Pacheco was discovered by PUERTO RICAN PRODUCER AL SANTIAGO: Alegre Records will always be remembered as one of the pioneers. This pioneering label was one of the first to light the way for salsa and even the Spanish-language music industry. It was even a stepping stone for Fania Records co-founder Johnny Pacheco, whose first album by the Johnny Pacheco y Su Charanga orchestra sold over 100,000 copies and cemented the legacy of Alegre Records. Many other legends of the genre can trace their careers to encounters with Alegre Records founder Al Santiago, a gregarious and loquacious entrepreneur whose boundless energy was evident even at a young age. The man who initiated and discovered Johhny Pacheco when he was 18 years old. Born and raised in New York to Puerto Rican parents, Santiago played piano as a child, but gave it up to take up the saxophone ("I disliked piano so much that I used to play 'The Minute Waltz' in 30 seconds so I could go out and play softball," he once said). He started playing in a band that included his father and uncle, and when his uncle quit, Santiago took over, leading the entire orchestra. Although he was barely 18, Santiago had an ear for new talent; he traded older ones for newer musicians until, soon enough, his father was the only member of the band. However, performing was not Santiago's destiny. After a fateful brush with trumpet prodigy Buck Clayton at a wedding, Santiago realized the limitations he would face as a musician, recalling, "I know I'm not an exceptional instrumentalist, and the only way to make money is to be a superstar performer/leader, not a sideman." uDiscover Music Store - Jazz ADVERTISEMENT Santiago took a different path, borrowing $1,800 from his family and opening a record store called Casa Latina del Bronx in 1951, all while going to college and studying business. A local demolition forced the brief closure of Casa Latina del Bronx, but Santiago eventually bailed on another vacant store in the Bronx, this time under the name Casalegre Record Store. In November 1955 he welcomed customers and soon the store became a bustling Latin music center. However, that was just the beginning of something bigger Santiago had in mind. In 1956, he and clothing entrepreneur Ben Perlman ventured into music recording with the launch of Alegre Recording Corp, which capitalized on Santiago's skills as a tastemaker and producer, as well as the store's popularity he had cultivated. After years of recording people who would go on to become big stars (Pacheco, Eddie and Charlie Palmieri, Francisco "Kako" Bastar, among others), Alegre Records was sold to Branston Music in 1966. Santiago remained involved in production and then, in 1975, Alegre was bought by Fania, its main competitor. Fania's other co-founder, Jerry Masucci, hired Santiago for several production sessions, but some fans believe even now that Masucci did not promote the artists on Alegre's roster as much as they deserved. Alegre morphed and changed over nearly two decades. Both the store and the label are fondly remembered today as "The House That Al Built," and few things can tarnish such a formidable discography. Choosing the greatest hits among the collection is nearly impossible, but several recordings stand out for the way they spearheaded sounds, such as charanga, pachanga and boogaloo, and foreshadowed the history of salsa.
