You totally revealed this Nocturne to me. By the way, after listening to several interpretations of this lovely piece, it seems (imho) that not so many pianists emphasize the waltz section as you do (Kultyshev does a bit). Your playing definetly gives a different taste to the whole thing, putting even more magic in it. I'm practicing this by the time and I found it unexpectedly hard to actually sound like waltzing, so hats off to you sir for that too!

I noticed that your Schirmer edition has some chords very different from my edition, for example in M. 41, I don't have the French 6th chord you mentioned, but rather F natural, A, & D#. I welcome your help!
Thanks, I'm happy you like it! I don't know about those editions you mention unfortunately. But in bar 41, the Schirmer also has F natural -A-D# in the left hand, it's the B in the right hand that makes it a French sixth chord. But it's possible that editions differ, especially in Chopin, then you can choose whichever one you prefer is my attitude.

As a piano improver I am very much aware of how it is necessary to play a low base note often on the first and the third beat of the bar with finger number five. Which obviously requires the pianist to have a spatial awareness of the note in question. Henrick appears not to be looking to locate the note in particular. I would love to know how such accurate spatial judgement is acquired? Is it purely hours and hours of practice? Are there exercises to help develop this important skill?

This piece just sings of chopin. It is so delicate and tender, but you cant help but to feel bit melancholic. Thank you Tsi! Well the A section is not that difficult, but the B section is quite heavy to go through with all the changing notes (and the two times a semitone apart on top of that is rough for the muscular memory...) But it doesn't need to be that fast really.
You might have mentioned, since you emphasize the dance-y character of the middle section, that this nocturne is one of the Chopin pieces that were adapted for the ballet "Les Sylphides."

Hey!! Amazing video, just one question! How is it a French 6th chord at 5:53? Isn't a French 6th chord supposed to be built on the flat 6th degree of the scale in which it is in? The chord in question is a Bb7b5, which is not the flat 6th in either F minor or A flat major. Thanks in advance!!
Sorry for the late reply here... So the French are tricky, they can transpose to two chords - it's also a Fb7-5, which is on the flat 6th degree of Ab, to which it resolves. This is clear in the voice-leading (and Fb in the bass), but it's confusing because the same notes could also be the other chord!
I appreciate the detail you go into. Unfortunately, I am not a fan of the set of Nocturnes, but you do put in the best case possible for it. This one especially is probably one of my most disliked, but thanks to you, I gave it a chance.

As a structure it's straight forward ABA or ternary form (with the B part repeating itself transposed one half step up). In a broader sense of "form" you can argue that "Nocturne" is a form in itself. However it's much harder to define exactly what that is, becuase a Nocturne can be many different things. That's why I haven't done it explicitly in any of my videos, but if you get to know the music well enough you will know implicitly what is "Nocturnal" in a piece.
