    I can't imagine being Charlie at this moment. His mother was shot dead, and when he's offered a highly respectable job where he thinks he's finally free of the dangers of his neighborhood and station in life, only to find out that the danger is actively seeking to destroy him the way that his mother way destroyed. And people he cares about and respects were hurt during that attempt. The devastation he felt must have been unparalleled.

      I think there was another factor that was ignored in comments. He was dating the president's daughter. Their bbad aim upped the charges from attempted murder to attempting to assasinate the president. Automatic life term w/o parole.

    • @julieenslow5915
      @julieenslow5915 3 года назад +19

      And yet another angle in this encounter is that he truly loves the president in all the way people love a president. But he also knows the president and so he loves him as the father figure he lacked. And he just found out his being near the president is what put the president in danger. And then triple whammy: it's just because he's a different race. Nothing is fair, nothing is right, nothing is good in this attack. He feels terrible on too many fronts to even tell what they are - he needs to get away and think.
      "We don't know what the injury count is yet." can mean so many things when thinking just about Charlie! This is what breaks me heart in this scene. Charlie is extremely smart - and he's been black in Washington DC all his life. He thinks he knows all the ways that young black men can get in trouble or killed. But I don't think this is one he had considered: being attacked because he was close to the President and he is black. He was ready for it if it was because he was dating Zoey. That wasn't it. So now the place he had created for himself by doing an amazing job - he has to rethink that, too, and with it his whole future life.

      It's also been 20+ years since the end of the series, that's two full admins and at least a one term of a third. The only thing that kinda doesn't make sense about the situation is, why would the shooters purposely pick a time and place when Zoe and Charlie are with the president? How did they know that they would be with POTUS, and how would they know ahead of time that the canopy wouldn't be there? If they really were going after Charlie, the easiest thing would be to just kill him when he's going home. Or, if they really wanted to make a statement, try to kill him when he's with Zoe. Yes, she has SS protection, but only a handful of agents and surely much, much easier than trying to shoot someone when POTUS is around.

    • @thomasschulz2167
      @thomasschulz2167 2 года назад

      That information can be relatively easy to obtain with a little research and observation. POTUS had the no canopy policy for a while, presumably he's done presentations like this before. It was at Zoe's college. She's his daughter, and Charlie is his personal assistant. Odds are good that they would be there. It was a politically motivated attack, meaning big news. Hunting down charlie while he's off work doesn't really send a message, at best headlines would be "Black white house staff killed". Keep in mind these White Pride fucks were essentially a debranded KKK organization. With an ambush attack like that it's a matter of waiting for the opportunity to present itself. They could have gone to a couple dozen events, done nothing and tried again at the next one.

If the target was President Bartlet, then it would seem as the Secret Service and other law enforcement going on autopilot after the assassination attempt of the President.

      It was a civil rights philosophy debate about first amendment. They despise white supremacists, but the believe that white supremacists have the right to be white supremacists. The shooters were not ordered by and had no active collaboration with said white supremacist group so in the legal realm, they'd be going after people who are guilty by association and guilty by being hate monsters but never actually committed a crime.
      There's an argument for incitement which is a recognized exception of the 1st amendment and was somewhat relevant in the Josh lawsuit discussion a few episodes later and they talked then about how it would like politically motivated vengeance.

    I was worried when I first started to watch the series. I was in the mindset that it would be a dem/good, rep/bad show. Instead it was a well constructed nuanced show that I have seen multiple time....the only part that drove me batty was the smug-nasal voice of Mary-Louise Parker's character.
