Grew up in Rockford as a child from 59-73. Late 60's a great time as a kid. Walk down Broadway with mom and pop stores. Stop at Prince Castle and get a burger, fries and coke for 26 cents. It was fun.
I was a 25 year resident of Rockford until last year. Yes, jobs have disapeared, taxes are high, there are bad neighbarhoods and crime is a problem. No, Rockford is nowhere near the worst in the USA. There are nice golf courses, nice State Park, clean air, decent water, plenty shopping and restaurants, near NW Chicago and Madison for jobs and entertainment.
I have lived on the Northwest side of Rockford for 55 yrs. The last "INCIDENT" that the police was called was a stolen bike 30 yrs. ago. All cities have their bad side. Why don't you show the better more affluent areas?
The problem is that most of Rockford is "the bad side". It isn't just the urban decay either; in my experience the overall culture is toxic and unhealthy. When you live somewhere that the majority of residents don't even want to be at, you can really feel it.

My family moved to Rockford in 2014-2015. The area we live in is bad but we keep to ourself and we're friendly so far we've been alright. My ticket out of there coincided with my choice to join the Army in 18. Im stationed in Georgia and honestly seeing how other states operate has me deadset on staying away from Rockford and even Illinois when my contract is done. Its a shame to look at the history of Rockford and see what it is now.
I'm sorry your Rockford experience was disappointing. But the neighborhood you show us in the video looks remarkably free of the drug culture you are eager -- rightly ---to excoriate. It's clear that Rockford government actually did something in the face of a huge problem. Kudos to the city for that.
I just moved from the dangerous parts of Chicago to Rockford . They don't seem that bad compare to the city, it's dry out here and I moved to this town less than a month and they aren't nothing like Chicago.🤣
I was raised in Rockford in the 1970s-80s was safe i loved it back then but now its very bad Wish I could go back then when Rockford was a great place to live.
grew up in rockford in the 60s. Played basketball on West Rockford team, had many classmates from South- Side, was friendly with them. Knew THEN how bad things were, first time I came to town (1959) went to Fairgrounds Park, on the cusp between decent and in need of repair neighborhoods. Then went to east side of town and things were relatively hunky, dory;. so, the problems that have placed Rockford now in the worst most dangerous category were not as evident then, but the underpinning of rot was present, but those with power really didn't care. As long as the industrial factories, Rockford was in the 50s the home to among the most successful tool and die making in the US, were successful, with plenty of jobs for the down to earth (caucasian and some blacks ) working class, things were (sort of) working. Once the rest of the world undercut prices, the gloalization and de capitalization of the Midwest of the US taking place, things went downhill. Without work, the area is left for the scavengers, and druggies, as those coming later, as in this video, are commenting. Sure, corruption became rampant. Democrats were in power state wise but, at least in the 60's, it was the Republicans who locally turned a blind eye. Plenty of blame to go around. Trumpy was going to fix all this stuff, course, these problems are not easy to fix, especially when all the globalization that has taken place, has cut the heart out of the economy of SO MUCH of the Midwest and other areas. Corona virus impact? Cant be good, but maybe over time something will come positive re change. I moved to Green Bay in the 1970.s, then my wife had a job in BC, (Canada), Vancouver area, and we moved. Still have many friends in Rockford...they lament as I do. But many of them are there for the long haul..come hell (which there has been much) or high water...which has also visited! My heart is heavy for what Rockford has become, but the issues, underpinning, lack of fair housing, jobs for more poor, and the rampant corruption that has fanned the flames, were all there, or coming , in the 60's as well.

I grew up on Andrews St. My parents moved us out of that rough neighborhood to North Rockton ave. My 1st job was a community center on Avon which is a few steps away from the fairgrounds projects. I've spend a large part of my life helping kids learn how to read and use computers, helping them with homework and teaching them conflict resolution. Jobs like that didn't pay enough so I had to move on from it so I can earn a living. But I really miss the work, giving back and serving my community. After I graduate from NIU I'll most definitely get back to that work.
