Been into blind discord meet up last year for study project. Had very creepy vibe with few guys when we met but they were super nice and decent when just talking on discord. To boys and also girls, never show how thirst you are in school study meet up for the first time especially with opposite gender. Practice common respect irl and people gonna like hanging out with you.
I met a girl on discord once and we hit it off. I flew out to Albuquerque to meet her after many, many months of talking and she stayed with me at an AirBnB. Everything went pretty well and it was a wonderful trip. Even met her parents. So basically it's a major crap shoot. Some people are definitely psychotic, but it can work out, too.
I kinda relate to Connor's idea of wacky circumstances make for great friendships, my best friend and I bonded on a school trip. We both had insomnia and stayed up chatting all night, we found out that we had a lot in common. The next night I gave her some of my melatonin to sleep and we've been best bros ever since.
Thats why i feel lucky that all the times ive went to meet ppl i met through gaming/discord it was fun af, now they are really good irl friends of mine.
Ya I think being on the same server as someone and chatting shit once or twice won’t turn out well meeting, but if your on voicechat with em 2-3 times a week or more playing games and aren’t just making in game calls then you can kinda gauge who you’re talking to more
I think this applies to any type of internet meetup for any kind topic that has a young audience. I suggest always meeting up with them in person first before staying in a hotel room with them. Have some kind of small meetup at a restaurant first.
me who has social anxiety: *guess ill talk to people in my head lmaooo* i've only gone to anime nyc since i live in nyc but traveling to another state or country would be... interesting alone. but even more if going w strangers
I’ve never used discord like social media. It’s always been like Skype or omegel to me. Talking to strangers like that intimately just seems weird and off putting.
Agreed. I only use it for its original purpose as a information resource and discussion hub where you can get quick answers to subjects that dont have dedicated wikis or forum websites. The transition of its marketing to a broad social media platform was a mistake
Same I've only used it to talk to my irl friends. Talking to random ppl on there, especially knowing the sketchy situations that have come from that, sounds kinda weird
Pretty much the same with me. I've only joined one discord server with strangers which I was there for the founding of (for a group of people who met on FF14) and there's only one guy who seems a bit weird. In all fairness he seems to be on the autistic spectrum so I just let him do his thing, he's harmless enough. Wouldn't choose to meet up with him though.
Same bro. I only use it like every few times a year to watch the game awards with my pals or talk for a little while on Christmas day and stuff like that.
The point where you're so lonely that you do creapy stalky shit, thats one of the lowest points you can get. Lonelyness makes you desperate what makes making friends extra hard so you stay lonely.
I spend a lot of time in vrchat and a lot of people meet up irl. Usually it goes well but I know one guy who got robbed... I do have some friends that I know I can meet up and it'll be safe, but they're quite far away. On the other hand I have friends I don't know super well but they're closer to me, so idk. For the not so close friends I'd never bring them to my house, I'd much rather meet them at a neutral place like a bar. But I'd like to do it eventually.
Every discord hotel room I've ever stayed in went very well. However none of the people were just randoms, we'd all known each other for years through discord at those points.
I might be weird, but I never had friends who I only knew online, nor did I ever go to an anime convention. After watching this I honestly don't feel like I've missed something
(kind of legit) tip: Cosplaying as a male character, if you're female, you will just naturally repel the majority of con creeps This has worked pretty much perfectly so far
@@samaraisnt I didn't say respect, it's just that if you're not cosplaying a female character, you just fly under the radar. Also the respect thing just depends on every individual person.. No no, lets not throw the lolicons under the bus. It only undermines the dangers of actual child predators when you compare them to weebs with degenerate fetishes
You are COMPLETELY correct. I've shared rooms at 5 conventions with complete strangers and even my roommate and their significant other. There was drama or discord EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. People always have to drag their drama around with them and share it with everyone else FFS. People come to conventions either for fun or for business, they don't care about your drama you're not automatically best buds because of it.
