  • Hey! Thanks for waiting a while for me to get a new video out - turns out it's hard to work on these videos while I'm in class. But lichens are one of my favorite "organisms," and it makes me so happy to teach others about them. If you have any questions, please leave a comment and maybe I'll make a video about it!

    I'm fond of that pale green lichen with the bright red fruiting bodies. I always found it growing on logs near the dune pines, by the Ft. Tilden beach, in NY. Good show.

      @@microcosmia hello! Thanks for the video!
      I have a question i can't find the answer to anywhere 😕
      Do you know how long lichen can stay dormant for?
      What is the longest one has been dried out then reawakened?
      In my search online i found that moss under a glacier woke up after over a century but nothing about lichen :(

    I have a question
    Please give me its answer ,the question is that in lichens both algae and fungus are present, but in asexual reproduction just fungus is involved but algae is not ? And also in sexual reproduction ??

    • @microcosmia
      @microcosmia  5 лет назад

      In sexual reproduction, only the fungus reproduces, then in order to make a new lichen individual it must find the suitable photobiont. In asexual reproduction, the fungus and algae often stick together.

    • @bobs5596

      from my experience, lichen cannot take the constant humidity enclosed in terrariums. they require cool airy conditions with high light. i would try hanging a lichen growing on a stick(easy to find, like the one shown in the beginning of this vid) from a string in a north east window. observe the condition and orientation to light before you collect the lichen for better understanding of it's requirements. lichens dry out completely and go dormant between waterings. i would spray the lichen with a rain water mister several times a week. keep in a cool/ cold /chilly room in winter. open the window in summer for ventilation. it is easier to grow your lichen outdoors year round just outside your viewing window and let nature take care of it.

    i have a question, if i collected a lichen, and would like to place it on a rock i have, how could i coltivate it there?, should i wet it and crush it with water and place the paste on the rock?

    Great video. I photograph lichen in northwestern Wyoming. I’ve become fascinated with the colors and amazing details. This a very arid ecosystem that is roughly a mile in elevation. These organisms are incredible. I’m just a useful idiot trying to gain any knowledge that I can cram into my monkey brain, so thanks for the information! I’ll check out your other content.

    Could we get you to use a microphone on camera so it doesn't sound like a muffled, echoing can?
    I like moss and lichen. I blended a lot up with sour milk last year and painted that on concrete and wood. It smelled awful for quite a while but now there is some growing on the concrete and wood.

    • @microcosmia
      @microcosmia  6 лет назад

      That's cool that you were able to cultivate them - usually that can be a challenge because of their specific needs.
      I'd love to increase the quality of my videos, but unfortunately for now this is just a hobby that I do whenever I get the time so I don't have the means to invest in it.

      I don't have a Goodreads account! Surprisingly, I don't actually read that many nature-related books - I absorb most of my knowledge through classes and online identification/appreciation groups. I do of course have to recommend Robin Wall Kimmerer if you haven't checked her books out yet.