I was born here in Rockford and back in the early 90's me and my dad lived on a street across from the Farm n Fleet next to the golf course on West State St and when my car was not running and I had to use a bicycle to get to the other side of town when I was riding down West State St it was a real run for your life situation because by the time I had peddled my bicycle away from the blacks who gave chase I'd have a few more blacks trying to pull me off my bicycle as I rode by and back then it was a life threatening situation to be white and on the west side back then.

Good sir, I'm sure I remember you, the neighborhood was bad I give it that and I still live on that block, after the houses were tore down and people moved out others movies in, blaisdell isn't the nicest but that street knows some piece as a majority of people are nice and quiet, not much I can say for the surrounding area, I've noticed a slight change as well since the downtown police department split into 3 and ones Is down Avon, I hope rockford gets better in general I've been on blaisdell all 18 years of my life and will be for a couple more, I hate seeing my hometown in the condition it's in
At 37 with the black car in the White House that used to be my house and I'm only 11 but in the video I still live there that black car was mine
Born and raised on kishwaukee street, was born into the LC's (Latin counts) till my brother got killed then I was forced to move because I was getting more and more into bad and stupid shit so my family moved and yeah🤷🏽♂️
I used to live here some years back, I was young so I don't remember much but I lived on olive street. My mom said their were drug addicts everywhere though lol
I used to live over there on 18th. Every night was gun fights down the ally.
Yep
I used to live on Blaisdell & Independence in the early 90's. I know exactly what you're saying.
I sure wish I could delegate where my tax dollars are spent. I guess I should attend more City Council Meetings!
Born in and raised in that crappy neighborhood. And let`s no forget all the male incest going on. Most my friends were victim`s from it and never were the same. That was about the time John Wayne Gacy was venturing into Rockford and my class at Swan Hillman found a young kid hanging in an outhouse on a field trip..
I'm in Rockford right now. It doesn't seem that bad at all. Ive lived in Atlantic City, and right outside Camden, nj though..
This comment didnt age well. 35 homicides in 2020
I've lived here in rockford area for 16 years now I work right down the street it's not as bad as most people are saying in the comments Houston is way worse lol

The heat brings out the wild...
I grew up about 30 miles west from rockford and 11 miles east of freeport. I moved into freeport about 25 years ago. Freeport has become the cooling off place for rockford and chicago. My husband and I used to go to rockford for our 'date night' , but there is no safe area of Rockford now. Freeport has gotten bad too. Its a shame really.
As a citizen of Rockford. It really isn’t that bad. But that’s easy for us to say. We don’t have sketchy people and a detective a couple houses away
I live in Illinois and this is very terrifying for me 😢😨💔 God give me strength 💙🙏💙 thanks for sharing 💗🌹💓
You don’t know shit Rockford ain’t nothing 8m form the projects I’m from the city
A little dramatic, Mary
i live here on the west side its who u know and who u hang out with.
He mad cuz they fuckn his house up lol. Sad
Exactly. Keep your nose in your own business and you'll be aight.
chris brown not really nigga especially as a teen young adult everyone in my class has done esctasy smoked blunts sold shit it tuff out here
Yep
It's crazy how so many responses are like keep your head down and dont fuck with the wrong crowd. Likes that's how you know shit is messed up. Life doesn't have to be like that. I know I've been running from the ghettos cause crime/poverty travels
Those are such big and beautiful homes!! That is just sad that an entire neighborhood has been decimated.
Thanks for this video. Back in the 80s i was taken away from my parents and adopted out. I thank God right now. I was really young and only have small memories of Rockford. I almost took a trip thhere from Kansas City Mo and was going to move back to find my dads home but i have decided against it after this video. God I might grown up very poor or a drug addict if i grew up there. I never knew howbad it was till i watched this video. God let something bad happen because heknew years lateri would be in a better place! I cant thank u enough! It closed the door for me on years of childhood questions. Btw you actuallly passed by an old house i was taken away from . God that was healing! Thank you so much!
Amen.
I lived there 15 yrs. just moved to Indiana. Rockford is a poor dangerous place to live.ill never live there again
I am going to Rockford in About 3 weeks to meet my step grandma she just had heart Surgery
Can't be more dangerous than Detroit.
