  • Verbs can either be transitive or intransitive. Transitive verbs must have a direct object to complete the thought. Intransitive verbs do not have a direct object.

      Transitive verbs needs noun as the objects while intransitive verb needs preposition + noun eg in the room

    I think there is also an object in prepositional phrase: A prepositional phrase is a group of words consisting of a preposition, its object, and any words that modify the object.

      But to know if the verb has a direct object, you must the questions what or who eg Joe plays outdoors. Ask yourself ‘what does Joe play?’ No answer because no direct object and by its very title, the question you must ask is ´what ( thing/object) not ‘Where’.

    One correction which I found according to my book ' The branch fell to the ground ' has a transitive verb which is fell because there is a direct object in this sentence - THE BRANCH
