"Very fun to watch...an energy powerhouse...showmanship plus technicality PLUS audio and video quality." BINGO! You want...what I want. Nothing worse than watching (and listening to) what is OBVIOUSLY a great player putting on a great performance...and the production SUCKS! This video works because the dude is a MONSTER player...AND...those of us who can appreciate that he IS a monster player don't have to get pissssssed off cause of garbage sound and video. The lesson being...make the effort and reap the rewards!
"don't have to get pissssssed off cause of garbage sound and video." you should watch some of my Filipino reaction videos to cell phone recordings from 2008 :)))))
The drummer's name is Hibiki his main band is Matenrou Opera. In this video he is playing for one of his side projects Hazuki which is the solo project for the singer of Lynch. He also has other session work and side projects and can be heard on some Chaos Control songs along with Lovebites' former bassist Miho. There are some more female Japanese drummers with RUclips channels who have good drum video set up for covers and play throughs of their bands songs Tohko from Saisega and Mari from Mary's Blood.
There's something that's rubbing me the wrong way a little bit about Hibiki's drumming. He's incredibly skilled, plays with clinical precision, absolutely knows what he's doing, but too often that's exactly the problem. It often sounds "clinically dead" as well. I spent some time browsing his channel, checked out some covers and some live cams with 摩天楼オペラ, and that really jumped at me. I mean, if you compare his version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" with Dave Grohl playing it, for example. Hibiki's feels clinically deadmixed and played without emotion. Depending on what type of music he's accompanying, that can be a problem. (Or not much of it, but I'd never call it an asset) Also... can't shake the feeling he's a rad drummer but doesn't have the best feeling for music. Couldn't get rid of the un-good feeling of him playing somehow parallel to the rest of the band but somehow the drumming didn't feel like a perfect match? Difficult to describe. Just felt like the drumming didn't fully serve the song and more his ego at times 🤷♀️ I really hate having to think about his drumming like that. It's not even a massively huge flaw or anything. Just one of those tiny impurities you can't stop noticing once you started seeing them... Know what I mean? But then again, I'm autistic, I probably just obsess over the tiniest, most unimportant things way too much. 🤷♀️😂
the way that the drums are compressed (audio engineering-wise) and the way he played for this genre of music, he does seem to be lacking a tiny bit of dynamics in his strokes across the kit, so yes even though he is fun through his facial emotions and stick tricks, I do see your point :)
@DrumRoast So I'm not imagining things there? Good to know. I've never done anything even remotely related to audio engineering but his audio does feel like... uh, the drumming audio version of the kind of living room that looks like it's from a furniture brochure and kept so meticulously clean that no one's allowed to use it. 😂 Which is an odd thing to do for drumming if you ask me, because the magic of drumming comes from all of the "noise trash". That's the whole point of it! I mean, drumming is LITERALLY banging on shit to create noise. What's the point of denoising it as much as humanly possible? That's like drinking entirely alcohol free alcohol. Just tastes like shit, what's the point. 🤷♀️🤣 Kinda made me think about the drummer meme I saw recently. It was about "the pain of being a drummer and having to explain X". One of which was trying to convince people that Chinas don't sound like shit. Just thought: but... But... They DO sound like shit! They're supposed to sound like shit! It's the whole point of them! The art lies in knowing how to use them that they turn into FUN shit! 😂 EDIT: and yeah... I keep obsessing over micro dynamics but most people mistake that for me advertising "lack of control". No no, that's not lack of control. It's ultimate control. First step: get your control to robotic levels, second step: learn to use that control to ride micro dynamics into people's hearts and play with their emotions. That probably sounds really stupid now, but I've spent some time comparing Hibiki's cymbal work with Tatsuya's and I couldn't shake the feeling that Tatsuya... is making love to them. Stupid expression for "hitting metal with a wooden stick", but his cymbal work just feels so much more emotional.
