So this is a kind of project I've wanted to do for a while - a proper video essay! And why not keep it classy with a topic all about fart jokes. In movies, on the internet, in all forms. Which are good, which are bad, and which one is deemed to be the best? As someone who specifically dislikes toilet humour, and rolls their eyes as fart jokes in animated movies, will we be able to find a gag that we can appreciate? Or is it all to be lost on cheap laughs and unfunny farts? Come join us on our journey as we ask: Are Fart Jokes Even Funny? A Video Essay.

There's a difference between a joke involving farts and a fart being treated as a joke on its own.
FACTS
like in captain underpants that 1 fart song. it counts as a fart joke to me instead of just a fart. edit: WHAT THE HELL!? WHY DOES THIS HAVE SO MANY LIKES?!?! THIS IS MY MOST POPULAR COMMENT
To me it works if one of the voice actors accidentally farted so everyone started laughing, and they work it into the movie as a reminder of the fun times. But forced in are just dumb.

The scene from _King of the Hill_ where Hank wanted to listen to the "new generation of music" but ends up listening to toilet sounds is a great example of a fart joke done right.
OMFG! Totally one of the best fart jokes in history xD

@@CheetoHacker1057 Ehhh, not really. It's less "farts" & more dumb low pitched pump like sounds that don't sound energetic at all.
This generation is gonna kill people like Hank
Fart jokes are the jump scares of comedy. Yeah sure they might get you sometimes, but their cheap, easy, and become tiring VERY quickly.
I blame John K. for bringing fart jokes into animation.
Puerile humor will always have its place. The earliest discovered joke was from ancient Sumeria, about a concubine farting in your lap. Is it crude? Hell yes. But iirc, the context of the "joke" is that a concubine is to be presentable and flawless at all times, and her betraying a gross bodily function is unexpected, embarrassing, and thus, kinda funny. I mean, sure I don't expect or need everyone to necessarily "get it", but the fact that our anthropology of comedy literally starts with a fart joke until further notice, means we all have been, and will forever be a bit childish forever on some level. And that is fine.
@@viscountrainbows2857 I didn’t mean that all fart jokes are bad, when I said they’re like jump scares, I meant it more in the way that they can be effective; it’s just the amount of them that becomes a issue, it’s kinda like any other joke, first couple of times it’s funny, but hear it enough and you’re sure to grow tired of it eventually.
@@evanrutledge-sz4yo Yeah I feel ya; I was just speaking my piece aloud cos I'm a 🤓, ha. But overuse of anything will render it tiresome. It's the same with music when all the songs sound the same, and not even effectively. Like if a hardcore band relies entirely too much on samey breakdowns, or a hip hop artist makes every single song in the same flow/tempo; I'm just not fw a whole album to the face of it like that unless they have a formula that somehow works.
just like a fart hehe
I always hate toilet humor, but to be honest, one day I was talking to my mom about some deep emotional problems I've been having and we've been relating and trying to help each other and in the middle of this, I am crying, my dog farts. We both just started laughing. The juxtaposition is what made us laugh, not the fact that he farted.
Exactly- the tonal whiplash is something that can make it funny. Same way as a Mr. Rogers type person suddenly saying "Shit."

My friend's cat once died and we were all being heartbroken about it. Her other cat proceeds to come into her room and let out one of the nastiest farts I've ever smelled. We all ran out of that room laughing our asses off.
It just works well in some odd situations.

Toilet humour is alright in small doses. But if it gets overplayed past the point of being annoying, THEN it's a major issue.
Absolutely. If I learn anything from Spongebob SquarePant's "Ripped Pants", it shows that repeating the same joke all over again means people are getting tired of it to the point of losing its charm on what makes it funny at first.

The best part of the fart joke in Robots is that the street lamp doesn't "pass out" like you said, there is a white chalk outline where he fell as it fades to morning. He died.
That’s so funny though
The only fart joke I thought was funny was in Adventure Time when Finn and Jake were hiding from a bunch of flesh-eating skeletons. Finn whispered to Jake "we gotta be really really quiet" but Jake out of nowhere throughout a big blow, giving away their hiding spot. Finn look at him "Jake" and he said "I thought it would be funny!"

