Great video! I want to echo what you are saying about the warm welcome that US people receive in Nicaragua. I got the opportunity this year to go with a delegation of internationalists to the vigilias in Managua on the 18th and the main celebration in the Plaza on the 19th. What a tremendous welcome we received. In Batahola the night before, and coming into the Plaza on the 19th, the Juventud Sandinista were in columns on either side singing and applauding as we walked in. Really a beautiful expression of welcome in every way. It was electric.

Excellent. Really enjoyed your description of the historical background and relating it to the USA history. Well done. A really precious episode.

Watched the march on Nicaragua360. It shows how proud the people are of their accomplishments and they look like they are having a great time.

    Super interesting and informative! Thanks!
I guess I was wrongly under the impression that foreigners weren't to take part in political rallies and events. Cool that the police let you ride with them. The vantage point and camera angle were great.

Well that is true. But you have to look at the rule carefully. There are two components.
      1) You can't be "involved", but you can observe. So like in a cultural, educational (learning for yourself), or journalistic capacity it is totally allowed. So for example, if I'm filming for the channel, I could attend any political activity - as long as I'm observing or reporting on it, but not to like speak or "get involved." I can't exert any kind of opinion or interference. So as a foreigner, think of it like a "press pass."
      2) It applies to politics. A march in memory of the fight for independence isn't political. That would be akin to saying foreigners in America can't attend picnics for memorial day or veterans day. Of course they can, they are more than welcome. And it isn't political. No matter what your politics, the "freedom" and human rights of the people is something to celebrate. It doesn't matter what side of the political spectrum a Nicaraguan is on, being sovereign versus being colonized by an outside power isn't about politics, it's about freedom. So a foreigner is totally allowed to be happy for and celebrate Nicaraguan culture, history, sovereignty or freedom.
Events like this foreigners are asked to be respectful, of course, but that's always the case. But even Americans are very much invited to learn the history and celebrated Nicaraguan freedom. I'll be at the 4519 tonight. I get a lot of hugs from strangers when they find that I'm American and attending. It means a lot to a lot of people that there are foreigners who care enough to celebrate with them and look past the foreign propaganda.
While there, you saw loads of red and black (flags, clothes, scarves, hats, banners, etc.) As a foreigner, I can't wear or wave those. That's political. I could ARGUE that it isn't, and maybe get off with a one time warning, but it's realistically political. Marcela, that I was with, said the FSLN new style hats were good and I should get one. But I said that I couldn't legally wear it and she had no idea that that was the law. That's what a lot of people don't realize - Americans are told that you "can't speak out against the government", but that is NOT the law. The law is that I can't get political, so I can't promote any party or ideology - current government or not. I can't promote the opposition (that's what the US like to frame it as) and they conveniently "suggest" that I CAN support the current regime. But that is false. I am not allowed to promote the current government either. It's equal. I'm an outsider, I can't take sides or voice an opinion. So even though the FSLN is strongly in power, I'm not supposed to go out choosing them or voicing an opinion about them. But Americans like to say that the Nicaraguan flag is not allowed. But you can see in the video that it is everywhere AND the law completely allows me to wear Nica colours, fly the flag, etc.

You placed the dictators in Nicaragua. You trained somoza’s military (Escuela de las Americas) to butcher our people. We had a revolution because the people had enough of gringo interference. Moreover, your Ronald Reagan was dealing with Dru** in Nicaragua. You also placed land mines all over our country side.
A far as we see it, you are as guilty as your politicians.
Don’t talk about politics if you don’t want people to remind you of your sins.
