Over the last 30 years I've lived in Iquitos, frequently visited, adopted my 2 youngest sons from the nearby jungle and love that place! I've never felt in danger there save for traffic. Traffic laws are a great source of amusement for the drivers of 3 wheeled 125 cc motorcycles with a bench seat on back. The whole city is what the wild west thought it was. I love the folks who live there although the poverty is crippling. Show respect for these folks try your best to speak Spanish and 99.90 times you'll get smiles and laughs. If you can't laugh at yourself, don't go there. They have cast-iron stomachs because they've been eating their own food forever. Be cautious about the food on the streets which looks good, tastes good and will eat your gringo guts. Tip these folks liberally, they work long, hard hours and often have a bunch of beautiful kids to feed. Go have fun and remember, you are visiting in their reality, life is not what you have lived in the US. Enjoy yourselves

"I almost forgot, for those looking to venture there, several agencies offer the tour to Belén. After researching many, I ended up choosing one called Yakumama Tours, which is among the best in the area. Importantly, always carry small bills if you plan on buying anything, as electronic payments are virtually non-existent there."

The big blue rundown building is an hospital that they never got to finish. They found out the ground was not solid or something, so it was dangeuros to use

"Wow, thanks for that eye-opening video! Truly, I admire your courage for delving alone into the heart of Belén. Reflecting on my trip to Iquitos with two friends, we embarked on the intriguing 'Venecia Loretana' tour. The atmosphere was thick with mysticism as our guide led us to that hidden corner where shamans craft their enigmatic potions for love ties and divination. It was a mix of awe and adrenaline! But caution is key: as dusk approached, with the sun casting its final glow over the river, we witnessed a tense moment: two tourists, left vulnerable without a guide, had their camera snatched in the blink of an eye. The heartbeat of Belén is strong, showing you a raw and authentic side of Iquitos. But a heartfelt piece of advice: if you choose to venture, ensure you do so with an organized tour. Both the safety and magic of the experience are worth their weight in gold!"
