Pete Townshend wrote this due to how disgusted he was with himself pulling all night benders and passing out in gutters on the street. That is his description of this song.

It was written cause Pete left that bar and passed out in a random doorway in Soho (a part of London). A policeman recognized him ("A policeman knew my name") and being kind, woke him and told him, "You can go sleep at home tonight (instead of a jail cell), if you can get up and walk away." Pete's response: "Who the f--k are you?"

I once heard a story about how Kieth became Whos' drummer.
Apparently he attended a band rehearsal, heard how their drummer was playin & said,
"I can do better that that guy!"
Sat down on the kit & the rest is history.
      IDK, that's what I heard!

You’re right, it is epic. And this was back in 1978, Pete Townshend was basically inventing all those synth sounds on the spot, in the studio. Back then ‘sounds’ didn’t exist until you figured out how to make them..., they weren’t in some computer database. Good reaction to a truly great song.

The original Who ( vocalist Roger Daltrey, guitarist Pete Townshend, bassist John Entwistle & drummer Keith Moon) were the best version of the band... The Who in the 60's was a r&b band which cranked out basic guitar/ bass/ drums rock... In the 70's, they incorporated modern technology that included keyboards, strings, loops, samples, etc... and became a monumental musical force. Tragically, this record in 1978 was the last before the death of drummer Keith Moon.
The Who carried on as a trio w/ session players... recorded 2 more albums - 'Face dances' (1981) and "It's hard" (1982), but the band was declining in popularity... so they decided to part ways in the 80's. However, they kept reuniting in the 90's to tour or play shows from demand. The Who played a prolific set post 9/11 for the Concert for New York City in 2001... It was bassist John Entwistle's final concert. He passed away in 2002 just as The Who were about to tour again.
With The Who just a duo (Daltrey & Townshend) w/ session players, they released 2 more studio albums - 'Endless wire' (2006) and 'Who' (2019)... and still tour today.

That particular F bomb somehow stayed in the song throughout my entire childhood of hearing the song on the radio late ‘70s through the ‘80s & early ‘90s. I always questioned it though because I couldn’t fathom it getting through. This song is a real crowd pleaser when they do it live. Max audience participation. Sadly, Keith Moon passed shortly after this record was released. Kenny Jones from Faces/Small Faces came on as drummer and the band soldiered on. IMO, they should have retired after the Ox passed away because he was such a huge part of their sound too and the band isn't the same without Moon and Entwistle.

Hey Biz, I've got a couple new songs for you based on how awesome the ending is. Climatic! Evanescence, "whisper" ends in a crazy Latin chant, and The Moody Blues "nights in White satin" you have to load the right one because there are 2 versions. So I would say the longest version. It end with a Shakespeare poem followed by a loud Gong! Amazing it was a hit 3 different times around the world.

I think this is in a CSI crime show too along with You won't get fooled again. I love the line, "who the f...K are you" 😁

Yes, it is. All of the CSI shows had theme songs by The Who.
      They are;
CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2000-2015)=“Who Are You”
CSI: Miami (2000-2012)=“Won’t Get Fooled Again”
      CSI: NY (2004-2013)=“Baba O’Riley”
CSI: Cyber (2015-2016)=“I Can See For Miles”
      CSI: Vegas (2021-)=“Who Are You”

As far as Who songs go, this is pretty low on my list. I felt like he justed wanted to use the word "who" to be catchy or something. I don't know. Having said that, Pete Townshend stands head and shoulders above most guitarist/composers. His songwriting is stellar.

I have this album and the LP is red instead of the usual black vinyl. I don't know if they were all red.
