  • Skipper Ian Wightman shows how he uses tubes to deliver trawl-caught langoustine prawns to market - alive and in top-quality condition.

    Operating his vessel EILIDH ANNE out of Largs in Ayrshire, Ian sends his prawns to market alive in individual tubes. In this way, he takes advantage of an insatiable European demand for high quality live langoustines - and gets the best prices for them.
    This video reflects a typical working day trawling on board the EILIDH ANNE in the Firth of Clyde. Ian Wightman was the first skipper in the UK to join the Responsible Fishing Scheme.

    Yes; larger tubes are used for larger individual Nephrops. Mortality rates are remarkably low (

    saw some kids claiming 90% of these trawls are bycatch, saw this video and it looked like 30% nephrops, some hard back crabs, and 60% kelp.
    so sad to see the kelp bycatch ;_;

    How long will they live out of water? Being a commercial lobster fisherman in the great state of Maine, I was just wondering. Thanks, John.

    How depressing. This place used to be a thriving fishery, supporting cod, plaice, herring. This is now all there is left. 98% decline in stock and species. Yet still we continue trawling it.

      If it was destroying the sea floor, it would have been gone decades ago. Actually, trawling is something akin to farming. Farming hasn't destroyed the earth yet... AND, maybe it has improved it, which would be my guess. Maybe you should just eat veggies,; that way, nothing would die because of you.

      @@dnumdug Norway hasn't really left it. Both Norway and Sweden trawl for shrimp but in a sustainable way with smaller trawl doors and a cage that lets any other creatures than shrimp escape. I think we should definitely have less trawlers(Especially the bigger ones) and use cages more when fishing for prawns which is a very good method but for shrimps you kind of have to trawl

      The Scottish Government have done more to keep fishing sustainable than most UK nations have , in England and Northern Ireland its legal to tow quads ( 4 nets at a time ) ScotGov allow only twins . On West Coast we also have 300mm square mesh panels fitted in nets of boats over 150hp . Get a grip other nations .
      Crab can live a long time out of water, you knew that right? they'll be fine.
