I too was looking for a way to do this and stumbled upon this video after discovering the camera app on chromeos did the trick. Here's something else I discovered. Change the camera app to video, then right click and select show controls. Now click the the speaker icon to unmute and there you go no bluetooth speaker needed for audio from the hdmi device. From the chromeos taskbar you can adjust the mic levels for the capture device to clean up the sound if needed.

I love my Acer chromebook 11 and 99% of my online usage is with this device. I have found the linux install works great, with Libreoffice, Kmymoney and Gimp. My only complaint is my low end model only has 16gb storage which is tight with the linux install. Instead of using a capture device, can you not operate the Raspberry Pi remotely from the chromebook? Seems simpler to me.

I have the HDMI input device and the Pi 400 connected to usb on a USB-C dock so everything is powered from from a single USB-C source. Trying to find an alternative to the camera app as it the overlays that stay on screen are distracting
Ok just found an app called Cam Recorder on the chrome store ( not play) this does the same job as the camera app pretty much but has less on screen overlays. Simple to select the usb input too. It runs in a chrome tab which means it also lets me cast the tab to one of my chromecasts... though it’s a little choppy.. Great channel, keep it up! :)
@@mcal27 Are you using the Lenovo IdeaPad Duet Chromebook? Because I am struggling a little with setting it up the way it was shown here, in the video. The support hotline told me, that the chromebook cannot receive HDMI input signal.
@@captainfabsy1000 then they are wrong. You need a small hdmi input adapter that connects via usb. Very cheap on Amazon etc. Then it’s just a matter of finding the app to view the hdmi input.

I bought a HDMI capture after watching your M1 vid it works just don't like using a different keyboard and mouse . Have you done a vid using your PI 400 with your iPad . Good vid you give a easy explanation on how you experiment with the PI
well you could use something like Barrier(linux,windows,ios) or another virtual KVM switch, as long as there's a linux client or one that can be built for arm from source, to allow you to use the books mouse and keyboard.
@@lst3044 totally agree VNC/RDP is they way to go if you're doing the average desktop browsing, mail, running a 3d print server kind of thing. But just from experience by using the same stick for low budget video capture, I know these will have drift/lag and becomes worse over time, making it useless for gaming.

REF; LAST comment of mine. The toggle button i thought was only for 2 cameras, i was wrong, it actually will toggle 3 times, and the sequence from the video is important as reboots maybe necessary. Now , its to get this on full screen. Capture gadget works great video/ no audio ,yet and response is good. I am just glad i can have this extra option with the ChromeBook.

2021 Asus Chromebooks(11.6 in) i have has front and back cameras,so this solution is a NoGo. However, i noticed on camera setting , there s a EXTERNAL CAMERA which would be your video capture. Is Pi more powerful than N3060? I imagine you can install Linux, or even precisely x86 Raspberry OS on the Chromebook and have zero input lag for whatever you need it to do.
The device is the second camera. Like, if u only have the frontal camera. After conecting the device, it's going to give you the option to rotate camera
I'm probably going to pick one of these adapters up but have you thought about using xRDP instead and just using the Chrome RDP extension to connect? That way you don't need the 400's keyboard handy. You couldn't really play games but for typing and such it should work fine.

Thank you for posting this video. I happened to have Chromebook and the HDMI adapter at home. It is a great way to save money without adding additional display for my Raspberry pi 4. But I have to connect the raspberry pi 4 with individual power. Otherwise, the pi will keep rebooting if I use the Chromebook usb port for power. Sound is not available from my pi.

@@KineticEgg I tried it with Mac Air just easier to use VNC in my opinion instead of placing keyboard over another keyboard .

You can use a console through the chromebook. There will be some input lag. Not too bad on slower games

Yes, it will just work at usb 2 speeds. You may need to lower the resolution or frame rate

Apparently you can run the Pi through VNC viewer and your chromebook. I have not tried it but it does sound intriguing.

Any hdmi device should work. First check that the hdmi adapter for your phone works with your TV.