I think some of the jokes in Shrek deserve more credit, not for being laugh-out loud funny, but for contributing to character development. I feel like a fart can be used in a joke if the fart is not the only punchline. I watched the movie "Robots" recently, and one of the dumbest jokes in the movie was when all the characters were doing armpit farts for some reason. Then another character lets loose a real fart that everyone gags too. The joke was quickly followed up with someone outside falling over before we get a time skip to the morning. The guy that fell over the night before was replaced with a detective outline, which i found hilarious. The fart wasn't funny, but the police outline wouldn't have been as funny as it was without it
The fart with reverb is basically the only kind of fart joke I find funny... And its less because of the fart itself and more to do with the ridiculousness of the reverb.
As someone who is generally pretty unimpressed with toilet humor, the best fart joke I’ve ever seen was actually a meme video. It genuinely made me laugh, loudly, and to this day it never fails to make me cackle, something no other fart joke I can think of has made me do.

I think the Captain Underpants underpants movie has the single best utilization of this mostly atrocious type of humor. Does it overuse it? _Yes._ Is it funny in most cases? Surprisingly, also yes! This kind of lower denominator humor ties very well with the personality of the main characters, the entire story and concept of it all, and most importantly, the Dav Pilkey children's story books it's based after. Also in the movie itself we can see the older and more serious characters exclaiming how stupid this kind of humor is, so it has a lot of self-awareness on top of just good comedy too. But that's just me, I too despise ''potty humor, the lowest form of wit'' in most cases too, especially the most uninspired ones, which is unsurprisingly the majority.
It makes me sad people wrote it off just as a stupid kids movie when it was genuinely funny in its writing and joke executions without overstaying its welcome. The movie knows its stupid and silly and revels in that rather than acts above others for it.
Fr (i love that movie idc a fuck what ppl say)
Even as a child I was usually disgusted or unsettled by potty humor. I never understood why all the other kids found it so funny
Same. I really don’t understand why people find it funny?

Fart jokes, or just plain farts, can be funny under the right circumstances. It takes a lot of creativity and excellent writing (as a joke), or it takes timing if it's just someone around you farting.
A bad part of fart (and dick) jokes it they are used mostly by hacks and doofuses attempting to force humor or thinking the one fart joke in their movie is hilarious. There are exceptions, like Pumba imo. It fits him as a character and it's not over used with him in the first movie.
Holy shit! Also Shaun of the Dead!!! Me and my wife still pull the, "I'm sorry, (spouse's name)" all the time!
I usually dislike fart jokes, but the bubble bath joke in the third Lion king movie somehow worked.
@@redpanda6497 the reason they suck is basically why jump scares suck. As Dazz said, they use them to fill time when they can't come up with something better.
The Blazing Saddles bit is funny because one of the most common foods they had back then, which could travel easily without going bad, was beans. Often times about all they had was beans and dried meat, so the result is a cacophony of toots. The scene is set up with lots of shots of them eating this specific food with over the top flatulence as a result- not to be realistic but for humor. Basically the beans are the catalyst for the joke in the scene.
It's more of a time period joke than an actual fart joke 😂 It probably was like that at the campfire when all you had to eat was food that made you gassy

@@TheDoctorinspectorI'm so glad I'm not the only one who thought Sing 2 was miles better. I could barely finish the first movie, it took very long to gather the courage to sit through it all. In Sing 2, I at least like the lynx lady, involved with the gorilla's side story (a great way to show how adaptive teaching methods are important - I appreciate it, as a neurodivergent person who changed school to better suit how my brain works). And Poscha is alright. Nice to see a spoiled brat not be entirely blamed when it was her father who failed her, and she tried to be better. I also appreciated how Rosita's husband wasn't angry that she was co-working with another male pig and being friendly (which is present in the first one too). Ash helping the lion was cool. My critisism is that Buster Moon never really learned his lesson properly. He made the same mistakes as in the first one. I remember being about seven, watching trolls, and being annoyed whenever the glitter troll came on screen. I knew he was only there to fart, I knew it was coming, and it just wasn't funny.
I think the logic behind the one from Blazing Saddles is that in a lot of Westerns, cowboys would be shown eating canned beans and almost nothing else, so the movie is just showing what would probably happen.

