That’s a really good saying, I’m going to remember that. I’m a procrastinator, but I’ve started using this idea - if something should take less than 5 minutes, do it straight away. I get a lot more done nowadays.

Any and all moments you want to put on the screen will always be welcomed by your viewers. This video again shows your incredible ability at editing and that is where I am always amazed. I can’t imagine how complex that must be. But this video had a lot of wonderful glimpses of your life, not the least of which was your dog popping in for a cameo. Yessss, this little phrase and concept is so important, especially to serial procrastinators and perfectionists like me! I restore classic Japanese cars in my spare time, and I'm always chasing perfection. But sometimes (a lot of the time) what I actually need to do is get a car roadworthy and through an MOT so I can finish the importation procedure, or just take it for a drive and enjoy it for an afternoon instead of being stuck in the workshop. Your videos are such a breath of fresh air and even though you may not think they're perfect, they are to many of us! Also, the impromptu doggo appearances are adorable, we need more of those! 🥰
Thank you so much for this! It's honestly so easy to fall into that cycle. Haha she loves attention, I'm sure she wouldn't mind appearing more often ❤️
Just wanted to say I'm loving your videos, they feel wonderfully genuine and down to earth, but at the same time very polished and artfully done. This one really resonated with me, because I was such a perfectionist that when I finished my (very stressful) diploma in costume making I didn't make anything for a good few years because I didn't think they'd be good enough and so didn't want to try! Quite aside from being burnt out, I'd set too high a standard for myself. A decade on and I'm still self critical, of course, but I've learnt to be kinder to myself and more accepting of my work ("good enough for government work", as the phrase goes) as well as embracing imperfection, less goal orientated and enjoying the process. Anyway, sorry for rambling! Keep it up!
Loveee this comment. It's so true. Such an easy cycle to fall into.. Glad to hear you're being kinder to yourself! Thanks so much for sharing and for your kind words :)
@@CharlotteElizabeth3000 Aww you're most welcome! And thanks! There's definitely something to be said for longer form projects too, setting out to take your time :)
This is a perfect video about storytelling. The focus is on the telling of the story, not every small detail. i like this video, and enjoyed the storytelling. and the "flaws"? its not flaws, its a part of the story. The story about getting stuff done. Yes. absolutely, DONE is far better than perfect. Perfect does not exist.!!
I think it's a balance of what's really important and what is less so. Somethings have to be done right and others you can get away with or maybe wouldn't even be noticed. Prioritising what's important is key but yes, aiming for perfection usually hampers progress. Good enough is probably counter intuitively more successful.
It really does translate to other aspects of life. I have massive projects. I have spent so much time trying to make one part perfect. If I continue to operate like that, I will never complete the project. I have found that skill comes from repetition and if you lack the skill needed to make a part perfect you have to move on. So now I'm concentrating on finishing the project rather than making it perfect. In my case the drive (literally) is more important than getting an award at a show. My friend Mike at MKS says "Make it safe. Make it fun, but get it done." Looking forward to the next video.
Super wise words from your friend Mike! But yes it's so true, I too have unfinished projects, because I cared more about perfection. Thanks for this :) and enjoy your ride! (as I assume you meant a car.. 😅)
This has been something I've had to learn since becoming a software engineer. There will be plenty of opportunities to do something better later. Getting it done gives you the opportunity to learn from mistakes that you just never experience if you sit around contemplating if one of the possible ways is the "correct" way.
I was coming here to say the same thing. I'm a software engineer, and as you know there are multiple ways to skin a cat. If you follow the 'agile' methodology, you make incremental updates to the product. You don't develop the whole thing in one go. Ship the MVP (Minimum Viable Product) and add features along the way. The product may be 'done' for this iteration, but it's not perfect.
One of my favorite music projects is "First of October" that's a duo band that goes into the studio one day a year with nothing but their instruments and their creativity and writes and records a whole album. It's far from perfect, but the limitations means they are forced to make decisions and end up with more and better music than most people write in decades. This video was also more and better than most people ever make.
