  • Today on Weird History Food, we dive deep into the feasting and pageantry of the one and only 'Medieval Times' dinner theater! The Chivalrous History Of Medieval Times spans all the way back to an event held in the 1770s, which at that time harkened back to the glorious Medieval times of England... Over time, new American interest in European medieval games took hold, eventually spawning what we now know as Medieval Times Restaurant. Maybe you've been? Maybe you've always wanted to go? Whatever the case, come take a trip in time with us and see how this way of knight life came to be.

for a "fun" suggestion: my husband and i discovered a dinner theater called "the hatfield and mccoy dinner feud" travelling through sieverville Tennessee if yall wanna look into that insane mess. we couldnt believe it existed and it had a tagline of "hillbilly hijinks" -- honestly wild considering that whole real life situation ended in a literal massacre and people died (including children)

I was in the Navy back in the early '80s. I think it was 1983 when my ship pulled into Mallorca (Spring or early Summer), for a much-needed Liberty Port. There was a dinner theatre thing we could buy tickets for on the ship-- and I think it was this place. The grand entrance had us greeted by various court nobles, etc. before herding us to our section of seats-- which were divided up into four areas: Blue, Red, Green and Yellow (I think...???) The point was to cheer for your color knight during the jousting and ground battles. The loudest section's knight won the battle. The "serving wenches" were all young and pretty (much appreciated by young sailors out on Liberty!). The food was good enough, but not fancy-- just tossed on your serving bowl as the girls walked past (roast chicken, baked potatoes... maybe a vegie of some sort). The mead cups were filled with wine twice. No reordering! We all screamed and hollered as loud as only sailors can, and our knight won handily every time! After, the jousting arena became a disco with a cash bar and decently loud but unremarkable music. Booze prices were inflated, so we didn't stay long. But what a great time that was! Overall, our stop on Mallorca was one of the best Liberty Ports we saw-- LOTS of other fun stuff to do, there!

I wish I could've seen that version of the show. Sadly, I've only seen a video of the modern version, and a sample show at WonderCon - 3 knights battled it out on stage and the winner got to choose a bride from the audience. He chose a lady cosplaying as Black Cat (Marvel's version of Catwoman).

I held my birthday party in the Lyndhurst New Jersey Castle some years ago. The men posed with The Queen for a picture, and the women posed with the King.
We were in the second row of the Black and White section. I thought that the people in the first row of the section had a better view, BUT I was wrong. They had to strain their necks to see while my group had PERFECT seats and a PERFECT view.
My best friend and her then boyfriend (now husband) presented me with a Knighting Ceremony. I was the only adult there, BUT I was touched by their gesture.
The Earl Marshall knighted me. "Dame Judi" and announced that it was my birthday.
During the tournament, The King also announced that it was my birthday and wished, "Dame Judi and her group, welcome to the kingdom."
Our Knight won, and after my guest and I posed for pictures with the knights and danced.
It is a shame about the tax evasion and union busting.
I will remember that January day for as long as I can remember.

To be fair, spending half a mil in today’s money on an event is a pretty good deal. It’d be closer to 2 mil if it had been at like a Dave and busters with how things are going now. Gotta love thriving capitalism 😅
