      I have just bought this paint set in Europe and the set and the paints are very different from yours. They now have a small metal pan around the paints and many of the paints named differently on the back of the package vs. what's inside on the swatch card. They now actually named the colors just like the Paul Rubens colors are named. 609 Sepia is Burned Brown, 696 Viridian is Emerald Green, 599 Sap Green is Tree Green, 139 Cerulean Blue is Sky Blue, 003 Alizarin Crimson is Madder Red, and so on. (Not all of them, though, but it's still confusing enough.)

    Thanks. I love my Pretty excellent set. It helped me see which colors I use the most to set up a professional grade pallet. I ended up with split primary, four earth, Paynes grey, quin purple and quin violet, with a transparent purpose orange. It was great as a beginner and very affordable. I still use it for some travel for sketchbook and cards.

    Omg, Wow, this is my first watercolor set I bought almost 10 months ago when I first started watercolor painting ! I got it on Amazon because of the many positive reviews and the $20 price. My tin case is an aqua color and I think the colors are almost exactly alike but I would have to double check. I now have a Sennelier professional half pan set too, which I love but I still really enjoy my Pretty Excellent. As an amateur and beginner I mostly paint cards, bookmarks and super simple landscapes. Good thorough review as usual Alan, I agree that this is a good beginner product. Did you ever review your Sennelier paints? If yes, which one is it? Must’ve missed that one as I think I’ve seen almost all your videos. Thanks for your reviews, I always learn something.

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  4 года назад +3

      Oh it was more expensive in US! way more expensive. but still reasonable for 36 colors, right? Yes, this will really do well for sketchbooks and cards. its vibrant and easy to use. SENNELIER is one of my ever favorite paints.. as youve seen in my past demos of florals, and portraits, I always use Sennelier. The reason why I am still not reviewing it is because i am planning to complete all the 98 colors. haha. currently, i have the 73 colors already and im so excited to complete it. :)

      Watercolors by Allan Jay Quesada thanks for responding. I look forward to the Sennelier review. Wow you have a lot! I now have 24 half pans. They are so expensive over $6 -9 each plus tax is 9.25% in Bay Area plus shipping.

    Already placed my order. Thanks po sa review, I've been eyeing Paul Rubens, pero kulang sa budget. Ito pasok sa banga. Very detailed kahit mahaba, at gustong gusto ko po iyong comparison sa other brands. Very helpful para mas matulungan kami which one to buy na mura but with good quality. Hoping na may comparison si Paul Rubens at Pretty Excellent. Thanks

      go, lang sa Pretty Excellent. halos pareho lang sila in some colors ni Paul Rubens e.. sigiro mas may confidence lang tayo kay paul rubens na di siya kukupas kasi transparent sila sa information and they used some real pigments not hues. yes, will make comparison of the two po soon. stay lang po tayo rito. 🎨😉🙏

    I'm quite happy with this set, it's great for practicing. The low price makes it much less intimidating to practice and play around with (no fear of "wasting" expensive paint).
    Re: lightfastness: Kimberly Crick Art recently posted a video with the results of her testing. There are a fair amount of fugitive colors in this set, so it's definitely not something you'll want to paint your finished pieces in. I think they're quite great for practice and sketchbook work, though!
    I drew a black line down the middle of the rows and the swatch card to make it easier to navigate the layout - I'm not used to having such a large palette, so it was a bit confusing.
    I'm currently moving all my Pretty Excellent paints to loose half pans, so I can confirm that they're slightly larger than the generic half pans I got on Wish (slightly too wide to fit properly).

    I love my set of Pretty Excellent Watercolors. For $19.99 I believe they are the best for this price point. Of course, there are better out there, but not at this price that I have ever heard of. You do great reviews. The only thing I would like to know that you don't show is how well the colors mix. Some paints mix well, & some can be muddy even when mixed with proper colors. They are all a bit different. Other than that I find your reviews very informative & I love your art. I love that you do a peace when doing a review. Paints can perform differently in an actual painting. Sometimes swatching isn't as true as actual work. So thanks so much for the great videos. Hope all is well for you & yours.

