I’ll go camping when it’s 30 to 40 below that is the best time because my stoves are too big in our tent. It’s a wonderful time and we’re good to go for at least 14 days.

When I was in the Boy Scouts in Montana (1960s), we would go on one winter camping adventure each year so the new kids could earn their Polar Bear Patch. The coldest I remember it being was -22F. We used canvas wall tents with no floor and no stove. We would heat rocks next to the fire and then place them in the foot of our sleeping bags to keep us warm. We also used "original" space blankets for ground cloths under our sleeping bags. We slept in wool/cotton blend long johns and wore wool socks and stocking hats while in the sleeping bags. Fun times...thanks for the memories!

So here's a little tip for your tent steak that pulled out. Use what I call a "dead man's " steak. Use two or more sticks bound together in a crosswise configuration. Dig a deep hole in the snow ( this works in sand also) with a rope attached. Bury those sticks with the lead rope out of the snow. Pack it down. Now secure your tent line to the rope sticking out of the snow. Now you're good to go. Have a great day. 🌞

A needle!! Has an eye but cannot see. Good video, I am kind of glad you did not pull out a whole bunch of stuff to make a gourmet meal! Sorry that the freeze dried stuff did a boomerang though🤢. I love the pups enthusiasm running in the snow, and the playfulness, he must have wanted a marsh mellow for grabbing your pillow. My friend and I did a little fishing last week, we had gotten those one person shelters, enough room to sit inside, and used small space heaters to keep warm. A word of caution though, not a good idea to bring Beanie-Weenies! The after effects are like a gas chamber in prison!😂 We did feast on fresh caught Salmon though. Will be watching more of you!

At your 2:33 timed your eye should be one to tighten it up with that one knot to give half a twist to then pull rope from your long end back though and then to use that as a mechanical advantage to tighten the rope up. sorry i have for got the name, loggers hitch is it?? .
works well , always have rope lengths longer then is needed!!!

Done that a few times as one of a group of troop leaders who brought a troop of boy scouts to winter camp on Grande Island in Lake Superior, in February. They made snow shelters and camped for three days. No facilities whatsoever.... just what we carried and dragged across the ice from Munising. Afterward, they earned their 'Polar Bear Award." Great fun, a great experience.... and no mosquitoes! No woodstove or other supplemental heat... just gasoline backpack single burner camp stoves to melt snow for water and to heat food.

Love it! Missed Joelle on this one, but it was mighty cold. Stove seemed to work just great even in the extreme cold. You're probably better off bringing an easy meal to prepare instead of that freeze dried stuff, but I get not having to haul the gear and food etc. Maybe just chili that you already prepared at home. How do you not have more subscribers?

I have camped in temperatures lower than -33 F without a stove. I didn't enjoy it, it was very cold and I spent most of my time trying to stay warm, which meant being in a sleeping bag for long hours. I was also tent camping and had lots of problems with the tent laying on my face after a bad snowstorm. If I had had a 4 season tent those problems would have been less, but the cold would have still been the issue. My bag was rated for -10 F, but I had to sleep with long johns, two pairs of socks, a neck gaiter, wool camp and a jacket to be warm enough to sleep. Needless to say, that was my first and last time camping below zero F.

Depends on what kind of sleeping bag you have, but in my experience from a whole bunch of FDF winter survival training/fieldcraft, sleeping in more clothing than just boxers, some socks and maybe a wool cap (or equiv.) on your head is actually pretty counterproductive. A lot of instructors say you just end up sweating inside the bag, and the moisture just makes you feel colder. Then again there's almost always been 8-10 guys in the same tent running fire watch all night to keep the temperature pretty even so maybe it's different when it's a solo trip.
But if you have a good winter sleeping bag that works in very low temperatures, consider trying just socks, boxers, and if you want to poke your head out of the bag, a hat.
