Planting onion sets

- With somewhat warmer conditions on the way, I can plant some onion sets. I often grow from seed but sets can be a convenient way to quickly fill a bed with onions. I give a couple of tips to help reduce bolting.
Hi Jonny, can I ask what's the size of your amazing garden? What a set up! And mate, I think you do a great job explaining your methods on how you do things. And particularly for me your more instructional vids on your fruit trees. Look forward to the next one!
Thanks! I'm not sure on the overall size. We had 12 main beds that were approximately 4 x 14 feet, but then took two of them for the polytunnel. Then we have another for asparagus, the north and east facing borders, and the fruit cage. It's too big, really!
Three years ago we set up a 'nature camera' to see what was visiting our new garden. To our surprise our onion sets were the target of a fox, magpies, pigeons, and red squirrels! All of them attacked the sprouting onions! Admittedly the foxes bit into the onion and then dropped them, but all the other considered it a 'feast'. Perhaps it was the sight of 'green shoots' during the hungry gap, but I am not so sure, there was plenty of other 'tasty' items available. Could it be that these animals recognise bulbs as a nutrient rich source of food? I have no idea, but they certainly have a taste for them here1
Interesting. I've heard it said that the birds - blackbirds in particular, I think - see the young shoot sticking up and think its a worm so give it a tug. They're not so smart, so keep doing it without learning 🤷♂️ The blackbirds really aren't too bright - we have one here at the moment that spends most of the day fighting with his reflection in the chimney of our pizza oven 🙄😂
Just looks chilly there Jonny 😂😂 but that could be the winter coat and hat. I’ve done some shallots. But like you I’m not impressed 😢. Cool still here a top of 10c but it’s not raining 👍. Have a super week keep warm, Ali 🇨🇦
The weather is all over the place - we had a touch of frost earlier in the week and then it was baking hot yesterday 🤷♂️

Morning Jonny! Another great episode! I didn't purchase sets this year as they looked dismal. I'm going to look for starts when I go into the village today. The tomatoes germinated in only three days, so I need to pop to the shops and pick up supplies I should have had on hand for them. Potting them up today. For your weekly giggle, snow flurries this past Saturday, 15 yesterday, 27 today, back to 10 tomorrow. LOL I can't win. I haven't seen precipitation in so long, I forget what it looks like. Planted a very large tree yesterday, and it's powdery, bone dry soil down two feet!.
Have you ever grown egyptian walking onions? They are ridiculously popular here. I've never grown, nor cooked with them.
Wow, I imagine it will take a huge amount of rainfall to rehydrate your soil; is it usually that dry at this time of year? I haven't grown walking onions yet either... I'm not after the exercise so maybe don't need veg that can run away 😂😂😂
@Jonny's Kitchen Garden this is our cyclic extreme drought. Neighbors angered down 4 feet today doing cattle posts, dry like coffee grounds. No good for spring sowing of major crops.
Wow, 4 feet and no moisture 😮