Thank you for doing this. I work in the creative field as an programmer. I learned a long time ago, you just need to get it done and while perfection is great, it can be hinderance in getting things done. The other problem with perfection, is overdoing it to the point it becomes worse. I learned this with drawing and cooking. You should do a video on overdoing it as a follow up to the this fine video.
Honestly, all my other videos are done over multiple days, so I know how you feel. But I wanted to challenge myself for this one! It was a good little lesson, but never again 😂
I spent probably 3 hours just looking through 30 minutes of footage, figuring out how to start edit.... And other channels just do a 15min "one take" almost no edit at all, it is.. .. .. Annoying to say the least. It's a struggle in of itself just to be done. And yeah, almost forgot, looking through the "done" video three times to check for errors 😅
The whole concept of done rather than perfect is in my eyes because if you aim for perfection each and every time, you will get less things done, in an average day at work, whether your low paid or high paid, you will have on average 10 things to do, if you make sure everything is perfect on the first thing, you may not get many things done, 10 good things is better than 1 perfect thing, thats the idea anyway, but in life we all know things can change in an instant lol. There are days were bad things happen 1 after the other, good video though, i like the whole music scene when explaining done rather than perfect 👌
Thanks for sharing this. I have a series of projects I've started and set to one side because I'm scared that I'll "ruin" my good work. But a finished project is always better than an unfinished project. You've encouraged me to think about getting back to some old projects and worry less about perfection ❤️
I have learned in this small time I have been making videos on RUclips, that instead of feeling embarrassed by your first videos or last video you made, instead of picking apart what you didn't like from it ( of course it is always good to learn and want to improve every day ) I rather take the good bits from it and bring it to the next video. I am editing my Albania road trip video, which I have been postponing for over a month now... why? I have no clue because now that I am in the '' zone '' I am enjoying doing it and remembering the amazing times that country gave me. I think you are right, it is okay to be different as long as you are yourself, people will like you for your jokes and charisma, and some others won't like you at all, but I guess it's better to go to bed knowing you are giving your all.
This was great. I know on that side of things this was probably "unfinished rubbish", but on this side it made the point stick. An "incomplete" video that was still a fun watch and a good message. Thanks for sharing!
Ahh thanks so much! Haha yes the fact it's not finished bugged me, but that was the point of the challenge so I had to let it go haha. The rest of the footage I got will just have to stay sat on a hardrive 😂
This is one of the hardest parts of my day job (and sometimes, writing comments ;-) ). In some cases perfectionism additionally has an unfairly skilled partner in crime called "but if I don't do it properly right now, nobody will ever find the motivation to go back and fix this part later". And of course there's a dog! 💜
Its s phrase i love, and that was a perfect film to explain it. Another is thinking about time vs quality vs money, in your video you made time The Thing. Trying to do stuff quick and cheap and aint a sin.
I write poetry, well not poetry, more like "musicless songs" because I don't have a band. Anyway, one time a friend told me to just post my writing, I told him I wanted to wait until "my style is refined and ready." But then one day I just wrote something, complete flow I didn't even think about it, I liked what I saw and posted it on Instagram, from then I created a little highlight of my lyrics and have been writing more often without thinking about making it perfect. This video captured that accurately. Also I wanna thank you for another video you did about small creators and posting what you wanna make rather than thinking about growing an audience, because that also helped me find the confidence to post my lyrics. Now I'm thinking of creating a website to put all my lyrics on one platform rather than just Instagram. This was too long I hope you read it. I wish you all the best.
Haha this wasn't too long at all, I enjoy reading! I like that term, 'musicless songs', such a lovely way to describe it. My Grandad was a Playwright. He wrote every day of his life. I'm telling you, keep on writing, because someday those words will mean so much to so many. I think a website is a great idea! Thank you for sharing :)

