Nice Ozziefan. My debut at a ground was not until I was 15 when I watched days 2,3 and 4 at Gabba versus kiwis in November 1987. Boonie scored an excellent ton on day 2 and Australia won by 9 wickets shortly before tea on day 4.
Me too. Just great memories. Wonderful. When Lara got going it was all over. We walked away thinking West Indies had bet on Australia. Remember. That last ball would have gone for six with the bats and the advent of boundary ropes these days. It's not all about 4s and sixes, boys and girls. Fast bowlers making batsmen nervous is where its at for me.
Batting was lot more difficult those days , the quality of the bats were nothing compared to todays bats, add to it the length of the boundaries it was very difficult to make big scores. Sixers were very few , may be one or two in the entire match. These days batting has become lot easier with high quality bats and shorter boundaries . Mark waugh , tendulkar , lara may be have scored 8-12 hundreds each in the 90s , but they are equal in effort to kohli , amla scoring 30 hundreds in todays ODI cricket.
At one point Martyn lost his spot in the West Australian side midway through the 1990s when he was leading a life style that wasn't conducive to playing sober cricket. Copping the blame for Australia's dismal loss to South Africa in Sydney early Jan 1994 really scarred him for quite a few years.
@@soulsphere9242 Hayden's first test was March or April 1994 but he played one dayers the year before and he was on the 1993 Ashes tour. Langer's first game for Australia was late January 1993.
Fwiw Mark was originally picked for the NSW team as an opening bowler instead of his batting. He also bowled a fair bit for Australia when he first got his opportunity. Even opened the bowling in one match when Craig McDermott got injured. The stat's show he was more than a part timer as a medium pace bowler. As a medium pace bowler he averaged around a wicket per a match at test and odi. He averaged 34 with the ball at test level as a medium pacer and 26 at odi. Those numbers compete with genuine all rounders really. Then after back injuries he converted into a less effective part time off spinner.
@@ronaldball9389 Mark Waugh was first picked for NSW as an opening batsman with Mark Taylor. He played the second half of the 1985/86 season as an opening bowler alongside Mike Whitney as NSW picked 3 spinners - Bob Holland, Peter Taylor and Murray Bennett. Mark Waugh is one of only 3 Australian players to achieve the following - Test Century, ODI Century, Test 5-fer and ODI 5-fer. The only other two players are Greg Chappell and Michael Clarke. Mark Waugh was a very good medium pace bowler. Always had a knack of getting good players out. He switched to off spin after the 1995 Windies Tour and didn't take many tickets after that but will note he did get Tendulkar in a World Cup game LOL.
@@soulsphere9242 Steve Waugh was originally a very fine bowler. He survived between 1986-89 on the back of his ability to bowl very well. Allan Border really rated his bowling.
@randOmZ TV Greg Matthews said in a 1986 book that Steve Waugh will end up being a great batsman. I remember thinking come on Matthews. Bill O'Reilly said the same thing as well. Watch the early WSC games. Steve Waugh was the most talented cricketer going around. He had all the shots, all the skills, all the talent. His bowling was so effective. What he lacked in 5km's of pace he made up for it with skill, swing, cut and variations. His batting was just shots galore. It was being out of the Test side over a 15 Test period (bar 2 Tests) that changed his mindset to batting. The 1993 Ashes Tour was Steve Waugh's change for multi talented shot maker to calculated and surviving batsman. Mark Waugh's bowling was always regarded as part-time to his batting but would often open the bowling for NSW if they picked 3-spin attack and even did in a Test when Craig McDermott broke down at Lord's and they had 2 spinners in the side. Mark Waugh's record with medium pace shows he was better than a part-timer and really was a batting all-rounder. Put it this way if the Waugh's were around today we wouldn't be having this 5th bowler obsession search.
Its easy to forget M.Waugh was a useful meduim pacer and middle order batsmen at 5 or 6 in those days. He went from that to being a tidy off spinner and then a consistent one day opener. A great sporting family.
I was at the MCG game when he got a five fa and won the game as a twelve year old ...I'll never forget the whole packed stadium chanting.."mark Waugh's a legend"...which continued all the way back to Belgrave end of the line station with a train packed with cricket fans still chanting!.....wow things have changed !
I remember during that season when the MCG got totally resurfaced that even when you did get the ball off the middle of the bat a lot of the time it wasn't reaching the boundary because the infield and the outfield was so slow. Brian Lara probably showed that the best way to reach the boundary in this match was to hit the ball at least 3/4 of the way to the boundary in the air to take the slow infield and outfield out of play.
I went to this game the windies were cruising until junior came on. He dominated that game and fuck were the crowd loud this was when cricket was cricket, no bullshit, no divas, just good old fashioned aussie cricket
I remember it quite well Not only did they have great bowlers but their batsmen were great and their fielding was top notch. Nowadays they can't get any of it right
That crowd is insane. 20 to win with 7 wickets in hand and the crowd is still going for it. Australian crowds aren't like that now, closest I got was in the SCG members in 2010 when Pakistan collapsed. Either that or Mitchell Johnson bowling the last few overs of the day at Michael Carberry
HAHA , i was at this match , still not sure how we won . Was almost 75,000 people there which i would guess was the biggest one day crowd for a long time in Melbourne . Remember Mark Waugh talking about the noise of the crowd chanting his name when he bowled. Also reckon it was during this series that they stopped serving beer in cans or stopped serving heavy beer .
This was a prelude to the 1996 world cup semi final finish between these same two teams ... in the post match presentation Richie Richardson lamented to Tony Grieg "We really messed it up" which could easily be talking about so many of my own winning positions on chess.com.
Yes. Steve Waugh was a very good bowler. In this game the Waugh's bowled the death overs. Steve was a noted death bowler back in the days. A very good bowler early in his career before he virtually shelved his bowling and all the shots he used to have when batting to focus on the Test batsman he finished up as. Mark was brought on out of desperation to take a wicket he ended up taking 5 plus a run out. Mark normally bowled when one of the first 5 wasn't going well or injured during the game or they badly needed a break through wicket.
I recall when the MCG looked like this. It was bloody awful as were most grounds in Australia. Nowadays the fielding surfaces are outstanding and the pitches are tripe.
Playing Indoor cricket helps....thats why kiwis have always been so competitive over the years despite lacking in depth compared to india Pakistan Sri Lanka australia and other international teams
back when ODIs used to be exciting. the governing bodies have since sold out. they would rather see flat pitches, shorter boundaries and teams scoring 300+ the ODIs have gone to the sh*tter.
Agreed….The meat in those old bats was equivalent to the splice or toe of today’s bats. Any hit over 65 metres with those old bats were considered to be “magnificent” or “marvellous” shots back in those old days.
Really...7 wkts down like dominoes? Either complete fools or complete crooks. Even singles guided down to 3rd man would have been enough. Look at some of the shots atherton played! Blind slogs, ariel shots all over the park ...when it was not needed. Top order did their thing but really they should have won this match with their eyes closed. Pakistan did it in the previous match so it must be the same bookie.
Proud to say i was at this game! a 7 year old. First game I saw live
Nice mate!

