  • This week on Whitetail Woods 365 we're planting two brand new clover plots in areas that we've previously grown brassicas. We're trying Cabela's Clover with Micro Boost and over the year, we're hoping to be able to make a good comparison against it and Tecomate and Whitetail Institute. In the Quick Tip segment, learn a little about nitrogen fixing and how using legumes as cover plots can naturally improve your soil. Links in the description below.

    Steps:
Before you plant, it is always recommended to get a soil sample tested. Amend the soil with lime and fertilizer according to the soil test results.
    1. Kill the existing growth, or mow down. We are choosing to mow over herbicides
    2. Prepare the soil - we are using a Land Pride PTO driven roto-tiller
    3. Cultipack the soil - we are using an old Brillion cultipacker, but anything you have to pack down the soil is okay. Even dragging around chainlink fence with weights on it can do the job in a pinch.
    4. Broadcast the seed - we are using an Earthway hand broadcaster. It’s a good idea to keep your seed setting lower than you think you need. You can always do more passes!
    5. Cultipack again - you need to press the seeds into the ground about ¼”. Use the same tools you used for the first round of cultipacking. Be careful not to bury the seed too deep.
    6. Pray for rain!

Thank You for omitting the chemicals. Very few "food plots" are chemical free nowadays, I guess because nobody knows how its done.

When it's all said and done the amount of money you put in to those pots, shall we say $200 a pound venison?