At least you did it honestly! I prefer content that doesn't try and make out everything is straight forward and easy. I came to the conclusion years ago that with car stuff most people just lie about the true costs and effort of a project/job to make themselves seem more impressive to others. As well as editing out the mistakes along the way...

Thank you for the smile 🫶 And I know the feeling of procrastination all too well. I have been diagnosed with ADHD(ADD) about 8 months ago and with the clarity of mind because of the medication I have fallen into a severe depression. I always had problems finishing things because I wanted to do, to do that, owww I forgot this and that and in the end.........nothing gets done. Even relationships didn't start because i wanted it to be........perfect. And now, at age 47, I am starting to learn how to start, work and finish things that I do. Not perfect, but they are getting done. And I still suffer from the depression and every day, every task and every lost thought of mind is a challenge....but hey.....you live your life with one completed task at a time. Maybe that is why I am so attracted to your video's Charlie, they resonate with who I am, that I am not alone, although we are different, I recognize a lot in you and your life. Thank you for that.
I really appreciate this comment. I love that you're starting to understand yourself and find processes that work for you! I can relate. You try to achieve perfection, can't then give up, because it must be perfect. .. And then you achieve 0. . I think about something 100 times before I actually attempt to do it. Self sabotage in a way. .. I've watched a lot of YT and they all started off with an I phone.. and progressed. .. Yes its not overnight success, its gradual. .. Just make what you can & just send it Charlotte. .. Even if it has a few flaws. You'll feel better.. and proceed on to the next task.. _Done is better than perfect_ Should be on a t shirt....😎 👍
Hi Charlotte. You're video found me. Yep I'm on the spectrum, and I teach, well, I give work experience to students who have autism or'need a little help'. And I'm trying to improve my life, my self worth etc. I've been making videos for about 3 years now, and I feel I'm still where you are now. In that loop of upload it even if it's not great. Yours was great. Mine, I just have to accept that I could redo it all again, but that's another 5 days gone. Anyhow, you are pretty cool. Thank you Jamie
You're doing good, don't beat yourself up about it. What's important, here, is that you do what you love. It makes you smile? Then that's perfect for you, and for us.
Regardless if you ran out of the time that set yourself, you still made progress and an amazing video, I am proud of you Charlie, keep you the good content.
More BMW wrenching ahead? The cool thing about your videos, are how your voice just feels familiar without beein. Perfect doesn`t excist, i always look back at what i have done in building, fabrication etc, taking with me things to do better next time. keep it up!
You're so sweet, thank you!! But yeah it can be difficult, it's so easy getting caught up in the finer details, making sure everything is perfect. So you're totally right, sometimes better to just upload and move on. Thank you and good luck with your channel :)
Just keep reminding yourself that you are a new independent YT creator that has to do all tasks yourself. It is entirely unreasonable to expect a BBC documentary level production in this circumstance. What I always tell myself in all things is that I strive for perfection but always fall well short of it. Nothing lies beyond achieving perfection so hopefully it never comes easy or too soon or what is there to strive for next time? Perfection can paralyze you and suck the joy out of what you do. Don't let it. Just have fun learning the process and don't be over critical about what you do today because tomorrow is a new day and a chance to improve a bit more. Steady progress will be very rewarding, just you wait and see.
hey its me again again "the twitch overwatch dude"😂 another amazing video keep doing what you do and take the time you need for it greetings from switzerland
I find myself doing this! I spend ages thinking about videos and shots and then get so overwhelmed and end up filming nothing! The other day I went out and filmed a video and then got home and edited it then scrapped it because I thought it was rubbish. Done is better than perfect, I should have posted and moved onto the next one. Thank you for inspiring me to make more
Great video. In most cases done is better than perfect. Especially since your definition of perfect may not and often does not align with any other’s. Does the message change if an edit isn’t perfect? Most likely no. The sun will come up tomorrow and you can try again! Keep the content coming, enjoying your videos. Your work on Bernie inspired me to work on Isabella. She went on her first drive in two years, two days ago. I bought her new shoes, gave her a much needed bath and your videos were a big reason behind that. Is she perfect, no where near. But she is on the road delivering happy miles! Cheers!
"Don't let perfect be the enemy of good" is the more common saying and one i fully endorse. Not a fan of this "get it done" variant as it doesn't truly convey the spirit behind the saying - it can be misconstrued as anything is better than nothing, ala just get 'er dun! Which in some cases may be true but definitely not all and more importantly encourages corner cutting, lack of care etc if the primary objective is to simply get something done. The spirit behind the common saying is that sometimes good is good enough, and delaying or waiting until it's perfect will inevitably lead to a worse outcome - ie far less output, late or missed deadlines, overthinking or self induced anxiety and stress etc which in turn will make obtaining said perfectism even more difficult. Now it's just a matter of putting this newly found wisdom into action and figuring out what level of good is acceptable 😊
There's a vibe in your video that i cant describe but really love ! Keep doing whatever you want, however you want, and the result will never be what you expected anyway ^^
This video was really interesting. I dont think ive ever seen someone visualise how long its taken to film a video, like this. (And yes by the way, there is a lot to be said for 'done is better than perfect' - though that isn't always easy to force oneself to accept!)
Oh snap, uve uploaded a video, well I guess ima have to watch lol sorry that I'm a day late my bad been busy lol 😅 I like this concept, very interesting way of making DONE videos
When I began to edit videos, I spent many many hours to edit and I became too much perfectionist, even I was focus on my mistake. Nowadays, I try to do thing on a good level, but not the perfect way, and I feel much more relaxed. And, suprinsingly, things were even better to before
And the outcome was excellent and delivered a great message about managing time and getting the job done. I’d say it was perfect. Now, how are those BMW wheel badges coming on?
@@CharlotteElizabeth3000 the correct centre caps for the E34 are available on eBay, new ones about £37 each. It’s a lot of money for 4 but will save you time to focus on making more super videos. Getting the job done, better & perfect. 😉
That was a cool video but I really need to know the dogs name now :) It's interesting how you see Done v Perfect etc. For me there is a "sweet spot" where "good job" lives. If I have a task and I have loads of time, doing it early means I just pick at it and dont really give it the attention or effort it deserves. The tasks just gets done in mediocre installments. If I leave things too late, then the task is either done really badly or not done at all. However, if I leave myself just enough time do thrash it out all in one go, I can then give the task my full attention and energy and thus.... usually do a pretty cool job of it. The trick is knowing where the sweet spot lies........ Side note..... I am a car guy. I watch car content and science stuff and geek things so I have no idea why your channel came into my orbit. Glad it did though, enjoying your videos a lot !! Keep going and do you !! .... but please let us know the name of your dog :) It will eat at me until I know.