While I know some people on discord can be just horrible, I met my best friend on discord and about 2 or 3 years ago, he had a holiday in the UK and me and my other friend agreed to meet with him and hangout. Eventhough we didn't do a lot and just walked around London talking, he still mentions how much that day made his holiday and it just makes me so happy!
I would never room with people on discord. I already know how I am... And there are worse people on there. Depends on the server too. But I'd especially never meet up people from an anime discord.
As an anime convention organizer we really do have a hard time trying to keep that many people in check especially when the staff to con goer ratio is so unbalanced. We try to ask people to respect and give space for others but they just shrug us off so please be more patient with staff
Yeah, this is why I would never meet anyone from Discord/online unless I've done significant voice/video chatting, because while it still doesn't give you a full grasp of their IRL personality, it's 10x more accurate than just texting them. I actually met my first IRL gf from discord, and although we've since broken up, both experiences meeting up were good and she wasn't much different than how she was over video chat. Could be that I just got lucky, but I would recommend anyone planning on meeting anyone from Discord to at least do a few voice chats and preferably video chats beforehand.
Lol that hotel room discussion really brings me back to MTG tournament days... thank god eventually I said "fuck this shit, I have a big boy job" and refused to do more than 2 people in a room cause there were some nightmarish experiences lol
Bro fr. When I used to study medicine, I was in an EMT program out in a country town, and a decent amount of the students in the program and trade school itself were going into the military in some capacity, and half of them were absolutely MENTAL. We had this incident where a few of the military ROTC students in the auto mechanics class put high voltage electrical equipment (not turned on ofc) on their friend's nipples and he jiggled them on camera, it got sent to absolutely everyone and this one air headed chatty girl in our class ended up telling our instructor, (who acted like our friend most of the time, and only became serious when it counted) expecting her not to report it, she did, and the students in question got expelled from their programs, which absolutely spiraled out of control, leading to the military ROTC students declaring war on us EMT's, the next several weeks, several fights broke out, as well as a general sense of tension in the hallways, which eventually led the school to assign a resource police officer in the wing of the school where our classes were, after warning both classes that any further incident would result in instant expultion and or legal action, it all ended after one ROTC kid who was sure the police officer wasn't nearby skateboarded past the EMT classroom in the morning during an important exam and yelled at the top of his lungs "fuck all y'all EMT pussies, were coming for you" and got his ass absolutely handed to him by the cop, fun times man...
last year was my first time going to AX and I was supposed to go with a friend, but she ended up hanging with her own friends so I had to wander by my lonesome for the first 2 days lol but tbh it wasn't that bad of an experience, i just regret lining up for events
Note: please call shit out and dont sleep on convention floors! I know that sounds like a given but when u have been up since 5 am, walking up and down and only eating snacks in place of food, you get pretty fucking tired when ur friends are keeping you from heading back to the hotel. I had a guy feel me up, 14, while I took a short nap next to my friend as we waited for the rest of the group. She also fell asleep and I woke up because the guy brushed a bruise I had from days prior. I kicked him and he acted like it was normal and even tried to touch me again until I began yelling. That's when my friend woke up and he began scrambling away. It was terrifying and I felt so angry no one stopped it since we were in a very public place. Everyone just stared at me and the guy and talked about it between themselves. I was too shook to really get mad though, but my friend took me to report it.
Shared a room at Pax with a friend from school who I had no idea prior he had some real issues socially and just mentally so that kinda shell shocked me and another friend. Him drinking from the hotel cup, cleaning it out, and then farting in it and putting it back is a memory I can't forget.
The thing Connor said about having fun stories about meeting someone is a really good point. One of my favorite stories to tell is how I met the love of my life playing Duck Duck Goose and dancing to "Rasputin" at a convention. Love you, my Dancing King!
Jesus, this makes me appreciate my discord server so much😭 5 years in and these bros really are my fam, took some shit/cringe servers to find them though
I mentioned the Geneva Convention once and someone thought is was an anime convention. So asked them if they wanted to go. They looked it up and thought I was going to do horrible things to them.
