The production comparison to the Viper and it relatively low production levels misses the point that the Viper has (I'd guess) 8 or 10 time more parts to assemble than the Aperta, and considering many Viper pieces, being larger and heavier, would require at least 2 workers each to position those parts - the same number of workers could easily produce 4 to 5 times the Apteras in the same time. Hell - Viper's Big V10 power alone probably weighs more and has many more parts than the entire Aptera.

They're expecting a slow roll out next year, ramping to 10,000 units, then up to 40,000 units per year by 2025. I think your estimate are too low. They'll be also be getting an additional $50 million in investor funds, going public probably with a 5 billion valuation shortly after, and getting government assistance.

u kno hammer I did those estimates with the very first funding they had - way back - they just had the we funder - private 1k investments and some money from their money guy - this was at the beginning of Aptera.2 - so ya out of date now I agree - from following these ev companies; 1. don't count on the government loan 2. A soon as you feel you have enough funding - you need another 500 million - 3. It takes 2x what you estimate to get things done - I do think Aptera has a good chance of success - I think even more so internationally - and they have the battery co behind them - the lithium mine - and the deep pocket partner - design and execution is the key - thanx for the comment hammer

They just want to deliver 1 car by December. Their head engine has said like 10 cars next January, up to maybe 100 in February, and scale up from there. The additional capital from the limited production can keep them afloat before their IPO which is when things will really take off.

@@mxux Demming's face is on Japanese currency. I had the honour and privilege of meeting Demming when the factory I once worked for had him come over for an analysis. I got to read it. It was spot on! And I'm sure he was paid heftily for it.
Instead, the top brass buried his analysis, sold the business two years later and one year after that they announced the plant was closing!
Shows to go that nobody is a prophet in their own land. The guy was a genius, but politics got in the way here and the higher ups were only concerned about their golden parachutes. Demming had much more honour than the people who commissioned him for his work. He was very elderly when I met him and walked with a slight hunch, but he found no problem with walking around the plant and asked me very intelligent questions which also dealt with the culture of the plant, not just the technical stuff. For him culture was just as important as logistics and production and work flow and everything else.
Upon his departure I only wish he had been the person in charge. As a senior technician I felt that perhaps I had learned more from Demming than those who had hired him to analyze our plant. So, that's how I learned about Demming. Up front and personal. The first time he walked into my testing lab, I didn't even know who he was. I sincerely thought that he was there to check the calibration stickers on my test equipment to make sure they were not expired. Which was probably a very good thing for him because we spoke very freely and I was not awe struck. lol Hardly anybody there knew who he was and he did not wish to walk in with an entourage surrounding him as it would have defeated his purpose. He was a genius!

But given that my reservation number is 16105 and at the production rate that you mentioned, will I even see my Aptera before 2023? I know to discount the first 1 on my reservation number, so that likely makes me: number 6,105 on the list. So, if 1,500 unites in their first 12 months of production and say that their production begins in June, that would mean that by next June there would still be 4,605 vehicles ahead of me. Even if Aptera were to double its production capacity after the 1st year I would not see an Aptera on my driveway until 2023. Sorry, getting antsy over here. So one of the things they made clear in that interview is the Aptera is very few pieces/moduals to assemble. Assembly plants do not have to be purpose built and could be put into virtually any small manufacturing/warehouse type facility, allowing for localized production. If they start an assembly plant on the west coast and demand becomes high on the east coast not hard or expensive at all to find a small place to start a new line near demand.

    • @mxux

@@mxux maybe but I believe what was stated is they are working with Sandy Monroe to set up stable supply chain. Large pieces/moduals would then be distributed to assembly plants. So prior to assembly a lot of cars can ship in few containers thereby reducing shipping cost. Much cheaper than shipping assembled cars. I forgot assembly plant footprint. I believe less than ten thousand square feet but not sure on that. Anyway some rediculously small cheap footprint.

This is my concern as well. As a pre order customer they seem a bit off focus; in fact i really don't care to see them waste an hour on more hype or interviews; I want to see 100% focus on producing the existing design. I don't care about it being perfect; nothing is perfect. Make the damn vehicles and satisfy the existing customers. When I see that sort of focus on production; I'll at least believe they are totally committed to making something rather than promoting something. I want them to succeed and nothing breeds success like getting it done and making the customer happy. When I hear them talking about making reviewers of car magazines happy rather than customers they already have; it doesn't seem they know how to produce; they know how to promote. They've done more than enough promotion; they need production or they will never gain the credibility they need to get more customers. Focus on Production. If they do that ; success will be inevitable.

