Balloons don't "hover". Winds aloft are 60+ mph. In 24 hours it should travel 1440 miles to the east. They're blowing smoke and lying out their butt holes.

This is the fourth balloon. The first three overflew CONUS and Alaska during the previous administration. It was included in the PDBs, that were never read.
The balloon was under intelligent control, but telemetry doesn’t take that much data. High resolution imaging does and that would be stored locally and collected at time of retrieval. Somewhere along the balloons final course would have been a boat that was going to retrieve it. Now the data is either sitting with the wreckage off the Carolina coast or it’s already on its way in a small, self guided submersible. Now let’s see what this guy says.

What, you don’t recall when Trump bragged in 2020 that he had a "super-duper missile" under development? Clearly you're not up to speed on the Burton JK-3R anti-aerostat precision-guided munition recently introduced by renowned defense contractor Wayne-Powers. 🙃
Levity aside, the jet fighters of today operate at much faster speeds than WW2-era German fighter/bombers with cable fenders (just as a prior example of aerial cable-cutting technology). Assuming that the F-22 _did_ have wing-edge cutters, which would impede its supersonic aerodynamic performance (and increase its radar profile), it's easy to imagine the fighter’s wing being sheared off while trying to cut a cable at jet-turbine-driven velocity. Granted, the F-22 can slow down, but that's intended for landing approaches and airshow fly-bys; trying that in the rarefied air at 60K feet (where the Chinese balloon has been spotted) would reduce aircraft stability and increase the risk of a stall.
Also, Canada lost control of a stratospheric weather balloon (reportedly 275 ft high vs. Chinese balloon’s 80-120 ft., depending on how many bus-lengths you go by) in 1998 and the Chrétien administration was worried it might drift into Russian airspace (it eventually landed near Mariehamn). Jet fighters from multiple NATO member states, plus Sweden, fired their cannons and rockets at the balloon, yet they failed to down it. Imagine all those thousands of wasted 20-30mm rounds, plus ejected casings and linkages (although, the F-22’s M61 Gatling might return those bits to the ammo drum), raining downward. 😬
