In today’s video, I discuss the trend of ‘deaths of despair’ in relation to decreasing religiosity in the U.S. We touch on how the repeal of ‘blue laws’ in the 60s/70s led to lower participation in organized religiosity and subsequent breakdown of social capital, community and sacred practices. According to a study by MIT and Notre Dame in 2008, the repeal of these laws led to higher alcohol/drug usage, even amongst religiously affiliated people. We touch on other factors such as financial inequality, globalization and urban decay as well. Clips from ‘Secret Life of Walter Mitty’, ‘Into the Wild’ and ‘Severance’ are used.