Done is better than perfect… with the caveat… if not safety critical… 👌🏼… it seems to me that as RUclipsrs progress along the journey they become more adept at creating content faster… time is important .. though content is more valuable to viewers.. a dilemma Charlotte? … Keep the faith and don’t be discouraged … We’re here for you and your road less traveled ❌
Thank you for your kind words! :) honestly, I'm not usually too fussed about getting things done quickly (though of course that could change in the future) as I really do just enjoy the process, but also just wanted to set myself a little challenge, just to see if I could do it 😅
I feel this is a good mantra but you have to use it correctly. Personally I find aiming for perfection and knowing when it’s good enough is the way to go. I find if I don’t initially aim for perfection in the end it’ll just be crap
This is a really good way of looking at it. Aiming high but knowing when to chill. I'll try and keep this in my head for future projects! Thanks for sharing :)

Young, vivacious, exuberant - AUTISTIC - how are us boringly ordinary drones supposed to compete with that! But I was beginning to falter - messy, original, anarchic, quirky, clever & chaotic were hard to ignore, but of course (as you knew it would!) it was the old dog with the paper towel core that brought me undone, SUBSCRIBED!! :) PS love the old car!

Super advice...... I put two minutes up and it took five hours. I know I know...but I can't help it...I'll edit to the half second. But my videos aren't all that good so they need all the time they can get....
I'm a serial procrastinator with a long list of unfinished stuff. I had to work for a long time to get myself to just start things. But finishing them seems to be a whole different ball game. Usually because I'm not happy with the results. But I am sure, whatever you want to do, like if you wanted to make the best youtube video ever, you'd be better off making a video everyday for a year than spending a year making one video. Getting better with practise. Bob Dylan said he used to write 10 songs a day and throw 9 of them away. Now, I just need to convince my brain of this... Ps. On behalf of youtube: yes. On behalf of your school teachers: Charlotte needs to apply herself more with basic arithmetic. Pps. Say hi to your dog for me.
This is soooo true. Same here, lots of things started, and finished, never to see the light of day because I'm not happy with it haha. Thanks for this, lets convince our brains together 😂 Also, I was wondering if someone would comment on the math haha, and I will say hi to her for you, she loves people ❤️
@CharlotteElizabeth3000 We can try, but my brain is a real stubborn mf. Same as my lil pup, except she has 3000% more energy if you so much as look at her. She has absolutely no chill. What your dogs name?
No, no, no web-dev and SEO specialist, and a godforsaken perfectionist, but nothing is ever perfect. *Throws arms up, while dropping to my knees in the sand, queue Charlton Heston speech* Have fun researching :P (oh, his speech has nothing to do with me not reaching perfection, my director thought it might be good for the dramatic effect)
But it's so much easier to get hung up in the details and endlessly chase perfection :( The real funny thing is, and idk if you can relate to this too, but I've found the stuff that takes the least amount of time to do, or I guess the things you spend the least amount of time on, often come out being 10000000x better or easier or whatever than if you slaved over it for months and I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT Also arbitrary deadlines, like the 6 hrs you gave yourself for this, work great, it's often the only way I get any shit done at all
Omg thissssss. Yes I can totally relate. I made a video a few months ago, as a spur of the moment, because I couldn't film what I actually had planned. Everything you say in the video is completely valid and makes sense.. But I just can't get myself to do it🥲 I always need pressure and stress to get stuff done. Not even pressure from a deadline I set myself, but a fixed deadline by when it absolutely needs to happen or it will affect other people. And then I start as late as somehow possible, rush to get it done and somehow it does pretty well. It just would've been much easier, calmer and less stressful if I wouldve started even half a day earlier. And if it wouldn't affect other people, but only me, then I wouldn't get it done at all, probably not even start it.

I love your videos. Regardless of the length they are wicked to watch.

