Peter Overlaet is correct Mark Johnston, they even show you in this video the weight dragging across the seafloor destroying any coral that has taken 1000's of years to grow which provides home's for shell fish and smaller fish which feed bigger fish which feed bigger fish. I leave in two days for Alaska to go commercial fishing but i don't do this, Bottom trawling is the fracking of fishing, not sure if there is a worse method of fishing for the environment. Mark how do you think this isn't destroying the seafloor by dragging huge heavy equipment over the bottom , this also has the most by- catch of any method of fishing.

your way off the mark with that statement theirs many different types of draggers most use relatively light foot ropes trawling over clean , muddy bottom where its detrimental to go over rocky or coral only leading to damaged nets which don't catch fish , if you want to look at habitat destruction look at dutch beam trawlers , that'll get you twisted up .

You will never see someone intentionally trawling over coral lol, no one wants to rip there nets up and possibly get the nets hung ing the bottom to where they end up loosing it. That’s a ridiculous argument I keep seeing from misinformed people who get there info from people who don’t know much of anything about trawling

@ed C. While I can see your point you are also quite misinformed. Fish targeted by bottom trawling don't live in habitats such as corral reef etc. If they did it still wouldn't be towed over as it would destroy the nets. Areas of obstructions on the seabed are kept well clear of as damaged fishing gear can be very expensive in repairs & lost fishing time. The bottom trawlers work on is generally sand/mud & certainly not corral. The only things in contact with the bottom are Hoppers, Doors, Clump (on twinrig), Tickler Chain, the rest is above the floor. Most fishing areas is where the Ocean floor is slightly higher than surrounding areas, or it's a place where different currents converge, giving it a constant, strong, flow of water. This is the reason why fish will gather in this areas. It is also the reason why the bottoms in such areas is quite resilient & is constantly regenerating itself. While not being against trawling I also don't buy into the scaremongering targeted against it by many groups. That being said though, I also believe that Britain (or certainly certain parts of Britain) should have done the same as what the Faroe Islands done many years ago. Put a total ban on trawling within 12 miles of the shore, this is an absolute ban including their own vessels, & just have the area open to small long-line fishing vessels with restrictions on hook size so only the bigger fish are caught. This protect's the juvenile fish & their breeding/feeding grounds but also enables a small fleet (up to a-couple hundred) small commercial vessels, each crewed by 1 to 4 people to operate successfully creating more jobs & contributing vastly more to the local economy than 2 or 3 big trawlers catching the same amount of fish would.

@@petej8556 Well put - i agree with the 12 mile trawl limit as a lot of inshore vessels get gear towed away by trawlers who dont want to co operate with the inshore fleet