The only way to make this project work is by realizing that it never is going to be a very very big business. If keeping expectations low, grearing production to a kind of custom production, holding the price as low as possible - a perhaps slightly larger than mom's-and-pop's business might make it nicely. Make it a specialty business. People want a cheap go-shopping, or go-to-work vehicle that's better than a motorbike, but not a money hungry car.
The way it is now, it seems like a scam where investors never get a finished product.

Well I think they will produce a product - the industry and materials have caught up to the idea - the self charging is a game changer in the right climate - charging is a problem for people who don't own a home - and many households too - I think there is a niche for it - especially as it does not compete directly with TESLA - providing they lower/keep cost down which is possible with mass production - like the new VW Bug in the USA - in regions of CHINA/Asia that will support self charging - seems to me to be a large market as well - the not a motorbike you describe would be the Archimoto IMO - Aptera I would consider a car - would take it on the freeeway in the rain...thanx for the comment g

Great Concept!! Although this would make a great city car, until cars and trucks get smaller, it's not a highway car.

Steve thanx for the comment - well there are a lot of big vehicles out there - but the safety built into the design of the Aptera is impressive - and that was version 1 - the new Aptera is even better I am sure - it is capable of handling any road and was initially meant to be a commuter car exclusively - with the work from home movement who knows if that segment is still viable? I think the results of crash testing will prove the vehicle to be safe - the capsule design is similar to a F1 car - I would feel comfortable on the highway in it as it stands now - you know you have to drive something enormous to be above the crowd on a California interstate - I don't think most people do that - most are in smaller vehicles IMO - thanx for the comment - and Aptera is a perfect urban vehicle imo.

You do make an excellent point that cars and trucks are a danger to other forms of transportation. That's putting the onus on them rather than on lighter forms of transportation. You are reframing the argument from "Apteras and other small vehicles shouldn't be on the highway because larger vehicles are a danger to them" to "Large cars and trucks shouldn't be on the road because they are inherently dangerous to smaller vehicles."
As far as the role of the Apteria I actually see it reversed. With 88" wheel span in the front I think that the Aptera is going to have a tight squeeze in some city streets. In particular, I'm thinking of Portland where the streets are almost too narrow for my Honda Insight in certain neighborhoods. Which is one of the reason Portland dwellers rely so heavily on bikes for transportation. On the highway because of its aerodynamic design the Aptera will go (flow) long distances easily and efficiently. That's how I plan on using mine. Around town I'll ebike as I do already. For distances I'll drive my Aptera.

Aptera should use Arrival micro manufacturing by contracting Arrival to supply body of Aptera.
Arrival specialty is to produce composite automobile body by automation.

AN - IMO great - then feed those to FOXCONN in Lordstown Ohio and contract manufacture the whole thing - lordstown Motors will engineer the process...

Yes they will run out because they aren't making any vehicles or delivering them. If you count the original Aptera, then the new announced electric then the alpha and the beta - they are on their 4th redesign. Do they know how to design something that works? They seem to need to take some business lessons because you can't make money if you don't sell anything.

Well Jim the usual path is prototype - alpha - beta - pre production vehicle - certification - start of production and then ramp up production. As I understand it Aptera has ventured on a complete new design - basically reusing only the aerodynamics. I think - not sure here - they are in beta - and the changed the beta body to make it wider and deeper - more headroom - they seem to be making all the right moves IMO - and Sandy Munro is consulting on the design - at last view they were testing the stability of the beta which was very good. Since this is a clean sheet design I think they deserve the benefit of our confidence at this point. The cooling system they have pioneered is breathtaking - and all the subsystems and components developed here can be used on the planned four passenger vehicle. They seem to be following the general new model development time frame of about three to five years - I think Sandy Munro will design manufacturability into the Aptera and once in production numbers will skyrocket. Munro is also a investor/stakeholder and he really knows cars and developed the first GM EV back in the day. Better invest some time now than face short sellers or NHTSA in the future. I have confidence in the management team - IMO we have to trust their judgement at this point - it is a new vehicle concept that I feel will meet the charging challenges keeping many customers out of the EV market worldwide.
I value your opinion - thanx for the comment JV

@@mxux Maybe if you are Tesla and have a 1/2 trillion capitalization this company never had funds for that never will now that they've blown their budget. They needed to make vehicles; get some cash flow - they don't have money to try and perfect things if their initial design wasn't worth a damn they shouldn't have brought it out. I predict the company is out of business within a year.