Sometimes imperfect is perfect .... like this video! 💙💙💙
Thank you!! :) ❤️
Ahh thanks so much for this!! I really appreciate it. I'm glad you enjoyed the chaos 😂❤️
Sometimes "good enough"........is enough!
HI PUPPY! Your hard work shows. Thank you for sharing.
I think it's a balance of what's really important and what is less so. Somethings have to be done right and others you can get away with or maybe wouldn't even be noticed. Prioritising what's important is key but yes, aiming for perfection usually hampers progress. Good enough is probably counter intuitively more successful.
Idk why but I just find your videos so soothing and relaxing. I really enjoy them 👍🏼
The end cracked me up.
Thumbs up even for the title of the video 👍✌
Ya done good Chuck. Ya done good. Your artistic/aesthetic vision is top notch.
You managed to word this better than I did in my entire video 😂 thank you!
Thank you for this. It helped inspire something I need to start doing with my own videos
I've not heard of this before! Such a good idea though. And thank you very much :)
You made my day just knowing there's such a thing as mini operation! Simple pleasures!
Haha, I was so happy to find one existed, had to use it in the video 😂
Super video...really enjoyed it. tHanks for posting
Making this video in only 6 hours is such an achievement! I get stuck in editing for days sometimes.
Honestly, all my other videos are done over multiple days, so I know how you feel. But I wanted to challenge myself for this one! It was a good little lesson, but never again 😂
@@CharlotteElizabeth3000 Maybe I should try it.
Another good video with some good words , it doesn't always need to be perfect 👌
Thanks for sharing this. I have a series of projects I've started and set to one side because I'm scared that I'll "ruin" my good work. But a finished project is always better than an unfinished project. You've encouraged me to think about getting back to some old projects and worry less about perfection ❤️
Ahh this is great to hear! Enjoy them :)
Thank you for this! So very true. Also, Albania sounds like a very cool road trip ❤️
This is brilliant! It's absolutely perfect as is. Thank you.
Ayy thank you!! :)
Very thought-provoking, thanks! Also really interesting to see your creative process. P.S. Your dog is an angel 🤗
Thank you! And yes she really is 🥹❤️

I prefer content that doesn't try and make out everything is straight forward and easy. I came to the conclusion years ago that with car stuff most people just lie about the true costs and effort of a project/job to make themselves seem more impressive to others. As well as editing out the mistakes along the way...
Haha I think if I edited out all my mistakes, I wouldn't have a video to put out 😂 thank you for this.
I really like the concept of this video. Very well done and put together for the time frame too. You have a very creative mind. 😊

As a small youtuber myself. I know how you fell. Sometimes you need to just let go, and upload. Im happy for your growth. I WANT TO SEE YOU SUCCEED !
You're so sweet, thank you!! But yeah it can be difficult, it's so easy getting caught up in the finer details, making sure everything is perfect. So you're totally right, sometimes better to just upload and move on. Thank you and good luck with your channel :)
Yay! New favourite channel! 🙂
'Perfection can paralyse you' - love this! So, so true. Thank you for this ❤️

Thank you for inspiring me to make more
I've been there many times!! So lovely to hear you're feeling inspired though ❤️
Cheers!
That's awesome to hear!! Always a good feeling when they run after sitting for so long. Enjoy those miles! And thank you for your kind words :)
Thank you so much :)
This video was really interesting. I dont think ive ever seen someone visualise how long its taken to film a video, like this.
(And yes by the way, there is a lot to be said for 'done is better than perfect' - though that isn't always easy to force oneself to accept!)
Thank you for this! But you're totally right, it's not easy to accept sometimes, hence this video idea 😅

Getting the job done, better & perfect. 😉
That was a cool video but I really need to know the dogs name now :)
It's interesting how you see Done v Perfect etc.

‘Done is better than perfect’ - It’s a point of view… 🤔
Everything you say in the video is completely valid and makes sense.. But I just can't get myself to do it🥲 I always need pressure and stress to get stuff done. Not even pressure from a deadline I set myself, but a fixed deadline by when it absolutely needs to happen or it will affect other people. And then I start as late as somehow possible, rush to get it done and somehow it does pretty well. It just would've been much easier, calmer and less stressful if I wouldve started even half a day earlier. And if it wouldn't affect other people, but only me, then I wouldn't get it done at all, probably not even start it.
I actually relate to this more than you think. I would have really struggled to make myself do this video, especially to a deadline, if I hadn't have already posted about it on the community tab 😅 posting there that I was filming, held me accountable 😂
@@CharlotteElizabeth3000 I would probably just quietly delete the community post, hope that nobody saw it then not do the video😂 and only start doing it if someone asks if the video is still coming 😂😂