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  4 года назад +2

      Hi. Thanks for recognizing my efforts here. I would really like to show how the colors mix, but it can be quite challenging to do it in a limited time. I guess, i also need to point out the principles and tips in identifying which colors mix well to avoid being muddy. I believe I can do that in one video and not necessarily in every video, specially that most paints i review are in sets with 12-36 colors. But incase there are others who are reading this, the main tip is to avoid mixing opaque colors to much. So, the black lines in my swatches show which are opaque so that's another note. Again, thank you and keep safe.🙏🏻🎨☺️

    I was actually thinking about purchasing this set! The colors look really vibrant, smooth and transparent for such low price! Also, I know an artist here on youtube who tried the student watercolor tubes from Paul Rubens (the artist is Victoria Gedvillas, she's a professional artist) but I wonder if they are the same as these because the tubes are under Paul Rubens name, not "pretty excelent". But great review as always! Very informative and helpful 😄

    Horay, you got your set hahah! That’s one thing I also notice now that you mentioned it, they’re very fine when I made my swatches, pero when I played around with them and used a lot of the blues I started to see the granulation come out hahah. It’s too bad they’re a bit more expensive now as compared to the price we got them at, but still quite cheap for 36 colors! And yes please do a comparison with Paul Rubens! I’d buy that one next - I’m still waiting on White Nights huhu... speaking of that one, could you also do a comparison of the tube vs pan version? So good to hear your thoughts as always! I’ll go sub and check out your friend’s channel hahah

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  4 года назад

      Thank you, Veyrius. :) Yes, it's actually weird that the granulation isnt consistent. My theory is that they only comeout in this brand when used in actual painting where we usually do washes and put more water. I would love to buy and review whitenights in tubes, but unfortunately, it is currently out of stock both in Shopee and Deovir. Id like to try the 24 colors given the chance. I was wondering if you noticed the glossy finish of some of the colors when you use them full strength? Also, I found they don’t layer very good. The bottom color lifts very easy. Was that your experience with this brand. Thank you so much for you opinion on this matter. I wish you all the best as the world starts to reawaken.

    Hello,
    I just purchased these paints for under $16 USD. Would you suggest that I buy an additional yellow & purple for this set? If so, which color & brand would you recommend?
    I will only be using these pains for florals on greeting cards.
    Thank you 🙏🏻

    • @AllanJayQuesada
      @AllanJayQuesada  3 года назад +1

      Hello. For my usage, there is enough violet but no enough yellows. But since you've mentioned that you do florals , it is understandable for you to reach more fore these colors. I would suggest you to get atleast 1 more cool yellow to support the lemon yellow in the set. a Lilac violet would also be a nice addition and a bright rose or an opera pink for the florals. for the brands, im not sure what is available in your place, but since you've indicated that lightfastness is not so much of an issue, I think some of the brands that would match your set are Winsor and Newton Cotman, VanGogh and Sonnet. :)

    I have to wonder how the cheap watercolors would perform on lesser paper. I like to watch Dr. Oto Kano's channel and recently she did a video on Burnt Sienna colors, and it was striking how different the colors looked on good paper versus the bad paper she usually uses (to put the paints "to the test.") I expect that people using low-cost sets would probably also use low cost paper such as Canson XL.

    I just bought a set like this but on the tin box it says Mai Liang but on the cardboard box it says Pretty Excellent (in small print). I think the paints are nice. The only weird thing is that the swatch sheet that came with mine has all kinds of different names for the paints. The names on the cardboard box are the names that you have on your sheet. I just used the names on my box and went in order and made my own swatch sheet. I've watched many different videos of this set and it seems to have many problems with the sheets lol.

      YESS!! It would be great to know the quality of the student grade watercolor papers (particularly the canson and fabriano ones) in comparison to some higher end papers. This was my first watercolor set, and overall I like it, but I admit I mostly use my Mijellos, Daniel Smiths and M. Grahams more these days, but I still use my Pretty Excellent paints, as well. I would have preferred that Pretty Excellent had a cooler brown rather than 3 similar warm browns.
    Btw, I did a lightfast test on some colors in this set but didn't write down the colors I used. Of the 8 colors, most remained unfaded after a month in a sunny window, but the blue faded and mottled.

      Hi Patti. These Pretty Excellent paints are great for fun use and practice. Im glad to know that you have great artist grade paints to use for mire serious works. Thank you for sharing your lightfastness test too. i hope, i could perform it too, soon. :)
