I'm reading The Keep right now and Jennifer has a writing style and imagination I envy. It gives hope to the struggle of writing, knowing how she worked (and still works) at writing well. Thank you Jennifer for all your insights.
I have tried to read this woman’s books. I give then 100 pages and the writing is tedious and the characters are flat and the plots are uninteresting. What is the opposite of a “page turner”. Yet she gets award after award. Turns out Abe Lincoln was wrong…”you can fool all of the people all of the time.”
Interestingly, she herself has said that her success is largely due to luck. To paraphrase, it's kind of about pleasing the right group of people at the right time. She said that there are a lot of good writers out there who don't or haven't gotten the recognition that she has, and she doesn't necessarily think that it's because she's a better writer. She just got lucky. I like her writing, but the same subject matter--the sex, the drugs, the music studio, the underbelly of the "cool and the rich"--what's the appeal? The same subject matter over and over again.

You seem bitter.
