  • Today we're going to play Spoons, a fun, fast, and physical card game perfect for parties and family gatherings. Hi, I'm Chris Cannucciari, and welcome to Playing Games. Please subscribe, comment, and like. The object of Spoons is simple: get a spoon. It's a knockout card game where any player without a spoon at the end of the round is eliminated.
If you're the first person to collect four cards of the same rank, you can take a spoon from the middle of the table. Anyone else who notices a missing spoon can take one themselves. The player who doesn't get a spoon is out of the game. Spoons can be played with 3 to 13 players.
    What You'll Need:
    A standard deck of cards
Spoons (one fewer than the number of players)
    Setup:
Line up the spoons in the center of the table, making sure to have one less than the number of players. Shuffle the deck and deal four cards to each player. Place the remaining deck next to the player who will be the first dealer.
    Gameplay:
The dealer takes one card from the deck and either keeps it or passes it to the left. Players continue to pass cards, aiming to collect four cards of the same rank. When a player collects four cards of the same rank, they quickly take a spoon from the center. Once a spoon is taken, all other players must grab a spoon as quickly as possible. The player without a spoon is out of the game.
    Scoring:
The game continues until only one player remains. This player is declared the winner.
    Variations:
You can play a variation of Spoons where you're not out if you don't have a spoon at the end of a round. Instead, you get a letter, like the game HORSE in basketball. If you spell out SPOONS, you're out. This way, you can keep the game going longer without keeping players out of the game.
Spoons is an amazing reflex game using just a deck of cards and a few household objects. It's perfect for parties and family vacations, especially since it can be played with larger groups. Just remember to value the funny, silly aspects over any competitive impulses, and it's guaranteed to be an enduring favorite.

I recognize this game as Pig.
In Pig, your deck of cards varies in size relative to the number of players playing, from 3 to 13 players, so for example, if Pig is being played with say... 5 players, the deck will only use Aces through Fives for the game, or if there are say... 8 players, then Aces through Eights are used. (You get the idea, surely!)
You CAN use spoons in this game, but you are also welcome to use other objects like poker chips, candies, uncooked farfalle pasta, or actual coins, just make sure there is one less object than the total number of people playing.
The deck gets shuffled, and then, much like in the video, everybody is dealt a hand of four cards. The game starts by having the dealer counting down from 3, and when the dealer calls "Switch!", players must have a card ready to pass to the person seated to their right. Once players pass their cards around to the neighbour seated to their right, the dealer counts down again ("3... 2... 1... Switch!"), repeating the process as many times as necessary until somebody gets four of a kind.
Once somebody gets four of a kind, the player who got four of a kind must be quick to grab their token object, and once they do, the other players, regardless of whether or not they themselves have gotten four of a kind, must scramble to grab up their token object too. The player left without a token object in this grabbing frenzy loses the round and gains a penalty letter. The player with enough penalty letters to spell out the word P-I-G loses the game.

Now THAT'S a blast from the past! Though under a different name, _Bubblan_ ("the bubble" in Swedish) because instead of taking a spoon you would puff up your cheeks

Very cool! I learned a game from my Swedish friend recently and I may make a video on it. He called it Sjuan (hu-lan) or Swedish 7 and says it was passed down from his wife’s grandma. Is it commonly known?

@@Play-In-Games I had to google it but seeing it, yeah I've definitely played it! Seems like it has a lot of different names and regional variations across the world as well!
I'd say the closest pronounciation in English is probably "shu-an", cause there are Swedish accents that only have the one "sh" sound (that is like English "sh"), while most also have the "further back" one that is for sure more "H-y" but still with some uh, tongue/phlegm in there (like "chutzpah")

One time during a game of spoons, someone snapped a spoon (they were plastic). In a different game (same session), I intentionally went out first so I could rig each deck as much as i could, giving players automatic four of a kinds. In the last round, i gave the player going 1st a 3 of a kind and the player going 2nd the 4th.
I also did the same in a game of Uno where I gave one person 3 draw 4 all directed towards one person.
If youre wondering why anyone let me shuffle the deck, it's because i was the only one who could do a bridge shuffle