The eastern area around the Swedish-American restaurant and hospital near Cherry Valley are nice. Never bothered driving toward the west or north side. When all the properties turn into 100+ year old rehab jobs selling for 30k or less, you know it's a bad area.
That is a bad street and it sucks for me a voucher holder because people like that give a person like me a bad name and make it hard for me to get into something nice for me and my children.. But I'll be off of it soon. I am owning my own
Nothing wrong with people who need help. But the powers that be would rather people never escape. It is very profitable for their political purpose. I hope when you get on your feet, you find your niche and make a good living. This corruption costs people struggling the worst. There is little compassion for how people like you have to struggle. And then you the top people, gaming the system for profit. Good luck, Ms. Woodard. You will succeed!
I lived in Machesney park, my mom owned a candy shop in Downtown Rockford where my mom couldn’t take care of us and work so we would have beds behind the register and sleep and I would ride my tricycle around and mop the floors. That’s was in kindergarten and up till second grade where we moved to a swap meet. Interesting video .
Lemme guess. This was the 90s
I'm so glad I got out. Been living in Boston since December 2018, and I haven't been back to the Rockford area since. Good riddance.
Good for you. Have a great life in a good place, rather than the shithole of Rockford!
@@jonbystrom9410 Thanks. I talked with a buddy who also escaped, and we agreed that it feels like making up for lost time. Also that neither of us realized how bad it really was until we left it.
I was born in Swedish American and lived in the area for the first 27 years of my life; now that I'm out, I realize the world is so much bigger than what Rockford made it feel like. It's a wonderful thing.
Best wishes man.
@@spaceonisorceress4406 congrats!! I cannot wait to escape too. I'd never want to raise a family there.
Hey Jon, What Street is That? I am Looking for Houses.
Blaisdell St.
For more horror stories please see rockfordfraud.wordpress.com.
The Generation of people in there 60's always, for some reason, they think everything is funny?
This dude seems really simple minded. And these neighborhoods don’t even look slummy.
I went to the Sec of State office on Auburn and afterwards i went next to the dollar store and as i was walking out, there was a shooting im the parking lot.
Rockford Motto: "Daily shootings will continue until morale improves."
What street did this video start on so I can check this neighborhood for myself. I sure will make damn sure I bring some popcorn with me!
Blaisdell and School Streets.
let me know when you slide thru
I’m from Rockford I was raised on the west side if u don’t know don’t say shit but if u do u know wassup with us 💯💯
Im from sablewood. 😂
my mom owned carols ribs n things on the corner of w state street and s independence....as a lil kid i used to see all the shit that went down over there.
Ohio New York and Illinois are all alike
Yup. All run by criminals.
That's brazy I was just out there last year wouldn't of never thought it was dangerous
It's not as bad as it was 10 years ago. Alot of good people live there. The drug trafficking is done by the bankers' politicians, cops, judges & lawyers. The Democrat Machine.
@@jonbystrom9410 iam like when I slid through Rockford it was Bool no issues no nothing
@@jonbystrom9410 very true!!! Jon are you still there? I cannot wait to get out. I was in DeKalb to finish college and reluctant to go back home. My mom told me how crazy it's getting with looting and robberies. I was so surprised to hear you say the politicians were involved with selling dope as well. Gosh things were so peaceful when I was little there in the early 90s.
I was born there stay until I was 2 years old i was raise in opelika,Alabama still here
Thank God you escaped! Illinois is a sinking ship. Too much corruption in politics and their police henchmen. Stay awake!
So sad had good and memories when I was younger
This is the destruction of the Mormon Mafia. ruclips.net/video/fdSrUGr_tz8/видео.html
I stay in Rockford it sure aint that bad. Ive seen alot worse.
Can I ask what you've seen worse except for Chicago
Aurora Illinois, Springfield Illinois, Miami Florida, LA, Bronx. Rockford ain’t shit just filled with bullshit.
I live in Rockford Illinois I have lived here my whole life 42 years it use to be a great place to live 30 years ago now it has turned to a sh*t hole.
If you ever need anyone to help work on some of your properties I would love the work & would love to help you fight against the corruption here in town I’m a life long Republican who is tired of seeing this town go to crap. Keep up the fight.