Did I actually just watch an in-depth analysis about fart jokes in media for 30 minutes?
yes
99% of the time i despise toilet humor so much, but i honestly i think for Pumbaa and Shrek it works very well because of how it's framed and executed. the noise used as a fart for Pumbaa is not some stock sound or imitation of a realistic fart, it sounds more like it's a brass instrument, which makes it fit in with the song/instrumentals going on. it's also the only time (iirc and i hope i do because i love TLK) it happens in the movie. it's a strange predicament for the character that makes it kinda tragic but funny in that ridiculous way at the same time.
for Shrek it was first used to show that he's gross and loves it, and it then becomes a throughline in his family, a weird but for his kind fitting symbol of connection, and especially with him and Fiona i think it's a weirdly charming display of acceptance of the gross stuff you will experience when being in a relationship, and not making a big deal out of it. it also shows they're on the same wavelength and truly made for each other.
Which joke from shrek and which joke from pumbaa?
I can't believe you didn't mention the fart orchestra scene in Captain Underpants. You had the sound byte for it in the intro and outro but I am very much offended it wasn't mentioned. One thing to note is that there is a fart fetish, in general, so you know... could be less of a joke and more some creep trying to satisfy themselves.
21:02 of course this example uses that fact for the comedy. Its not just that Alexa is making the stock sound, its that alexa will whisper back if you whisper to it, which can sound sensual. And combined with the whole fart thing... Yeah, its funny.
In short controlled bursts - fart jokes _can_ work, but when you spray and pray, toilet humour _can_ overstay its welcome. Adam Sandler films are the prime example of toilet humour run amok, the farts are treated as independent jokes, with little overlap between gags, plus, comedians forget what makes fart jokes funny - it's the surprise. The best fart joke I know is in the Revenge of the Pink Panther, when Inspector Clouseau played by Peter Sellers, farts in a elevator while in disguise, the actors expressions really sells the joke, and this is how toilet humour works, it's part of a joke, not the joke itself.
Horror and Humor have very similar types of buildup I find. Just like how you don't use a cat scare as an actual scary moment, but to mess with tension? You don't use a fart as the actual joke, you use it to build up why the actual joke works. Cats aren't scary and farts aren't funny. Cats being the false alarm to set up a greater scare later when the real horror pops out is scary, that same cat being found half-mutated or having been savaged by the monster is scary. Farts that happen at unexpected times or sell a different gag are funny, a fart with reverb is over the top therefore it's funny because the fact you made it THAT over the top is itself funny.
My favorite fart joke ever was in Crash twinsanity. The basic plot of the game is that Crash and his villian doctor Cortex have to work together. And in this one mission, you have to throw Cortex into a rollable pipe.
Cortex then says "im stuck, I've never been so humiliated, stuck in a pipe. Well at least it can't get any worse" then the game goes quiet for a sec before Cortex lets out a tiny fart. And you just hear him whimper about it since he can't move!
I should be sleeping on a school night, but instead i’m watching a half hour video on farting in movies
It's the weakest "joke" you could pull in the movie or show in my opinion, it just sets. Ah yes, so *this* is how the film is going to be. It's going to be one of *those* 😐
I like how the thumbnail and the "no" at the 15 second mark of the video are both straight to the point.
I don't think I've ever actually laughed at a fart joke lol
One of my favorite examples of "The Hotbox" is the one from Robot Chicken where the Saturday morning cartoon villains are carpooling, and Skeletor is just like:"... That was a good one."
Followed by everyone's confusion while Mum-Ra is just hammering his fist on the buttons on the door, screaming "UNLOCK THE WINDOOOOOW!"
No actual fart sound, just the reactions of Mum-Ra, Lex Luther, and Cobra Commander all screaming in horror as Skeletor laughs.
I don’t mind fart jokes but it usually depends on how it’s used for context and how it plays out in a movie or show (animated or live-action for films and TV series), along with timing. There are some fart jokes that work out well and are played for laughs along with being used to play into the character’s personality (e.g. Pumbaa in _The Lion King_ and Piranha In _The Bad Guys)_ and other times they overused it too much where it is random and not funny (the villain in _Master of Disguise)_
farts can actuallly enhance a fire, since they contain methane so the fart jokes from around 8:00 are just even less imppresive
Also the fire can just follow the gas right up your butthole burning it so dangerous.
Personally, the Metroman echoed fart joke is my favorite. Never fails to make me smile when I run across it, and I’ve played it over again a few times. Tighten’s reaction also aids the humor ig.
I had no idea it was that.
That wind effect from metro man does have a canon source. In that shot it’s actually megamind disguised as metro man and using a jet pack to fly, the wind effect is him firing up his jet pack
It mainly depends on how a fart joke is played out in a movie or tv show 😐
I have no issue with that kind of humor
Agreed. It all depends on the context of the situation and how often you use them.
The type of gag I hate more than toilet humor is the slapstick fail gag, which is were a character confidently tries something only to fail epically in a bit of weak physical humor, something I frequently see in comedy movie trailers that leads to the comedy look worse which often is.
The worst one is the Marvel one liners, it completely takes you out of the movie and kinda falls into what your comment said like "huh, that sounded better in my head" or "he's right behind me isn't he?".
@sloft-70 the visual part of the slapstick fail gag is what makes my eyes roll than what is verbally said.
The funniest fart joke I've seen. Was from my 4 year old sister, she made a raspberry on her arm then hit a button on her microphone. Which caused a large applause noise on the Bluetooth speaker.
I recently saw Lion Ling 1½ (it's very good by the way, everyone reading this should watch it), and that was when I declared the joke with the jacuzzi to be the best fart joke ever done. The best ones really are the ones that don't play any sound effect, where it's only implied in some way.

