*I wish good luck to promoting the new report. I am relieved to be living in Spain where we do not have anti-Palestinian laws. Spain said last Friday that, in the name of Middle East peace, it had agreed with Ireland, Malta and Slovenia to take first steps toward recognizing statehood declared by the Palestinians in the Israeli-controlled West Bank and in the Gaza Strip. Last year Spanish President Pedro Sánchez outraged Israel’s leadership by accusing the nation of failing to comply with international humanitarian law in its siege and bombardment of the Gaza Strip.*

When mentioning the early 20th century groups that birthed terrorism you failed to list the Haganah, the Lehi, and the Irgun. The latter of which bombed the King David Hotel in July of '46 killing 93 and injuring 45. Its important to denote that people who fight back against oppression (especially the kind that rises to the level of killing) are too often improperly labeled as terrorists.
Thank you so much Darryl Li. I wish you had a few video lectures online so scholars outside the U of C could learn from you and use your work to think.
Incredibly important work! Understanding these laws and their impact is the missing piece in some of the discussions and critiques of pro-Palestine activism in America. And the laws haven’t targeted only Palestinians and Arabs but really have been applied to Muslims in general and even “shariah law”
@@Fungoulright, but these legislators don’t even know what it is! They demonized their own version of it, like it’s a scary bogeyman taking over the country 🙄
Using a far-Right bombing (Oklahoma 1995) to pass "anti-terrorist" repressive legislation against liberation movements and their supporters (which Darryyl Li talks about) was done in Ireland in the 1970s when bomb massacres by British Loyalists (coordinated by British Intelligence operatives) was used to legalise non-jury courts and legislation to persecute Irish Republicans (Ammendment to Offences Against the State Act) which are used to this day (and which Sinn Fein no longer opposes).

It seems once you have labelled a person or organization as terrorist then you have already won a victory, you have delegitimized their actions and laid them open to the reomoval of their constitutional rights. I read the CCR report and it gives strategies for fighting against the designation of Palestinian sympathizers as terrorists. But it says nothing about challenging the designation as terrorists of those who are openly committed to armed resistance. Americans can openly support armed resistane, the principle is NOT criminalized, they support Ukraine's armed reistance to Russia openly and offer them vast "material support" And of course they give even greater "material support" to the state of Israel who use terror routinely against Palestinians even though the idea of labelling the IDF as a terrorist organization would not get the slightest traction in the US. So what are the strategies for changing the perception of Palestinian resistance, for making THEIR armed struggle as acceptable as that of the Ukrainians? If all the CCR is doing is advising groups how to avoid being associated with "terrorist" organisations then you have already conceded too much, you have conceded to the establishment's program of criminalizing Palestinian armed resistance. They have a RIGHT to fight back and the incomplete CCR strategy will take away the only thing that gives them hope and dignity. And what is more, the strategy makes them so much weaker because it is only when people see them taking up arms that they understand how desperate their situation actually and how much belief they have.
