Used to ride dirt bikes, and 3 wheelers here in the 1980's before it was closed off to off road vehicles. it was cool place to ride had a mix of trails and small dunes compared to Glamis. That shot 3:18 I remember that we go right up the ridge then turn down into the bowl haven't seen this place in years. We would ride all the way to the train tracks and back across that valley. The trails were soft easy to go fast on motocross bikes I had a KX500 my buddy had a 250. I don't mind that they closed it off back then I thought it was not needed but today with all the Side by Sides in the deserts those guys causing damage. I don't even offroad anymore too many of them now. We didn't know the name of the dunes we just called it the area Baker. Back then got off the highway went to the back of the Chevron station there as a dirt road went back into the mountains.
I can say from experience this is tiring because every time you step sand falls from underneath you. I just hiked it this year. Thanks for the reminder.
Wow - the views from the top! Incredible, but noooo we hiked up some sand dunes in Santa Maria Bay in Baja and yeah, can be brutal! I love how much you are the same person as you were when you first started this channel. So, so likeable!
How's the weather down in Southern Cali? Glad you got this video in before the storm..........Now, take some of that sand home and make a Sand Box for your kids. Ha
@@californiathroughmylens The dunes were closed off to OHV use years ago due to erosion caused by the OHV's. Many of the dunes are erosion controlled by the vegetation growing on them which OHV's damage. There was a lot of controversy when they were closed off.
I wonder if that trail you saw could have been made by a kangaroo rat? They inhabit a similar sandy area in the eastern half of Washington state . Thanks for giving us a tour!
Love your site!! Curious on driving the roads. Husband just randomly picked this as a site to visit before spending time in Vegas with friends. But I am concerned about how much there is for us to do in Mojave National Preserve. Kelso Dunes looks lovely, and our kind of thing. You mentioned the drive was doable for 2 wheel drive for you (but mentioned rain could be a problem). But what about the rest of the Mojave NP? We have done Death Valley and Joshua Tree, and loved them, but kinda wanted something different. Thanks!
The main park road is paved the whole way, but most of the main attractions are off dirt roads. I haven't had any trouble with a 2WD car at the Kelso Dunes hike myself though. I hope that helps!
They say the booming sand is something special only a few sand dunes can make. The gravel road is totally drivable for any car, just go slow and be careful with the pot holes. My friend's Prius had a minor bumper damage for going fast. The best time to go there is in winter around late December to January. Highs in the 60s, lows in the 40s (usually).
Having done Mesquite Flat, which was a lot less work from what I can tell, no need to drive off pavement or walk that far to the highest dune, would you say it is worth it to go to Kelso Dune in comparison? Hiking up a dune is intense stuff and even in November seems outrageously hot.
With people hiking to the top how does the dune remain? Does the wind build it back up? Two sand dunes I've enjoyed are CO dunes in Southern CO and White Sands in NM. Thanks 4 the sunset pics Josh.
The dunes do not stay in one place, the wind builds and moves them all the time. You mustn't sleep near the dunes because the wind can change its blowing direction.
Kelso Dunes are no longer growing in size (no sand is being added due to geologic changes over the ages). They are somewhat stabilized by vegetation and the shifting winds.
Very deceiving climb like at Tioga lake from the outhouses to the water. It isn't very far distance wise but oh that steep terrain at that 9000 foot plus altitude!
Not a word about the world famous "Singing Sand Dunes"? From Wikipedia: "The Kelso Dunes are also notable for the phenomenon known as singing sand, or "booming dunes". Enthusiasts sometimes climb to the top of the dunes and slide down slowly, generating a low-frequency rumble that can be both felt and heard."
@@cami_ille I must have missed that since I am used to MUCH more information on the "Singing Sand Dunes". It is a place I have been to many times. There is a lot of info on why they sing and how you get it so "sing". There are others in the world and Wikipedia has a list.
You answered my question about the 2wheel drive. Thanks for always being so thorough with your content.
Thanks!
Thank you so much, very kind of you to send that over!
Thanks for including the note about the road and types of cars that can make the drive. Very helpful!

October seems to be the perfect time to catch colorful and long sunsets in southern California. I'd recommend Vasquez Rocks.
Yea, that is a great spot for sunset for sure!
Thanks for taking us there!
You bet!

Glad you enjoyed it!
Wow! Stunning scenery! Great video :)
Thank you!
Beautiful ❤️
Thank you for a beautiful video. I was not familiar with them. Love it!
Glad you liked the video and got an introduction to a new spot!
Hiking sand dunes is a really good workout. Very cool dune, better than the one we went to in Death Valley.
Beautiful, good job.
Makes me appreciate Algodones dunes even more.
I need to spend more time out in that area exploring!
Do the hike again and bring a board to slide down the dune. Death Valley’s dune are great too.
Just down the Rd on hwy127 north from baker there's DUMONT DUNES. shorter hike to the dunes. 4x4 recommended.
Excellent video 😊
My class went there.. we also went to Amboy Crater
How's the weather down in Southern Cali? Glad you got this video in before the storm..........Now, take some of that sand home and make a Sand Box for your kids. Ha
Currently weather is perfect
haha sand box 😀weather has been nice at the moment, even getting some rain
I hiked the dunes in Death Valley!! Looks identical. Enjoyed this video!!
Yep, they are very similar for sure. That is a long hike as well
Are going to do the travel town museum
Thanks for the great video. What was the ambient temperature?
Did you visit the Visitor Center?
It was closed, I am not sure when they are reopening
Long ago Kelso Dunes were a popular OHV area. Some parts of Kelbaker Road are in pretty rough shape.
Oh really, I had no idea!

Oh that is a great thought, it could have totally been that!
Cannot wait for round No. 4 at Kelso Dunes, Josh! You're going back, right!? 😆

Would you hike that again if you brought a sled? The way down would be worth it.
That would make it a lot more fun I am sure!

haha I mean it depends, for me it is worth it to get photos but I think for a lot of people hiking one dune is probably enough haha

The dunes do not stay in one place, the wind builds and moves them all the time. You mustn't sleep near the dunes because the wind can change its blowing direction.
Yea, they are constantly changing with the wind. It is crazy to just sit there and watch the wind blowing the sand all over

DO IT AGAIN BROTHER
Have you ever thought about conducting small group tours?
Not at the moment, but maybe I will do something in the future. Glad you like the videos!
Please go back just to make an experience of snowshoes and boards using. It must be fun. You can use flippers also for fun.

Dune the movie.
haha hopefully the movie is more entertaining 😂

Don't have to tell us twice about the effort to hike up dunes. 😂 That said, that sound is bizarre! What the heck accounts for the booming?
Yea, that is a good question. I need to look that up!
Torturefest!
haha yep 😂