Wow! This convo is so interesting. I’ve never done anything like it but I have couch surfed. However, I couch surfed through various connections and I’m still friends with those people to this day. Lucky me and my dancer’s life
I feel blessed that in my country, it takes maximum two hours by public transport to travel from one end to the other, which means I can attend all the major anime conventions (about 4-5 in a year) and don't need to spend a single cent on a hotel room (because I can just go home). Mind you, the cons are still huge, with around 100,000 people across 3 days.
We shouldn’t forget what our parents taught us “Never talk to strangers” (Its also the reason im lonely but its better than being in danger,i also have some trust issue so i never let my guard down with strangers)
I’m not an anime guy or been to a convention (on purpose) but this happens all the time with people in bands. Starting bands with guys you met once or never and next thing you know you’re in a van together for a month. Staying in hotel rooms with random “fans” or “fans” who invite you to stay at their house and use their shower. There’s a lot of creepy people out there. Glad you’re calling them out and that people like y’all are out there who confront people like that!
I've had a lot of good random rooms for cons through Facebook looking for rooms. I met a lot of chill people. I tend to talk to folks months before the con.
Fr my best mates and I have been friends for like over 1/3 of my life now, and the whole foundation is two things - being there for each other no matter what, and calling each other out on stuff no matter what.
Last time I went to a con I complimented this lady on her cosplay and she just starts talking to me nonstop about her life’s story and I’m socially awkward as is and I glance back and see that my fiancé and his siblings left. They come back like 20 minutes later and this girl is still screaming about her mom and how she wants to move out and when I can finally get away and ask why they left me I get a “omg I thought she was your friend!”... I haven’t gone to a con since
Their discord/online experiences are so different to mine. Topic communities where people don't have interpersonal talk about themselves and their other interests, doing meetups with people who aren't friend of friends or not mass meetup events with some vetting of attendees... I feel closer to, and have a better understanding of my discord friends who I talk to on a daily basis and have since IRC days than I do many of the people I know from IRL. Connections that start IRL in adulthood rarely stop being, well, closed. Even if you're friends for a decade.
lmaoo i never joined a server from other people other than the online friends i already made that are around my age so my online friends arent pedos suprisingly 🤭 (or hopefully)
Meet ups in person from a normal website like Instagram or Facebook usually works fine, but meet ups from anonymous websites like Discord or Reddit usually do not end well.
Man because of online university, I did a discord meet up. I was taking my Engineering group project members to Disney (I work there so I get friends in free) as a reward for our A. Well 3 of the 4 people were awesome but one guy gets in my car and starts vaping without asking. Then refuses to wear is mask. Then takes the vape into the park as well as a lighter which could get me fired. Then had me buy him something which he never paid me back for. Then asked if he could hug me, and when I said no, hugged me anyways. 10/10 do not recommend
At this point I feel like the only one in my friend group who has never had unpleasant experiences in regards to where they slept during conventions 😂 Everyone's always telling me horror stories of like 12 people crammed into tiny apartments, weird af people, horny af people who have never met a real life woman before, and so on. Or the other side of the coin, managing to avoid that at the cost of sleeping at some terrible 1* hotel in the next town over where everything is dirty and broken. Meanwhile, I always had a hotel room to myself in clean, nice hotels within walking distance of the convention location, for the equivalent of like 40$. The perks of booking your room 2 years in advance usually, I guess 😅
I once shared a room with a group of guys I didn't know. It was a huge dorm style room that I shared with a whole rugby team. As a small 22yo girl I've never been so safe, or had so much fun, in my life. I look back now and don't know what I was thinking, but I was broke and really needed the room. I now have a 21yo daughter and the thought makes my hair stand on end.
meanwhile, a lot of kids start dating on discord without even meeting them in irl.... that is not normal to me. But so many of my discord friends do that and that makes me facepalm fr
As a cosplayer, I feel fucking called out there. Like yeah, my rooms always have this rule where everyone has a designated space of where their stuff can go, but like its still a shitshow regardless.
