- In The Aeroplane Over The Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel is one of the most critically acclaimed albums of all time. But why is it so acclaimed and is it actually good or is it just hype and memes? Today, I answer that question.

Background music by the legendary Hideki Naganuma for the Jet Set Radio soundtracks
Neutral Milk Hotel is a band that was started in the late 90's after Jeff Mangum did some work with the Elephant 6 recording collective. He got together with a couple of other musicians such as Julian Koster to make Neutral Milk Hotel. In 1996, they released On Avery Island. Then in 1998 they released In The Aeroplane Over The Sea. This album is loved by many people in the indie rock / indie folk rock / DIY scene. it has so many fantastic songs like Holland 1945, King of Carrot Flowers and Two Headed Boy. This album is also victim to many weird theories and memes thanks to 4chan. We talk all about it in this video!

Facts
what a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all around the sun
what a beautiful dream
that could flash on a screen
In a blink of an eye and be gone from me
I'm 38 years old my older brother turned me onto this album in 2000 so I've had 22 years with it and it really is one of the best albums ever at least in this genre. It just has a very good flow to it. Its very nostalgic for me it's like comfort food. I actually dont mind all the memes because memes are an art form in it's self and if anything it's just gonna keep the album relevant for future generations not that it would need help with it. But On Avery Island is also a very good album and it gets over shadowed by ITAOTS .
Ya I actually completely agree with you on the meme thing, it definitely will keep the album alive for the future generations. I don't think I've heard On Avery Island in full yet actually 😬 but I've heard a few songs and definitely enjoy what I've heard
I’m with ya on this.
This album is beautiful
Agreed
Your combined humor and editing is not going unnoticed, this is a great video
It's one of the best garage band indie albums of all time. Hell might even be the best its always a suggestion I give when someone says name the best albums of all time. and that fuzziness just adds to it's charm and I'm a big BIG proponent of having more horns and brass instruments in modern rock music if the album has horns in it chances are I'll probably enjoy it.
I totally agree, with the idea that the fuzziness adds to the charm. I also agree with your horn point, music could always use more horns
Garage band?
Came here from chapter 8 of the Pachinko serie. Fell instantaniously in love with this song. Now, I will listen to the full album for sure !
Definitely check out the full album if you haven't. It's a really great experience
saw them in 96 was awesome ! they never came back to detroit and by the time they were finished as a band I was married so I was done going to shows. Great album and video
That must've been an amazing experience!
This album was one of those times I listened to an album the first time and walked away thinking what the fuck was that, then it clicked a couple weeks later and I’ve loved it ever since
Your editing is amazing! it reminds me of nakeyjakey. You earned yourself a new sub
Thanks dude! Jakey was a huge influence on the channel :)
HAHA KYLE I HAVE YOUR REDDIT NOW
good video as always, honestly it's crazy how consistently high-quality your work is.
I first heard of this album on RYM last year. When I first gave it a listen, I thought it was nothing special and never put it on again. A few months later I revisited this and being 100% honest, I had a shit ton of fun. Drumming on this album is top-notch, and there are a few solid bangers on here that get me hyped no matter what (Ghost, Holland 1945, Untitled, etc). And, of course, lyricism on this thing is god-tier solely because everything's covered in cum. Thanks again for the good video, keep it up Kyle!
Thank you Speggy! I'm glad you're enjoying the videos. I think I forgot to mention the drumming in this video but yes the drumming is definitely worth mentioning.
Also I'm scared that you have my reddit
I loved the editing style in this video Kyle, well done!
Thank you Ethan!
