The novelisation explains that the colosseum is similar to the structures Godzilla's ancient worshippers built for his species. Godzilla, hence, now prefers to sleep in the Colusseum because he misses his worshippers (or something like that). BUT, that is just the in-universe explanation. Adam Wingard was inspired by his cat to make Godzilla do cat stuff, like curling up in the tiny Colosseum to sleep.
Takashi Yamazaki also was inspired by his cat for Minus One Godzilla's 'fascination' with planes and the fact that he used his tail to destroy a few buildings in the movie is also how Yamazaki's cat makes things fall.

I'd sure like to know how long Godzilla had been sleeping there for that much sand and dirt and rock to accumulate all over his body to completely cover him from head to tail I mean for that much accumulation it should have taken years or even decades for that much rock,dirt and sand to completely cover a creature of Godzilla's size and yet this series was set sometime after the events of the 2014 film.

Fun Fact: Godzilla woke up from this nap right after battling the Muto Prime which broke off his main dorsal plates. That’s why they evolved to the way he looks now after growing them back.

He can sleep in pretty much any type of environment. Most Titans are reduced to living in only one type of environment. Godzilla, on the other hand, can pretty much, live in them all. The only place they can all congregate in are cities. At least, from what we've experienced.