Looking back, one of my fondest con memories is sleeping 14 people to a room with 2 queen beds (we were all broke high schoolers) we had people sleeping on the hotel desk and under it 😆 biggest fights were the late night panel crowd vs the early birds on sleep schedules

To boys and also girls, never show how thirst you are in school study meet up for the first time especially with opposite gender. Practice common respect irl and people gonna like hanging out with you.
Normal and respectful people don't need to be told that >>' It's a deeper issue

I met a girl on discord once and we hit it off. I flew out to Albuquerque to meet her after many, many months of talking and she stayed with me at an AirBnB. Everything went pretty well and it was a wonderful trip. Even met her parents.
So basically it's a major crap shoot. Some people are definitely psychotic, but it can work out, too.
Imagine if a discord mod met up with a 12 year old girl
*Laughs nervously*
I don't wanna imagine
Yikes
That’s scary af
Nope.
What if the discord mod is 16 years old tho
Connar is a real human. Confident, adventurous. Recognizing that life isn't just a safe place where nothing ill can ever happen.

It sounds like a good idea to go to a convention with people you have never meet them in real life and most likely don't know their name
If you're unable to drive, give them your car keys and tell them where it's parked, they'll surely come and give you a hand!
Ian Byrne don’t forget about telling them your bank account info so they grab you some cash when you’re in a hurry
Don't forget to give them your house keys they will help clean your house
Don't forget to let them install cameras in your house and rob you or possibly kill you!
thank you for talking about the importance of calling dangerous behaviour out, it’s extremely important
Ngl a trash taste special where it's the whole $100 Vs $1000 thing but anime convention hotel rooms would be kinda interesting
Thats why i feel lucky that all the times ive went to meet ppl i met through gaming/discord it was fun af, now they are really good irl friends of mine.
Ya I think being on the same server as someone and chatting shit once or twice won’t turn out well meeting, but if your on voicechat with em 2-3 times a week or more playing games and aren’t just making in game calls then you can kinda gauge who you’re talking to more
discord is the 'socialmedia equivalent' of craigslist... change my mind
I deadass have actual conversations with people in my head when I miss them lmao
@@asmrmakii I'm glad i'm not the only one
I'm fine with talking to strangers I love meeting people at events and concerts
Even having the words "Discord" and "Meet" in the same sentence scares me
Can confirm as a US Marine, it's either full chill or balls to the wall. Zero in between.
Hearing this stories makes me happy that i have no friends
Every discord hotel room I've ever stayed in went very well. However none of the people were just randoms, we'd all known each other for years through discord at those points.
I might be weird, but I never had friends who I only knew online, nor did I ever go to an anime convention. After watching this I honestly don't feel like I've missed something
(kind of legit) tip:
Cosplaying as a male character, if you're female, you will just naturally repel the majority of con creeps
This has worked pretty much perfectly so far
What if you don't want to crossdress to get treated with respect? :D
@@samaraisnt I didn't say respect, it's just that if you're not cosplaying a female character, you just fly under the radar. Also the respect thing just depends on every individual person.. I've had someone think it was ok to (lightly) kick me in the shin because they didn't like the character I was cosplaying
@@alyssajakielek687 owie shoulda kicked them back
@@rat1170 they were like still in highschool, and if might have been their first con or something, and they might have just gotten over excited because of everything, and got carried away....
I've acted really dumb because I got carried away by the atmosphere and stuff like that, so I'm going to give her the benefit of the doubt because I don't know her and probably won't ever see her again.... And I was like at least 7 years older so.. I mean it's better for me to just brush it off and have fun than get upset over it.. plus I'm accident prone, and have some health stuff, so my pain tolerance is high enough that a few kicks to the shin isn't really much lol
On the flip side, cosplaying as a female character, as a male, you naturally attract con creeps.
