  • Amoco petrol commercial from 1975 transferred from U-Matic videotape. Features a classic 1930s grey/silver automobile known in the ad as "The Escape Machine". The jingle was written and sung by Allan Johnston from HertzWalpole Advertising. Some years later he teamed up with Alan Morris to form advertising agency Mojo which would do jingles for many commercials in the 70s and 80s.
The tape containing this ad came from commercial director Barrie Smith's collection.

Brilliant ad, great, catchy song. Great sentiment as well - escape with someone you like in your escape machine. I still remember this ad and the song from all those years ago. Amoco sure had great ads. Wonder if any ads from today will be remembered - for the right reasons - in 40+ years time ....

Fantastic ads, highly cinematic. They were shown in full cinemascope in the cinemas at the time. You may remember Val Morgan cinema advertising.

This particular Amoco commercial is the short length television version. It was the first such commercial to be broadcast in color given the fact that 1975 was the year the national release of color broadcasting was launched. I remember it very well, since it had a significant novelty on me. I do remember now, I saw the long theatrical version which was shown during the pre feature advertising which preceded the movie "Picnic at Hanging Rock" (1975).

This commercial is also the short version made for television. If you can get hold of the long version made for the cinema, that would also be appreciated. I saw the long version of this ad at the State Theatre in Sydney when I went to see the Bruce Lee film "The Big Boss" back in 1975.
My Mum wouldn't allow me go go and see "The Way of the Dragon" later on, so I had to wait 10 years to see it on VHS.

The thing was back then Petrol came from 2 or 3 refineries. Supposedly the companies added things but Tanker drivers told me that was Bs. ( I worked in an old style garage as a kid). It’s different now the Petrol is different & some of it is very close to minimum requirements. Shell still refines as does Mobil in Melbourne but I believe a lot of petrol is bought on the spot market in places like Signapore.
