Kinda, trading up does indeed work like that but it only works if the value of the item is very high to the INDIVIDUAL (not market price) you are trading up to. If both parties are in need of something the other has and there's no easier way to obtain it, then suddenly a trade between those 2 things seem very fair
But of course this vid is complete fake BS and you can tell these are all his convention friends as he literally calls one out by name. But if it were real he'd definitely not escalate this quickly

That part is believable if you assume the guy was just playing along for his video and being nice by giving away a $3 pack of cards. The $350 tag on the card he gets three trades later is the cap for me. I don't know the value of any Pokemon cards, but at least one person must have willingly beat himself in the head for like $150-$300 between the pack trade and the $350 card. If he started with like a $300 card and traded up to like a $500 card after like ten trades, I might be more inclined to believe.
