Just want to say that for anyone who feels anxious, panicked, frozen in social situations, know you’re not alone, there’s almost certainly a few others feeling the same, plus, in my experience, everyone is far more compassionate and caring than we believe. I’ve vocalised feeling particularly anxious when in a social situation and was met with nothing but empathy and understanding. We are all human, we all have anxiety, it’s a normal alarm system protecting us, it just gets a bit loud internally for some of us. You’re not alone, you’re not on the outside, you’re the same as many people and totally loved and accepted no matter what or how you’re feeling.
I do mental exercises whilst I’m in social situations and this really helps. My anxiety tends to try and attack head on straight away and then calms down, and because im so happy it’s gone, it’s actually fine after that. It’s only for around 15 mins if I stick to the below and be strict with it… I do things like - focusing in on the person I’m talking to, noticing things like their hair, eye colour and what they are wearing. Actually describe it in your head. - if I’m at a sat in a meeting or at a table I rub two fingers together and focus in on the ridges of my fingers. I really focus on those sensations. - I feel the weight of my body in a chair if I sat down - I put my shoulders back and smile which helps to trick my body into thinking I’m ok. - I listen to affirmations every morning and night to get it into my sub consciousness! Hope this helps someone!
I have high functioning autism so I have some trauma from school as well as a job I had a few years ago where my boss bullied me. I think I’m going to give this a try
I relate to almost all of your early childhood experiences, and then some. I began doing serious work on myself about 5 years ago. Such as regularly exposing myself to social situations, journaling daily, re-evaluating my beliefs, praying etc. I've made a lot of progress. But still, I consider myself far from where I want to be as a person. And I have often thought... "Why healing from social anxiety is so hard....?" "Why does it have such immense power of over us?" It is like dealing with cancer. Years of struggle. And even then the results are not certain. At some point, you just accept the fate. But this is definitely intriguing... Although difficult to comprehend the concept and theory of it, but intriguing regardless. Thank you for sharing! Will try to practice it
Thank you so much for sharing. You explained it really well and helped me to connect some dots. I had a lot of similar early experiences and am just about to start EMDR.
Hello George, your story really resonates with me i have a social anxiety i believe it originated from a heavy bullying at the elementary school especially the 6th grade i tried exposure since then I'm now 26 years old but it didn't work!!nothing improved at all so i searched about the EMDR what i understood from your video that we can through this technique to deal with the old bad experiences and erase them to make them no longer trigger social anxiety at the present time is that true?i have the feeling that is not so realistic but no problem giving it a shot, can you tell me more or link me with the person who treated you, sorry for my skepticism it's because all the solutions i tried and failed, thank you
Hi Shawkat, Thanks for watching the video and getting in touch. Healthy scepticism is a good thing as no therapy is a panacea. One of the downsides with exposure in relation to social anxiety is that for it to work, we need to externalise our focus of attention and drop all safety behaviours - this allows us to re-evaluate the sense of social threat which underpins the anxiety response. In terms of the EMDR, we don't erase the memories as such, but desensitise and reprocess them so that they are less sensitive to current associated triggers. This means that they don't get activated as easily and overwhelm us with panic and anxiety. I'm an accredited EMDR therapist so I did the therapeutic work on myself (using a TAC scan for the bilateral stimulation), with guidance from my supervisor on selecting appropriate treatment targets. If you're interested in trying this out then contact me at gmaxwelltherapy@gmail.com or enquiries@accesscbt.co.uk George
try therapy with Psilocybin mushrooms, I also had bulying in high school and spent years in isolation because of that, but after therapy with mushrooms it was like flipping a switch/
What happens in EMDR is memory reconsolidation , when old neuron sinapse pathways are literally replaced by new ones , transformational change . You can read Bruce Ecker ( psychoterapist phd ) ' s book Memory Reconsolidation .
you could also consider therapy with Psilocybin mushrooms, if you in a ft world country chances are there are many opportunities and people dedicated to that, SA really sucks and it can make life much more difficult that it has to be.
@@brianslender4220 Although they're illegal in the UK, it's Liberty Cap season here now and Uncle Ben's rice is significant to those in the know. As with lots of things, the government are unlikely to make psilocybin legal but there are lots of people choosing to self-medicate. My only considerations with regards to psilocybin and social anxiety are the importance of set and setting in facilitating the right outcomes from a trip. If we are seeking to remedy the "sense of social threat" does the trip need to occur in a carefully curated social environment, or does the individual just need to focus on the desired outcome while tripping like Paul Stamets did with cigarettes? Not sure what the clinical trials suggest in this area but definitely interesting.
Yes. I'd suggest, record your struggles, and what you would want instead, on your phone recorder, say about 10 minutes. Then search RUclips for an EMDR video you like, the ones with a pattern or ball moving across the screen, and listen to the clip you recorded as you follow the EMDR video. As the EMDR video plays, it helps you integrate what you recorded, and repeat for as long as you feel triggered. You should notice more ease in that situation next time you go into it. Repeat with anything challenging as many times as you like over the coming days

it's so difficult having social anxiety sometimes you just freeze or shut down, or feel overwhelmed hypervigilance being on edge all the time.

hope its been well so far

For those of use who can't afford therapy, is there specific techniques to self administer EMDR for social anxiety?
