Heh :D I know, right? And not just story-wise, your character's strength scaling exponentially across the trilogy was beautifully done - being a weakling in BG1 was stille fun and being a demigod in ToB felt extremely overpowered without breaking the game mechanics. I don't think I've ever played a game that executed that so well.
I don't know if I'd say it was executed that well in ToB. ToB has the classic problem of literal generic town guards casting Time Stop and Meteor Swarm at you.
Agree with everyone else on the voice acting, years after playing this i can still recall whole dialogues from scratch, even cameo characters' voice acting was exceptional and highly memorable. What a masterpiece. In this scene, those mages are stupid, they should wait till Irenicus begins casting then leave the room and re-enter, repeat till he runs out (hehe), the lich in the inn trick....
I love how dumb the one mage is with his spell choice. "Wuh oh, this immensely powerful mage is about to magic me to death, I'd better not waste any time and cast... Protection from Magic Weapons!" [proceeds to get held, frozen, petrified, exploded]
Seriously, this happens with Irenicus in cutscenes a lot. He fights mages and they cast stuff that boosts AC or increases defenses against weapons, then they proceed to get blown apart into bloody chunks.
@@ArvelDreth Bro those mages took one look at how ripped this dude was.. and were like.. Oh right he's not a mage he's some kind of warrior.. Then realize.. oh shit he's a mage
I like how Jon Irenicus is such a powerful individual that he just walks around doing as he pleases, and only the child of the god of murder can bring him down.
I literally fall in love with this game again every single MONTH. I played it probably 6 times, including one time with only one character, a mage, and I've beaten the game AND the expansion with it. It took me probably 100 tries to kill Melissan (in the expansion)
I just started on this game 2 weeks ago after seeing the amazing critic scores and user comments, and I am very very addicted to it. 9 hours straight. I've played Dragon Age: Origins but its been uninstalled after a few hours to it. I really hate the atmosphere of it. BGII however, has a really passionate atmosphere. Everywhere is different, and made to the finest details. Examples would be the Unseeing Eye quest, and the crypts. The gameplay is full of action and requires some tactics CHARLIMIT
Totally agree. It never ceases to amaze me that the greatest games of all time remain the ones created years ago. BG2 will always be my favourite RPG. Oh, and the voice acting of all the characters is just brilliant :) Jonelith in particular.
Jon Irenicus is the best drawn antagonist of all time. He is evil, but his feelings are well supported by his losses. David Warner is genious, keep in mind that he also voiced Morpheus in Fallout 1!
Oh jeez. XDDD Irenicus is my favorite villain of all time. He's just so damn awesome >D Thank you so much for uploading this. Now I want to play BG2: SOA again. o.o; For...about the three hundredth time. ._. I'm a huge nerd.
@Banminator More like they don't train voice actors like this anymore. David Warner is one of very few voice talents that make anything they touch pure gold. He's cut from the same cloth as the likes of Tim Curry, Malcolm McDowell, Keith David, and the late Tony Jay (may he rest in peace).
Black Isle took a great risk with IWD2 as it came out a bit after NWN 1 . Not that I'm complaining as I loved IWD2 and seeing the good old graphics we grew to love in BG2; the only reason I considered it risky was the damn reviewers that always want the latest graphics...... Thankfully it was well recieved :D R.I.P Black Isle; when they went Icewind Dale went too :( At least the same guys that developed Baldurs Gate (Bioware) are still alive and kicking :)
Well you'll notice 2 screens Black Isle & Bioware. Also Bioware is not bioware its EA Games now. Black Isle sort of exists within Obsidian Entertainment now. Black Isle published the BG series having developed several great DnD games they knew when it was ready and what made a quality CRPG. Whereas EA is now in that role and demands it too fast, full of capitalist bullshit like microtransactions and live service bs..
In fairness, some versions of Mantle provide spell resistance, and Sellwood is supposed to shut down nonsanctioned spells, so he may have assumed Irencus got his hands on a blade of some sort and was making his escape that way. That being said, even the versions of Mantle that provide spell resistance generally won't stop higher powered spells. And they certainly wouldn't stop a man powerful enough to sling spell fire like Irencus can. The only smart spell to cast in that situation is Teleport. I.E. "Run away, tell everyone what is happening, come back here with a small army alongside me."
I honestly wouldn't have cared if these graphics were still used because the environments in this still rival or even surpass todays 3D rpgs and they were well structured :) Though sadly things have to go in the 3D direction in the end because of what reviewers expect. Though I must say Neverwinter Nights was very good especially for the 1st of Biowares first 3D games based on Dungeons and Dragons but some areas were quite bland looking and repetive especially caves :)
wuut! i miss that spell animations! Those are from icewind dale! How can you do that(i'm sorry there isn't icewind dale's spell sounds as well)??

@kestorz You seen (played demo of) Dragon Age 2? 1 Race, 3 Classes, Action RPG Style? And yet they dare talk about Baldur's Gate in connection with this Mass Effect 2 Recolor? So much for a "spiritual successor". -_-
Damsel in distress? Saving Imoen is actually minor part of the story. Not to mention, SoA is much more about atmosphere and characters with their personal stories. This approach is much more better than the "magnificent epic poetry with 9000 twists" without any interesting characters, in fact anything interesting at all - like blizzard games. The case of DA is even worse - boring fantasy cliché with the story I've already seen at least thousand times.
@pykacz Thank you for replyingly politely to me, and I'm sorry for my attitude. RUclips is populated by so many jerks that I unfortunately tend to be hostile out of anticipation whenever I disagree with someone. It's rare to find someone civil. Listening to your video again, the Polish actor does sound very menacing. It's honestly probably exactly the reverse of what I said―I probably just think Warner sounds better because I speak English.
Though dragon age was a really good attempt for getting the old gold back ( the succes of baldurs gate) , it was still not good enough to beat the old Baldurs gate . Graphics are not everything. dont know why but baldurs gate is still the best of all RPG i know
@DKnight2066 Have to agree , though dragon age was a really good attempt , it was still not good enough to beat the old Baldurs gate . Graphics are not everything
Not that the "Damsel in distress" (SoA) or "Being the chosen one saving the world" (ToB) was any stronger, mind you. But the execution was excellent, DA is just outright boring. The best (and most resembling of BG) parts were in my opinion in the Fade - it allowed the creators to unleash their imagination.
It's a good game, I agree, and was as addictive as crack - but compared to BG, the Dragon Age world seemed a bit disjointed. The DA environment felt more like levels tacked onto the story - it didn't live, it didn't breathe. The best analogy I can think of is if you used Haer'Dalis' prison level as a template for 75% of your game, you get Dragon Age. (And I hated the level with all the stupid sink holes.)
@Grendelynden I don't doubt it. Actually I think he's really great, just saying that I prefer Polish version :) Maybe because I got used to it since I heard it many times.
And just what the hell does Dragon Age have to do with the Baldur's Gate series? Elves and dwarves having gay sex cutscenes isn't one of them. Stop it.
I love how that one guy deadass cast protection from magical weapons against Irenicus, prisoner for unlawful use of magic, unarmed, currently in the process of using the power of jazz hands to turn mages into confetti.

So how did Bioware go from this, to prepubescent cliche "humour" in Anthem? Oh how the mighty have fallen.
