Tree law is no joke. Don't be a jerk and cut down a tree in a neighbor's yard, you might just get a hefty fine.
As I recall the rule in Germany, when I lived there, required the person or persons who damaged or destroyed a tree had to pay for the value of the tree from the time it was planted till it was expected to be harvested or would die by itself. In many cases, the trees are considered to have a life of 200 years. The cost of replanting was also included and some other charges. It's been a long time since I lived there but it was a big eye opener since we had to have a large $$ amount in our yearly budget to pay for trees which were damaged on private property.
I just did a very quick search on Google. Tree law varies by state but is based on common law. Every state has its own rules but many include a monetary fine as well as jail time plus repairing the damage. If a person cuts down a tree on someone else's property they may be required to pay for the value of the tree plus pay for a replacement and it's value. This also applies to a fence. Each state, each country or territory has it's own rules. As one article states "if tree law is invoked, lawyer up".
The first story is exactly why everyone needs a dashcam in their car.

Just for the record, I don't believe he had to take that test. They would have had to go on the evidence they had, which was "He almost said...."

@@HH-ru4bj I think this is a special case because in USA personal and private space was highly honored by most people. Invasion of that space was considered a huge no no that's why op family won big. The judge already made his decision when said neighbor step into op's lawn.

Wow, guy in the first story went out of his way to lay a rake down and then stomp on it.
Last story was more malicious compliance.
There's something called treelaw. It basically goes, you mess with a someone else's trees, it'll come back to bite you way harder than you could ever imagine.
never mess with tree law.
That Sequoia story has another winner... The carpenter that made the dining set must have been estatic to work on such rich wood.
From story 2: I do not know the laws in the UK, but here in the States if you are awarded such an amount, even if you haven't received that amount you still have to pay the taxes on said amount. Even if you have not received a penny you still owe. That was the only part of the job my dad hated. OP would have won a lawsuit and before OP received anything he would still have to pay the taxes for said amount. My dad always wanted to just look the other way, but then he would be pressured to pursue it. From story 3: That reminds me of the story where Karen was buying something that costed $90.00. She wanted a 10% discount on the item. The clerk told the cashier to give her $10.00 off. Karen demanded to have the 10% discount instead. The cashier gladly gave her the 10% discount. After Karen had bought the item she smirked and as she was walking out looked at her receipt she realized if she would have shut up she would have received the item cheaper than the 10% she was given.
My H.O.A is limited in it's power by our state. We have a tree lawyer on speed dial. She also inspects and supervises the ground crews. Fortunately our community borders on protected land under the administration of state and federal employees. Trees are the lungs of the planet. Thank you RedWheel for the tree law posts. Why are there so many stories of people getting their trees chopped down by bitchy neighbors? Shouldn't the "professionals" who get hired to cut down the trees get confirmation that the customer actually OWNS the trees/properties BEFORE they do any work?
Good point. If only those bitchy neighbors didn't go off half-cocked.

Some people probably down bad and wouldn't care if the one paying them own the tree or not. They know that they could just blame the one paying them and claiming innocent anyway.
