  • Thanks to ‪@NumskullDesigns‬ for passing their Galaxian Quarter Arcade my way to take a look at and review. This is a fully playable model replica of the original 1979 arcade machine. Attention to detail is very important on a product like this. Let's take a look!

    Galaxian is my all time favourite retro game and I spent a ton of my pocket money on the arcade machine back on the day. The sound effects give me the chills as they are the soundtrack to my youth and transport me to the 80's. I've been holding back on pulling the trigger on this for a while but I think seeing you wax lyrical and passionate about something that is dear to my heart has pushed me to invest! 😁👍🏻

    I was just about to comment that I wish arcade 1up would make their cabinets look correct like these ones do, and you ranted about it anyway :) This is why I'm subbed

      Haha, yeah it’s a subtle thing that matters to some of the old guys of that generation. I know a lot of people don’t care, and I get that it’s a nuance. It just bugs me each time I see that generic cut. It just seems like the easiest/cheapest route.

    Coincidentally, I just picked up one of their Galaga machines for pretty much the same reason. My Dad managed an arcade that his cousin and a few partners opened up in the 80’s. He was never a big fan of video games, but when he noticed how busy the Galaga machine always was, he decided to give it a try, and he was hooked. He eventually got into Ms. Pac-Man as well. My Dad passed away a little under two years ago. I’m hoping to finish up my gaming room this coming year, and when I do, I’ll be sure to have this placed somewhere prominently in the room.

      Sorry to hear about your loss. That’s a nice story though and cool that you have that memory. I think it’s probably common for a parent to pass on their likes and interests to a child, but the reverse seems to be a bit less common. I don’t know that I ever thought we’d see products like this, but I’m glad they exist. Best wishes to you, I hope you get that model up on the shelf.

      @@ScarletSprites Thanks. I made sure that he kept his Galaga habit over the years - I had MAME set up with just Galaga and Ms. Pac-Man on his PC (those are all he ever cared about anyway). I even had a custom Arcade stick made with Galaga's control panel artwork on the top, which I gave him as a Father's Day gift. I recently sent that to my younger brother who wanted it as a keepsake, hence I got the mini-cab to remember him by. 😊

    My friends and I were huge Space Invaders fans in High School. And then Galaxian came out and we were completely blown away! The sounds! The colors! And everything blew up real good! I still love playing the game today. Galaxian will always be a special game for me. I'd love to have a full size cab, along with the Asteroids and Space Invaders we used to play at the Bowlerama.

      Those early cabinets really were great. The artwork always had to help sell what was happening on screen in those days. Looking back on it now is equally as fun as playing the games most days.

    At least someone agrees with me that the cabinet shell design to the original is important. I got blasted on one video where I said I wasn’t buying the MK2 from 1up because of its non authentic design. Good review.

      @@ScarletSprites One of the things I like about the Pac-Man 40th is it saves high scores, which some of the other Numbskull cabs don't. The Track & Field looks quite nice. I was looking at that as well. Since I don't have space for either regular arcade cabinets or even Arcade 1-Ups (which I don't really like in all honesty), these definitely do the trick. I just ordered a Dragon's Lair minicab from New Wave Toys. I'm looking forward to getting that.

    I really like the story about your dad and why you have the connection to the game. It's interesting looking back at the era of video game arcades and how some of the ROMs can't capture the same magic without the cabinet. I just received the Dragon's Lair from Replicade, and seeing the angled cabinet top and electronic scoring makes me remember why I kept asking my dad for two quarters to play 🪙🪙

    I REALLY love the cabinets from the original Galaxian and Pac-Man, and also the more rounded (and perhaps more ergonomic) Galaga and Mr. Pac-Man cabinets. It's hard to beat combination of artwork, colors and design of the Galaxian cabinet. I also have a weak spot for physical design of Irem's Jungle King, Elevator Action etc. series of cabinets, even though they had kinda generic side art.

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 года назад

      I love the Elevator Action cabinet. The colors always reminded me of Indiana Jones. Great cut and shape!

      @@ScarletSprites It's a shame that arcade games, except for racing games and games requiring custom or specific controller setup, stopped getting dedicated cabs in the late 80's as JAMMA took over that segment. At least here in Norway we mostly had Danish generic black JAMMA cabinets with terrible controllers. It was still exciting to take the bike around town to check the usual malls and stores if the lone cab on the floor had been replaced with something new. Reading about the games in computer magazines also helped building up the excitement. Nowadays it's not easy to get original cabs over here, and i also don't currently have much the free space. I still have the good memories :)

    While these are really cool love letters to some classic arcades some people are nostalgic for... I think you summed it up best by saying "This isn't going to be your preferred way to play Galaxian". Now... this isn't a reason not to get one... just like getting a replica of Han Solo's blaster isn't a bad idea just because it doesn't shoot real laser beams. Honestly, if it wasn't the age of Covid and I can't see myself going back to work before Spring of next year... I gotta be honest... that Dragons Lair mini-cab MadLittlePixel just reviewed is really tempting, especially at only $120. The level of detail on that really shows you the love they put into it. I'd really dig having that thing sitting on my desk at work just as a conversation starter... or what I would refer to as a "Nerd flag".

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 года назад

      Yeah that Dragon’s Lair unit has really been popular the past few days. I always think of that game as a moment, it’s not necessarily a good game, but it is for sure a moment and one that you remember seeing. Truly a captivating machine and a “moment” in gaming history. I bet even having the mini replica running on attract mode would fulfill 90% of the charm alone.

  • @Getoffmylawn_Gaming

    While I dont disagree with your desire to have arcade1up replicate authentic cab designs there are a few roadblocks that you arent taking into account. First is that those are not made to order. They are mass produced and with each cab averaging 4 titles per, quadrupling their sku assortment would be a logistical and warehousing nighmare. They tried this with Burgertime. Theyve barely sold 3k units if that by now. The original concept for that cab had Karate Champ art and the standard cab shape iirc and most complained after the fact they didnt keep to that TO the original form.
    Lastly most in A1ups demographics dont have the square footage to put these 2X2 in boxes and instead most line them up along walls, using their favorite cabs as the end pieces. This renders cab shapes meaningless and relies on marquees as the separator.
    Sunmarize it this way. You buy arcade1ups for the nostagic experience rather than 100% replication.
    Nice review on the numbskull SS

    • @ScarletSprites
      @ScarletSprites  3 года назад

    I have all of their cabinets, and love them all, the company is just super unreliable and uncommunicative to product dates. That’s unfortunate. I’m personally pretty much done with the whole preordering thing from anywhere. If it’s on a shelf or stocked online I’ll pick it up.
