new Jane's Addiction Ritual de lo Habitual in another great friend's car (sadly she passed on soon after high school 😥) and never was the same again!!! No one really knew what this band looked like unless you were a die hard fan from the Bay Area, but in San Diego, they were unheard of, and like I mentioned, unseen. I pictured this little woodland creature band playing on wooden style instruments with an elderly Elvish dude on vocals. No idea the singer was also the bassist, which was a rarity back then. Next few days I scoured every record store around (The Wherehouse, Tower Records) I could to find their only other release, their live effort Suck On This! one thing I like about old les is that he always wore clothes that he could've just fished out a dumpster, while playing the most expensive bass in the world.
I always thought that this song kinda describes the whole band, it was the first song on their first album (not counting Suck on this) and it's called To defy the laws of tradition. Traditionally the guitar is the lead instrument and the bass is a rhythmic instrument, but because Primus defies tradition the bass is the lead while the guitar is the rhythm, idk if that was their intention or not but if it was it's pretty cool, or maybe i'm just overthinking this.

The amount of synergy coming from this video is spectacular
KZSU Stanford University. May 1989. They also played on our front lawn there.
I love that break at 2:56
He's wearing a grateful dead tank top, hell yea!

Aguante drummer Tim "Herb" Alexander!
@Primus
Keep The Beat Alive!!!!
Forget the videos these jam sessions are way better I love them just wigging out of bed and just want to jam
Such a PHENOMENAL BAND! I remember the first time I heard them and was blown away! I've always questioned though what music category do they fall under when I try to explain to people that have never heard them. I always say heavy funk but, just simply state they are Primus! Anyone who reads this comment, I would like to hear your thoughts about how you would describe Primus?
Larry's guitar playing is so over looked highly underrated and Tim herb Alexander need I say more...
Agreed much
2:40 even the guys in the mixing room are jammin hahaha
Esta banda es sorprendentemente buena... transmite ese feeling que prende... un estilo diferente a lo que he escuchado pero con toques llenos de buena energía ... un excelente legado que dejan sus proyectos musicales
what? theres no word in spanish for "feeling?"
@@chito2294 si existe, pero me acostumbré a usar ese término, cuando se habla de música, disculpe usted por ofenderle.
Freaken awesome--rock fusion the meant it was to be played, raw and rigglin'----good job, Primus of 1989!!!
That was amazing. I can't believe it took me 14 years to see this video
He’s sounds like Dana Carvey doing an impression of les with is weird
Stinky Tits: Thanks, I can't unhear that now!
God I remember listening to this album when it was brand new and me being like WTF? How?
What are the chances that Frank Zappa was Les Claypool's father? Such genius does not just happen, does it?
More like the Residents than Zappa
A lot of great comments about the overall quality of the musicians in Primus besides Les. What they do is so tight. And perfectly underscores and complements Les' bass genius with equal genius 🤟🏻😎
Only Primus can pull this off! So unique, a gift to the world of music :-)