So people actually make friends on discord and meet up and stuff?
Damn im 20 and that is something I cant quite get my head around ngl.

I just realized that at the back of my head whenever i heard corpse's voice I've unintentionally been picturing conner sometimes🤦♀️
While I know some people on discord can be just horrible, I met my best friend on discord and about 2 or 3 years ago, he had a holiday in the UK and me and my other friend agreed to meet with him and hangout. Eventhough we didn't do a lot and just walked around London talking, he still mentions how much that day made his holiday and it just makes me so happy!
i mean
it would be pretty scary being around a bunch of child molesters
I would never room with people on discord. I already know how I am...
And there are worse people on there.
Depends on the server too. But I'd especially never meet up people from an anime discord.
As an anime convention organizer we really do have a hard time trying to keep that many people in check especially when the staff to con goer ratio is so unbalanced. We try to ask people to respect and give space for others but they just shrug us off so please be more patient with staff
When joey asked why can't anything taht you plan on discord go right? i was like because it's discord, it's literally in the name lmao
I was thinking about the name itself too.
Conner be the thrill seeker of the group

To get more room keys without looking suspicious, say that you accidentally laid your phone on your keys and deactivated them and you need two more.
Everybody gangsta till the receptionist asks you to return the old ones
Most hotels deactivate previous keys when you get new ones as well
just say you lost it, not all keys work like that so that literally doesn't even work and you lied for what?
1:40 im in the US with a US phone and at my big local con there is NO SERVICE whatsoever throughout the majority of the convention center inside
As a girl and as someone with a lot of standards, I'd fucking never go unless its with friends from irl.
Connor stories are actually amazing
Jesus, this makes me appreciate my discord server so much😭 5 years in and these bros really are my fam, took some shit/cringe servers to find them though
I mentioned the Geneva Convention once and someone thought is was an anime convention. So asked them if they wanted to go. They looked it up and thought I was going to do horrible things to them.
Lol
Were they 5?
Ahhhhh I'm lucky then, all my discord friends have been rlly good

Good on you guys for telling people to call that shit out. Cahlling that shit out should be happening everywhere.
We shouldn’t forget what our parents taught us
“Never talk to strangers”
(Its also the reason im lonely but its better than being in danger,i also have some trust issue so i never let my guard down with strangers)
Well, talking to strangers is one thing. Opening up to them is another.

My discord meet ups and hotel trips were all fine. It definitely doesn't always go wrong, you just gotta be choosy and not stay with random people
Last time I went to a con I complimented this lady on her cosplay and she just starts talking to me nonstop about her life’s story and I’m socially awkward as is and I glance back and see that my fiancé and his siblings left.
Garnt: *THOSE. NEVER. GO RIGHT.*
_What, you mean those go LEFT?_
meanwhile, a lot of kids start dating on discord without even meeting them in irl.... that is not normal to me. But so many of my discord friends do that and that makes me facepalm fr
Simpps
Really glad that most of my discord experiences meeting up were great, kinda iffy to go to a hotelroom together tho ngl.
This segment looks like Joey talking to two bums who "love" the thrill of being poor.
I’m relatively lucky when it comes to meeting people at conventions I’ve had no horrible interaction
As a cosplayer, I feel fucking called out there. Like yeah, my rooms always have this rule where everyone has a designated space of where their stuff can go, but like its still a shitshow regardless.
When in life you roll a d20 to receive the Good IRL Discord Friend Pass, but life gives you 5 instead of 20.
"a lot of people on discord like underaged girls and you need to call that shit out." *Joey sweats*
Looking back, one of my fondest con memories is sleeping 14 people to a room with 2 queen beds (we were all broke high schoolers) we had people sleeping on the hotel desk and under it 😆 biggest fights were the late night panel crowd vs the early birds on sleep schedules