I got to see them perform this album in it's entirety during their reunion tour. One of the best shows ever. And the audience was half hillbilly hipsters; it was awesome!
loved that accordion reference
Haha yes! I'm glad it didn't go unnoticed
well, here i am again on your video hahaha i caught myself getting addicted to this album once again and surfing through youtube watching reviews and stuff about it and the more time passes, the more i enjoy this masterpiece
this album is like floating on a giant pool while it's sunny, but still cold, you're outside but it smells like an old book, or a library for that matter, the melodies, the lyrics, the confusion is what makes this record the turning point of my life as a music admirer
Production quality is awesome in all of these videos bro. Glad I randomly found you on here when I did lol
I really appreciate that! I'm happy that you're enjoying it :)
came from tik tok but bro your youtube is so good, keep going man this is gonna get big
Dude thank you so much! That means a lot to me. I've got no plan to stop so stick around for the ride :)
I really didnt like it on first listen, the title track yes, KOCF part one yes, but the album no. Then, one night, with headphones on, Two Headed Boy pt.2, I cried. The album became as much a part of me as my arm. Just adore it. Thanks for the vid!
I'm glad that the album eventually clicked with you!. Thanks for watching the video :)
I agree completely Two headed boy just really hits me in a soft spot.
I stumbled upon this band when I was in the indie folk/alternative rock phase. When I heard them for the first time I fell in love with it because of how weird it is, it was quite refreshing to hear some new type of genre I would recommend to try folk punk if your a fan of the neutral Milk Hotel, you’ll find shitload of folk punk bands that are waaay weirder than the NMH
NMH was/is my favorite band during college and I had the opportunity to see them when they played again. I also got to have Julian (saw player) come to my house and play Xmas songs on saw on a tour he did. I got him to sign a saw, it was so awesome. In many ways my life was complete at that point ha. To me what makes NMH so great is the purity of it. It’s just music that meant something to them and that’s it.
"is it actually good?"
yes, thank you
Indeed
Great video mate, love the animations and the tone, not taking it too seriously interspersed with some serious moments. Keep it up , am now subbed
The user "Ojos de Videotape" refers to a Song of Charly Garcia, from an album called "Clics modernos" you should listen to it
came from tik tok and this definitely helped me appreciate the album more! I’ll have to revisit it soon
I'm glad! You definitely should give it another listen. If you remember, you should drop your thoughts about it here after you listen to it again.
If I meet somebody who doesn't like the album, I don't trust their taste and I lose respect for them.
this channel is perfect for my adhd brain
man i fucking love this channel
Thank you :))
I wanted to hate this but...Hilarious and true. Also multiple hair rufflings. Good content, need to get a legit 80's comb for the feathered hair though lol
9/15/23 "Jeff Magnum" is an alias for "Matthew Sweet" NMH is a side project of Matthew Sweet.
the way Kyle pronounces ojos 😍
tremendo, charly garcía just mentioned!!
This is such an amazing album seriously
Ojos de videotape is a song by Charly García published in the album Clics Modernos (1983). I recommend that song and the album as a whole
Awesome. Thanks for the rec!
ar hen tinaa
1:29 i have been playing guitar for less than a month and can play every song on this album lmfao
My guy literally said "the only girl I've ever loved... Buried her alive one evening 1945" he was in love with her it's not a theory
I literally wanna hear this kids music literally. Ahhh youth.
my favorite part is that he sounds eerily similar to wordoftshirts doing one of his drunken sailor songs
It's very impressive that this 12 year old girl even knows who Neutral Milk Hotel are. Well done young lass, I expect great things from you!
Killer analysis! Short, simple, and covers all the weirdness!
I've never heard of this song or this band before today 5/30/2023. I heard it on the radio in my car. You said the singer is not a singer or something like that. The first person I thought of was Colin Meloy of the Decemberists, the voices have similarities. I thought it was the Decemberists at first, which was what made me keep listening. I was wondering what the strange instrument was and just figured it was synthesized, turns out it was a saw. I like it all.
This album sounds great on vinyl. It is amazing production.
Honestly, I’ve never understood how people do not like the vocals on this album. Like, with the production, there is some songs that have some distortion to them and I can get how that turns some people off, but with the vocals, Jeff Mangum performs them extremely well and beautifully and Idk how people hate on them. Plus, I even hear people say that they don’t get the hype for this album which I think is nonsense when it’s one of the most beautifully performed and written albums of all time.
