Not fair! Now you revived my fantasy on building a side firing speaker with a quite spectacular design. Only problem, I don't have the time nor the money - and have never built a complete speaker before! 😅
I was really wondering what that side fire subwoofer would do, I'm disappointed that you almost never do an audio test after. Nevertheless, great build.
Nice build, for aesthetics you can use black anodized screws with a unique key pattern for the solid wood front applications. Would look very professional
i really enjoy your channel. the hard part for me is getting a sense of sound quality in ALL speaker reviews. i realize sound quality is very subjective, but is there any way to compare to an off-the-shelf speaker for your review of sound quality? sound quality seems very personal, so it would be nice to compare to readily available equip stocked at common retailers as a reference point.
Beautiful work. This is my all time favorite design. I'm gonna use this design with 61/2 inch TB subwoofers in a multi chamber design. The bottom part for the woofer is either gonna be a T-Line type or band pass chamber like Bose Acoustimas. The full range driver with be the Dayton Audio PS 95 copper phase plug ( full range driver) and a Fountek ribbon tweeter with the appropriate bass blocker. I will just run the full range driver and subwoofer straight. Not sure if I will put a 80 Hz bass blocker on the full range driver or not. Trial and error I guess
Great looking build! I would love to know how you set up the crossover....can you send a pic/or describe the crossover?(I assume there is a crossover). If not, how is it wired?
Tnx for showing, keep up going! For the one‘s who wanted to see the separate compartments, look at 2:53, lines are drawn on the wood, and I think to indicate the place of the upper compartment... for me this is not important I am going to put the case in practise as an example for all the teachings - tnx Kirby - and design the case from the ground up. The same for the electronics inside.
Very nice. I saw a similar type front piece on a sub build and they put a thin layer of cork between the box and the front plate. Looked very nice and reduced potential vibrations
, my home speakers are made this way. they are Theater Research. they have two 4 inch mid ranges and a one inch dome on the front and a 10 inch side fire woofer. they are 3 1/2 feet tall and about 14 inches deep by 6 inches wide this configuration works well. I'm gonna build these little speakers for my laptop computer. I have an SMSL small t amp that's 20 wpc / RMS. it should sound good. keep up the good work.
Woohhhoooo.... Got a nice RUclips notification before sleep. Finally I can sleep well now. And I had that speaker box but a little bit smaller, i will put my 6" woofer

Hey Kirby, i really enjoy your woodworking. You definitely have some talent there. Are these the towers you mentioned a couple of videos ago? I was hoping to see a much larger 3-way floor standing pair. Maybe they're still under construction?
Eric H , I agree, I would like to see a larger floor model made. I currently have a store bought set with side fire 10 inch woofers, two 4 inch front mids, and a one inch dome tweeter on the front, 3 1/2 feet tall. they sound incredible.
Did you put a woofer on each one or just a single? I think it would've looked a little slicker without the brass screws... But maybe some sort of copper fastener to play off the cone?!
very nice Kirby, i would love to see what the crossover was for this. I loved the look of the boenicke W5 and these look like a more affordable solution to them :) Will these running of an internal or external amp? Keep up the good work!
It’s a tricky compromise you’ve made with this design. I tried to design something similar but there is simply no way you can get the woofer low enough on a speaker that size to negate the issue of directivity. I’d like to see the crossover!

Hi Kerby! I intend to build a 2 way speaker box a pair of Seas woofers and tweeters I bought sometime ago. I am a complete newbie and don't understand all the theory and technical aspects of speaker box dimensions for the woofers and tweeters I have. Can you help with the dimensions needed to build a set of 2 ways?
Hope you answer cos I've been looking everywhere for a definitive answer. But how do you cut recesses for flush speaker mounts? What bit should one use on the router?
Do you think the duo build or the side fire build you did would be better for a record player in a midsize room? Trying to incorporate one of your builds into a full record cabinet build. I just can't find your plans for either of those builds.
Hi, I have been looking to well, make my own set off speakers, I don't have any experience with woodworking but I have a 3D-printer. Will the potentially hollow plastic ruin the sound? I am not a real audiophile, I just like a decent amount of bass and I don't mind colouring. Oh and could you in a future video explain more about the internals of a speaker, I still don't fully understand it and that's why I'm too hessistant about starting. Sorry for any bad sentences, I am not a native English speaker.
Is the woofer sharing the same enclosure as the speaker? If yes wouldn’t they counter each other causing loss of quality? Other than that they look beautiful and unique.

Hey kirby, what about the inside design? Is it ported? T-Line? Or sealed? I think a separate t line type design would have been good for the woofer with a separate chamber for the ps95 full range speaker. No crossover needed correct ? Polyfil ?
It look nice but I doubt that it's the best solution - what about phase shift and directivity ? It can work with (sub) woofers, but in this case x-over frequency is too high. Tweeter and woofer are in different distance from listener. They should be close to each other and in the same distance to avoid time/phase shift and interferencies in overlaping gfrekvencies area.
Hello Sir. I like your videos and how you explain them. I have a question. Sometimes I find woofers(30-100watts) which do not have any data without impedence and wattage. Is it possible to design a suitable vented enclosure for them so can sound close to their original enclosure?
0:57 starting this because I am so curious where you're going to cut off the sub and how you're going to keep its enclosure separate from the top. Also from your last review of the build of the little 3.5s, I myself had though of pairing with a bass and letting the smalls be essentially mid and tweeter.
7:19 I'm guessing you were able to keep them in the same box non-separated because the waves from the side-firing at 90 degrees will not have significant impact on the front-firing, since they are crossing each other? As opposed to both front-firing where the air from the back of the sub would push-pull the back of the smaller driver.
i recenly just finished my subwoofer box , and its sound great, and the box abit too overkill for 10" subwoofer, using ported box at 68lts and tuned to 25hz, for 10" subwoofer its probably too much xD, maybe gonna upgrade the subwoofer to 12"
Looks nice, but there should really be a separate enclosure for the midrange speaker. Shouldn't be that difficult to add on to the existing build - just find a plastic tub or cup that's large enough to fit behind the mid, insert it into the enclosure through the hole you made for the woofer, and fasten it in place (glue, etc) behind the midrange. Add damping material in it for better results.
what did you use for paint on the MDF? a matte grey or some form of chalk paint? looks pretty sweet with the contrast of the hard wood fascia. I've wanted to do a fast crossover, but don't have the skills yet.
