The app you need for transport in Kampot (and most other towns/cities in Cambodia) is Passap. It is like Grab but specifically for the white rickshaw tuk-tuks that you can see at various points in this video. It's super easy to use, gives a fixed fare and route suggestion for each journey. Way easier than 'negotiating' a price with a driver and you can easily book one from your location/to where you want to go without trying to explain in Khmer. The rickshaws that use it have orange Passap signs on them.

As always Alina shows and explains some of the best things about Kampot and area. She enjoys putting Dad on the spot, but he is obviously enjoying his travels with the daughter. Didn't know anything about pepper plantations and to be honest never really thought about pepper, cause it always been everywhere. Short and sweet tour of a nice looking place to visit.

Thank you! Yeah can’t say I ever considered where pepper comes from so this was interesting. Also another ‘unique’ thing we did after the tour was a taste test of like 10 different pepper blends that they make. Quite literally just tasting pepper lol my mouth was on fire.

Hi Alina , thanks for sharing. Great that you got spend some time with your Dad there.
I spent a lot of time in Thailand and Cambodia between 2009-12 and also did side trips to Myanmar(Burma) and Laos. I did volunteer teaching and quite a few music gigs in both Thailand and Cambodia.
I had a job in Vancouver that allowed me take an unpaid leave in the winters during that period.
I would have loved to bring my parents there but I don't think either of them would have done it at the time. Especially the long haul flight.
I love Kampot..My personal favourite in Cambodia. I have been there a few times and stayed at a place on the river (about a 10 minute motorbike ride outside of town) called Bodhi Villa, an old Buddhist meditation retreat turned backpackers haven that had a recording studio and live music on weekends. I stayed in the dorm (2.50 USD per night ) a treehouse (9.00 USD per night) and also a floating bungalow (12 USD per night). You could literally roll out of bed right into the river lol. Did a lot of paddle boarding on that river. I became friends with the owner and recorded in the studio there and played in the house band with him on weekends entertaining tourists from all over the world on 2 different visits there. It was such a blast. All of the locals and staff that worked there were amazing people.
Sadly that place is gone now and got developed into something else.
I would rent a motorbike and cruise all over southern Cambodia and made a trip to Rabbit island off the coast of Kep in Kampot province. I visited that temple cave you went to plus another bat cave. You had to walk through rice fields on these wooden boards because the fields were flooded. I rode a motorbike to a small mountain that my friend told me about where a witch lived inside a cave at the top. These kids from the small village led me up the mountain to the witch. I met her and gave here a pack of cigarettes and she showed me her cave which was basically her own little Buddhist monastery. After that I cruised up Bokor Mountain where I hit a pothole (the roads were crap back then) and wiped out on my moto. Luckily I was just bruised and made it up to the top and back down.
I have watched your other videos on Cambodia and Pai and Chiang Mai. Very interesting how much Cambodia in particular has changed so much. The first time I went to Siem Reap in December of 2009 there was still dirt roads. Phnom Penh still had dirt roads in 2010 -11. Everything looks so much more developed now in Siem Reap , PP and Kampot. The temples in SR are incredible. I visited a lot of small ones that had no tourists ..You could hear the din of the jungle and lots of monkeys around. Otherworldly experience.
That same trip ( Dec. 2009 - my first trip to SE Asia) I also ended up in Pai ,Thailand where I spent Christmas. It was beautiful.
One thing that probably hasn't changed is the food. Oh the food is amazing in both countries and so cheap. BTW Rikitavi used to be called Rikitikitavi lol. I believe there was one in Phnom Penh too. Is there still Happy Pizza there? I had a Happy Shake once. I thought it was weed but it was actually mushrooms haha! I was up all night.
I hope to make it back to SE Asia sooner than later.
It is an extraordinary part of the world. I hope I am not disappointed with how much it has changed. Obviously lots of foreign investment has helped perpetuate that.
Cambodia was (maybe still is) a country of extremes. One day you would be having a great time and the next day you would see something totally heart wrenching... so maybe things have lessened in regards to corruption and the crime/seediness.
I always felt that Kampot was a safe haven from all that though.
Anyways, just thought I would share some of my stories. A lot more where that came from.
    Scott

I live here in Kampot and have for the last 3 years. Enjoyed your vlog, but you made a mistake about us not having Uber. Cambodia uses PassApp. I use it all the time. It is great to know what the fare is before you get in the tuktuk, and you don't need to worry about translating your destination to the driver. Also, Kampot is more of a destination to live as an expat. Super cheap, if you want it to be.

I have tried - I think! - most pepper samples from everywhere, but nothing matches or comes close to the taste of Kampot pepper - the genuine one that is and not the one sold as Kampot pepper. There is - or was - a pepper shop in the vicinity of Kampot town that sells the pepper, mostly pepper beans. I bought a small portion of pickled pepper beans and this was amazing with stake. Highly recommended.

Great presentation of Kampot. It is a very relaxed and pleasant place. I and my Cambodian wife has some land there and we go there every time I am in the country (I currently work elsewhere). Rikitavi is a nice place and we stayed there just before Christmas and have good food that fits the more cautious traveller. I also always visit the Kampot Pie and Icecream Palace that is at the riverside on the corner opposite the Fish market restuarant. It has been around for at least 15-16 years and have very good ice cream and pastries.
A correction: there is a another great booking service for tuktuks in Cambodia that service Kampot and that is PassApp. It is very easy to use, just as Grab.
Be aware that those booking services also charge the drivers for each ride (around 1400 riels), and sometimes the drivers may ask you to cancel the booking to avoid paying the fee. Don't do that. Instead, round up the amount it costs to the nearest 1000 riels and then add another 1000 riel. Then both the service can survive as well as the driver get compensation for the fee they need to pay. They have low pay and the competition is fierce among the drivers.

Rikki Tikki Tavi was a single-episode cartoon special in 1975 where the title character was a very cute and valiant mongoose who defended his [human] family from evil cobras. We watched it a few times as kids, loved it. Seems to be available on RUclips. I just learned from googling: the story is actually part of Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book.

An other thing i really dislike is they never want to queue ..you are queueing as everybody should , and a khmer just come over , take your place ..i dont let my self do that....they have no education , many of them cannot even read or write their own language...
Dont tell me , it is an exeption as i live in countryside of kampot for 10 years..i hate to go in town , see those drunk bareng , fat of the beer they drink ,with their shorts.. Disgusting !
Kampot used to be a nice town before all those horrible expats escaped Sihanoukville , and changed the philosophy of kampot....i am glad , i am from them all...