Actually, some of the guitar parts on this album are tough rhythmically. Two Headed Boy & Ghost, for example
Oh interesting. I don't know much about actual theory, I just play instruments haha
I never got or understood this album for the longest time; I’ve given it so many chances, but never really connected with it emotionally. But, for some reason, at least for the most part, this time it really clicked with me. I still don’t necessarily love it, but I do like it; I do think it’s very good. 🙂👍🏼
This album is made of pieces of my heart and soul
It's a song devoted to those who have been hurt really badly by the French.
is itaots good
long answer: yes
short answer: yes
Love this shit. Seriously, keep shouting until they know what you mean, because you’re pretty good at this:)
Two words: April Ludgate
After the facts, everyone is a genius.
But before, staring at a blank page, there are nobodys or creators.
damn thats where anne went
I'm excited for your channel to grow, the content is way higher quality than most 1k sub channels
Thank you!! That means a lot to me :)
A tip is when you edit, your normal speech should be in -12 DB and your peaks should be in -6 DB. It indicates your peaks are coming all the way up and ringing, that's what it does.
It's the OG Hipster album. The 2000s hipsterdom wouldn't be anything without it.
Kyle vid Kyle vid
Thoughts on their earlier work?
yeah, it's actually good
Agreed
Just got told I was in this video
Haha Caleb!! You're a legend!
they literally made an album before this
What he said in the beginning is so not true, I just love the music.
The title track is beautiful song
Wow I never knew Jeff Mangum married Keira Knightley.
Love ur Chanel
Thank you!
good video i love it! itaots is my second favorite albums next to blond by franky ocean
Thank you!! I haven't listened to Blond yet but I really need to

-Godspeed(The Most Emotional)
-White Ferrari(Best song)
-Ivy&Pink+White (E-Girls Favorite)
-Nikes(High pitched voice)
-Seigfried(Best Song Lyrics)
@@masterpingu8251 I’ve heard Nights before and you’re right, that song is mind blowing haha. Thanks for the rundown on some of the tracks!
The sort of album that makes everything else slightly worse after you hear it
Honestly wish I liked it at this point. The first song is great though. I'm a Bee Thousand boy myself.
what do you mean fuzzy production?, and are you dissing Jeff Mangum's voice, what the hell do you mean vocally untrained? his voice is amazing!
Y'know... While we're on outragrous conspiracy theories, doesn't Jeff Mangum look an awful lot like Trevor Moore? There were a handful of Whitest Kids U Know sketches and music videos by Trevor that involve him messing with time travel. Also, Trevor DID make a lot of music of his own. Coincidence? 🤯
It's actually magic.
beautiful
Playing a saw isn't unusual.
Definitely the album ever
Wow! Took until half way through to mention Anne Frank, congratulations
lmao
Great vid
Thank you!
LOVE this album, one of my favorites of all time. Also big ups for including "Humming the Bassline" by Hideki Naganuma as some backgroound music
Im not sure how good it us but its interesting enough for me to give it a listen or two..the title track is good
Listened to it 3 times. Only liked songs #1 and #3, but overall good listening.
It's one of the best ever. I don't care what anyone says
great vid
I couldn't stand NMH at first they I was lucky enough to see them live twice when they were touring a few years back the first time I saw them was like a religious experience I was hooked the second time I saw them I was lucky enough to meet the saw player had him autograph my arm and my ex wife tattoo artist made it stick
It's not lo-fi. It's extremely high fi.
The correct terminology is, "Hella-High-Fi"
the album is mostly rather mediocre (sometimes a bit annoying) ... not really bad, it has its moments, but an absolute "MASTERPIECE"? NO
Is that a dirty ass sock on your mic? WTF!!!
Noooo it's a pop filter!
Airplane*
Aircraft**
Is that a boy or a girl, I really can’t tell
terrible song
Here after episode 8 of pachinko series🥲😭
i still don't understand this album, it's so meh.