How good was Mark Waugh and ODI cricket in the early 90's. Those kits are awesome too.

I think the outfields are also much faster now. We never see 4 all run anymore, like we saw in this match. Big, slow grounds.
Pitches were way tougher as well
Kohli > Sachin
Man I always forget how long Damien Martyn was around for before his career really took off.

Mark Waugh was a phenomenal talent. My favourite cricketer. Don't care what the stats say, he was a gun.
Absolutely right bro
Even stats say ye was an excellent all round cricketer.

When I started following cricket in mid 90s, Mark Waugh would be bowling offies.. With his glasses on
I dont what was better the cool, languid performance of Mark Waugh or Bills mercurial commentary!!!!
A result like this is exactly what the fans want.

Great game though. So often you see highlights, but never see the finish. This is why we love cricket. The Mark war stuff was just bonus.
When cricket was fun to watch.
That is Steve Waugh bowling at the end though

When Jones used to be in team and Mark Waugh used to bat in middle order plus used to bowl medium fast hehe.
This was MCG in 92 & now it's not the same. Corona has changed everything. 😥😥😥
Mark Waugh and Keith Artherton won the match for Australia
I remember being at this game.

Bill Lawry - the legend.
Bill Lawry going off his chops @ 10:51. Aaah....brings back memories.
Whipil it back. Miss you dean

Wonderful crowd and support in Australia. Sounded like a mini India Pakistan match
what a commentator "Bill Lawry"
This match a replica of things to come in the next world cup which unfortunately was the semis for the West Indies liking.
The highlight for me was Steve Waugh arguing with the umpire, fuming he didn't get Arthurton LBW when Ambrose got run out.
i love bill lawry

The pitches those days use to offer help to bowlers in odi
I didn't know Mark Waugh bowled medium pace. I only remember him wearing Hollywood star-like Coolers and bowling off spin
