Yes, "technical accuracy" was sacrificed for the sake of the plot. Soo what! You guys weren't spending a movie budget either. So good job working with what you had!
@@anton.chigrinetc.96 For a lot of the shots we used rubber bayonets (for safety) but with some close ups for example we used metal ones (both of which were blunt and used in a safe way)

God the idea of a 5-20 yard bolt action fight is terrifying. It’s practically the same as a fight at range, but at any moment your opponent could draw a sidearm or charge you
Fair point. This is the thing that always bugs me off in historical movies/series. If it's set in Middle Ages, all of the commoners and even some bourgeoisie/knights/noblemen look dirty and brown or grey all the time. People did take care of their hygiene and clothing and they wanted to look good or fashionable - even in the so-called "dark ages"! Then, in more modern war films too often the soldiers look too clean, to the point it's unbelievable how they manage to stay so tidy after intense fighting and exposure to elements. There needs to be a better balance in this regard, imo.

The filmmaker seems to be into this part of history and I expect simply more knowledge. Being shot at such a short distance with a rifle the bullet would have pierced both of them. Perfect example for instance is in "Schindlers Liste" where they shoot 4-5 men in row with one bullet while cleaning up the ghetto. It is a ballistic projectile with a lot of power when leaving the muzzle.
For those of you wondering if this is inaccurate it is here is reasons why 1 the brodie helmet is a mk 3 2 the German torso is supposed to have a stripe going down the middle (same with the pants) 3 the webbing for the German is inaccurate 4 The German is using the M35/M40 helmet

This is World War One, and even then sidearms were either A gifted via mail via family and friends or B given to officers, tankers, and other such people who could use them through both wars

Also you shouldn’t slice with a bayonet if it’s on a rifle, you would stab your enemy. The German soldier would’ve won If he didn’t slash the British soldier on the cheek, instead stabbing him.
The slash was taught as a movement in British bayonet fighting, so I'd immagine the Germans would have taught it as well. In a no holds barred fight, you do what you can.

I don’t think the German was shown in any evil light, it was just the fact, as you said, that at the time the guy was probably in an emotional state of anger and not thinking too straight
We wanted to find a reason for the fighting. We just agreed that we had an angry/grieving German soldier attack the other soldiers. The white flag being shown was to show that the other soldier did not want any part in fighing but the German continued to shoot, which gives the other soldier a motive to fight back (a survival 'killed or be killed' situation. It just made sense to us for the sake of creating a believable plot

Inauthentic/fake, the German soldier is depicted with a kar98k WW2 era rifle, when German soldiers in WW1- which the film is based on- were issued with the GEWHR 89 bolt action- which was much more longer in length barrel wise and feature a horizontal straight bolt handle, harder to eject, than the 98k

Very good scene but details make scenes great. Have a fresh mound where the German just buried a friend and have his sleeves rolled up and a little muddy/bloody. Then have the English soldier bury his friend and finish as another couple Germans walk up.
The first German round would have dropped both English soldiers. The subsequent incredible poor display of marksmanship is very hard to believe. Bajonet fighting gets taught in training, nothing like the bizarre display shown here
I agree but we were trying to make a somewhat entertaining fight scene with hints of realism. We didnt want to make a 15 second shoret were one soldier instantly wins. No one would watch that garbage

It depends on which bayonet their country issued with that particular rifle. Some nations used bayonets that are more of a spike, to stab, and others used ones that were basically trench knives with very sharp edges.

Both of the men had the chance to walk away, violence was not necessary, but the opposite is the only reason war exists. Young men love fighting, on one level or another it’s true. The German soldier turned around and choose violence because it is built into our biology. We both hate and love war, because that is how us young men are supposed to be.
Young men today are all about violence and this is just facts. Look at male gamers being excited over brutal games like fps, strategy, or any sort of violent genre.

It was a short film they didn't have time to get them dirty sad times and there's nothing clean about war when it comes down to it God bless all our fallen ones and the ones that didn't make it home
although the film cost me probably around £700 at the time, I already had the Australian uniforms and weapons so a short film like this could cost between £1000 to £2000 if you want to start with nothing. not to forget this was a University project so the camera equipment and all were free to use.
