Altered Magazine Pages With Easy Overpainting: Painting on Magazines and Coffee Table Book Papers

- Today we look at more ways to alter and distress glossy pages from magazines and coffee table books with overpainting so that they become something else that you can use in your journal pages, collage, or other mixed media work. Overpainting is just that, painting or colouring over the original image once the gloss has been sanded off.
I am showing overpainting with watercolour, gouache, gesso and soft pastel, and a combination of these.

I just love what you did to the picture of the Doge. The lady is very lovely, too, but she was lovely from the beginning. Whereas he was just a very stern looking rich old man in black and white. And now he's got flamboyance!
Hello Centi! I do not make good portraits but I enjoy playing around making abstract ones and I love, love how fun and forgiving soft pastels can be in this. Fun and mysterious portrait making at the same time. 😺
This technique is fantastic! It’s also very satisfying to “break” the image and then go back and “fix” it. Thank you for sharing your talent and ideas.
Hi Valori. Thanks bunches. I like that aspect, too, especially as I am not a strong realistic painter but enjoy giving it a whirl. This sets me up and lets me go wild. Thanks for getting in touch! Kelly
Love, LOVE all of these pieces, especially the very first arch, the man, that sort of looked like the pope, fabulous job on him Kelly, And the last multi arches in terracotta colors. Oh, good lord, I can't wait to get started on sanding down some pages, that I loved, but always felt were a "shiny, lost cause"! Kelly, you are super duper! Thanks as always for these delish techniques! ;)
Shiny Lost Cause would make a good name for a 1970's rock band. Just saying. 😺
Thank you for sharing this technique and all the very interesting videos you make. You are such an inspiration!
Why thank you. That is truly lovely to hear. You have made my afternoon. 🌷🌻🌼Kelly

I love the look(s) of this! But I’m not familiar with gouache paints. But I’m new to all this stuff. I’m certainly giving this technique a try. What fun! Thanks!
❤️💜💚
Hi Paige. Gouache is a paint that is heavier than a watercolour but it is water-based as opposed to acrylic paint which has a plastic base. But remember, you do not have to use gouache because I did, especially since I used them since they were all I had on hand and the only reason I have them is that I won them in a drawing a while back! I tend to work in watercolour and ink. Now go give it a try! Kelly
Hello and thank you I tried it and it came out so good if I say so myself love watching your videos ❤
Hi Diane. Well done on you making some gorgeous pages and thanks for letting me know. This is what I like to hear. 😺Kelly
Way cool! Thanks for sharing
Thanks bunches, Deb. And thank you for stopping by!
Fabulous tutorial! ❤
Thank you, Debbie. That is truly nice to hear.
These were wonderful, I thought you were going Frieda Khloe and then you went Carmen. I think this looks like so much fun. Can't wait to try it.
Hi Theresa. It is fun and super budget-friendly and can be done so many ways and is not fattening. What's not to love? And it's a good day when I find a way to turn the words "Carmen Miranda" into a verb. 😺
@@BookandPaperArts It auto corrected Kahlo to my granddaughters name Khloe, oh, I need to check before I hit send.
Kelly, I was so hoping you were gonna give the lady with the headdress a Frida-esque unibrow.
Yea! And it is a good day with I can make a verb out of the words "Carmen Miranda", headdress-wise. 😺
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤭
Very creative thank you❤
It is my real pleasure, Deborah. Thanks for stopping by!
Very unique great video
Thank you so, Deirdre.🌷🌻🌼
This is so much fun
Thanks bunches, Debbie. I hope you make some great pages! Kelly
I find these techniques fascinating; however, my concern has to do with copyright laws. It is my understanding that if you use copyright images they must be unrecognizable when you are finished. Many of what you do leaves the images recognizable. How do you deal with that? Thanks!
Hi Kathy, what a good question. There are two things in play here. One is that most of these images are in the public domain meaning that they can be used freely and for commercial use. Next, there is law called Fair Use which says something like you can use an image to make a new image if it is an original and unique piece. It does not have to be wholly unrecognisable. Have a look online and do a little reading about Fair Use and it should put your mind at ease. Keep me posted! Kelly
Am thinking...if Nature had copyright in place, we humans may not have existed! 😅
@@earthrooster1969 Well said, Suhita! 🌷🌻🌼

Wow! Three vids by you in a row! I've died and gone to Heaven!! Just started this one, but I can never wait until the endings. Kelly, this first arch pic that you did, is simply stunning. But was that paper the arch was on just book page paper (with shine, of course)?Didn't going over it with thinned out water colors make the book paper warp? I'm asking, as I do love your technique and want to know what I'm in for possibly after I get the papers wet? Thanks!
Hey Lynn. This was from a coffee table book with black and white plates. I sanded it back (you can see the before and after in the video for contrast) and yes, the paper does warp, even more so if it a thinner magazine page. As it dries, however, it flattens itself (mostly) and you can always iron it under a paper towel and it will lie straight then, or just let it be wobbly for texture. So many options! Keep me posted. Kelly