I used to live in sterling. And walk a few. Blocks away was this Rockford. Illinois near the river were I fished. Didn’t know that was ghetto
Welcome to Rockford if City doesn't get your money the state of Illinois will.
Illinois is a criminal enterprise. rockfordfraud.wordpress.com
Rockford sucks, it’s terrible, it all went to shit when people living out of bad parts of Chicago moved here and then live in the projects
lol, I live in this area this video is a joke.
Those homes are worth 2M in LA and 4M in San Francisco
Yup. Real-estate agents won't list any properties on this street and banks won't loan mortgages. The former mayor's brother ran the "Black Gangster Disciples" and sold cocaine from his house, across the street.
@@jonbystrom9410 how do u just say this shit without proof ? I’m not doubting it but man you’re walking a fine line my friend
Boi I live in a nice part of Illinois but it's really close to Rockford
Poplar grove?
Rockford is NOT the “most dangerous city in America” It was voted “most dangerous city of its size” ONCE. Try Gary. Go to Detroit and walk around…I was never once afraid to walk the streets as an adult in Rockford
I love Rockford! 💕
You are funny and crazy! Why do you love Rockford????!?
I was riding to Rockford and I heard that someone shot like 3 people lol
I grew up on Andrews St. My parents moved us out of that rough neighborhood to North Rockton ave. My 1st job was a community center on Avon which is a few steps away from the fairgrounds projects. I've spend a large part of my life helping kids learn how to read and use computers, helping them with homework and teaching them conflict resolution. Jobs like that didn't pay enough so I had to move on from it so I can earn a living. But I really miss the work, giving back and serving my community. After I graduate from NIU I'll most definitely get back to that work.
Rockford is targeted because of all the good people. The corrupt politicians have to keep good people down.
I had to watch it again. And thinking about where this might have been filmed. It could be anywhere in Rockford!
I mean. Rockford is pretty crappy, but it's not the worst in the entire country.
Well that's because you live in the bad sides.if you move to the better places well you wouldn't have to deal with this.
Ikr
Do you live in rockford ? No ? Then youd know all of rockford is the bad side, that shit is everywhere around here even on the "nice sides"
And if you do live in rockford, then please elaborate
What are the nice sides?
Shi fuk if I know, ask big chungus
Rockford am I right
Correct!
To me Rockford is more peaceful then little village
I was born here in Rockford and back in the early 90's me and my dad lived on a street across from the Farm n Fleet next to the golf course on West State St and when my car was not running and I had to use a bicycle to get to the other side of town when I was riding down West State St it was a real run for your life situation because by the time I had peddled my bicycle away from the blacks who gave chase I'd have a few more blacks trying to pull me off my bicycle as I rode by and back then it was a life threatening situation to be white and on the west side back then.
Ryan Clay naw nigha I live onna west side n I’m white I get along with every nigha on my block
Truth is it sounds like every city in America.
Exactly!
It's very true.Dont slam one place when it's going on everywhere! Every small town and big city.Drugs are all over the entire world.Alcohol is the easiest drug ever to buy!Fact.People live in a pretend world closing their eyes or skirting around a town to avoid such areas.unbeleivable.People are going to do what they want to do.Have a good day.Fyi I dont use.Its none of my business who does and who dont until you start problems with me for no reason.Just part of the facts of life. You cant run from where you live you have to just get it togeather and know what you want out of life.
I'm from Rockford Illinois. Move to Milwaukee in 1985
Hey, I just came back from my home town. Rockford Illinois. I had a good time. Seen my family & my big brother that still live There. My aunt Winnie has a big beautiful home I haven't been there since I was about 20 years old.😊💖
@@lisamaxie9909 so u moved from one shit hole to another lol
Did u pass Webster Ave? Cuz I think thats the worst street. Alot of crimes happen around there every day. I used to live on that street
Yeah.
The city is not all bad. The east side has great neighborhoods that are safe and wonderful schools. The east side gets all the bad rap from the horrible west side. It's a shame.
My friends from here where talking about how are school is nothing and they where from here I now believe them
I am about to buy a house in Rockford but I do my homework 1st. That neighborhood you did a video on no need to do homework on at first sight I would have done a U-turn.
I was deceived.