It brings me joy knowing I'm not the only one who hates toilet humor.
If done RIGHT, they can be funny. However, very few people know how to do them right.
Nearly anything can be the subject of a good joke if it's done right. The beginning of this video got a chuckle out of me because it was a good example of juxaposition with Dazz's 'done' expression combined with 'funny' fart music. So yes they can.
The fact that RUclips has come to the point where people are seriously making 30+ minute videos about fart jokes 💀
Since you wanted suggestions, I've always been intrigued by the different ways kids content avoids having a character die. Sometimes it works and feels like a natural end to the story arc and sometimes it's just super vague doesn't work
I wasn't that fond of toilet or slapstick humour even as a kid. Tom and Jerry started frustrating me by the time I was a teen as did toilet humour. It's very low-hanging fruit, and it gets terribly repetitive. It plays on bringing out laughter in awkward or embarrassing situations, rather than actually being witty in any way. But maybe that's just me.
For that fart joke classic that "did it first"... I mean, I understood /why/ they might have farted -- they're full o' beans -- but... it's STILL not funny.
One last edit: Just because the target audience is 5 years and under, doesn't mean they should need to deal with subpar humour. Let them have something high-quality too. They might not fully appreciate it then, but they can still have a laugh and a surface-level appreciation and then have the opportunity to enjoy it more on a rewatch later down the line. Besides, if we allow ourselves to appreciate quality over quantity and show that to hollywood too, maybe we won't be dealing with so much blockbuster and kids' movies exhaustion. Expressing our desire of quality for all age groups might help push for change.
Tom and Jerry literally influenced a lot of its visual humor from silent film actors, like Chaplin and Keaton. It's still incredibly timeless and creatively over-the-top.
Even the more crude side of jokes still hold up.
Fart jokes to me were never funny, they were overrated and weren't't used properly most of the time, they weren't executed well enough which was the reason why I sometimes cringe when a fart joke appears, I kinda wish they were somewhat executed properly and not just randomly placed in any scene or being spammed alot..
Oh yes, you're truly on point when these gas jokes are not executed properly. They seem to exist for cheap laughs
Great video, loved it, do have a mini comment though:
As someone who used captions as a way to reinforce the audio, there were a lot of times where the captions were not in like with the audio, like some thoughts not originally said. While sometimes they can be okay, a lot of times it made the pacing feel rushed even though the video was fine. I would recommend only maybe adding things in the captions if it is a mini thought and not while speaking. It really does wonders for people who use/rely on the captions.
the reverb fart edit of the nemo mines got me...
I'm so terminally online i am currently watching a 30 minute video of some guy over analyzing fart jokes
They're funny irl, but in movies, kinda, no, maybe? Idk
In memes? YEAH DEFINETLY XD
My personal favorites:
The protein shake from Van Wilder
The fart Jake thought would be funny in Adventure Time
The urinal chat from Along Came Polly
The "fart attack" from Parks and Rec
Of course, the Blazing Saddles and Lion King ½ scenes.
The interview fart from Step Brothers
Dexter's Lab episode where Dexter thinks he's going to die
The episode is the Good Place where Bad Janet lets out a fart that lasts through the opening credits and still stinks at the end of the episode.
Family Guy has a few good ones that break the rules you put down.
That Ren and Stimpy episode where he gives birth to a fart
And almost every fart from Bob's Burgers
These rules don't matter. It's all about knowing how to actually write a joke. I've heard the stock fart used and the joke be funny. I've seen farts used as an insult with it being funny. If you have a bias against them then it'll obviously be harder to make you laugh at one. The more I see it, there isn't a growing army of people who hate them. It's more like either you like them or you don't.
The fact that I laughed every single time shows that my humor is beyond repair....God help me.
A video essay about fart jokes. Welp i have nothing else to do on a sunday evening
The ones in the Lion King and Finding Nemo are literally the only smart fart jokes™
Dude I'm 37 and farts and fart jokes will always be hilarious.
Wander over Yonder to me mastered the usage of a fart joke. The Party Poopers is an endless barrage of butt puns and the main comedic throughline is not the puns themselves but Wander trying NOT to laugh and offend a race of aliens with butts for heads. The only fart joke in the entire episode is right at the end and is used as basically the big-payoff for all the puns and innuendo.
Like another comment here said: There's a difference between a joke involving farts and a fart being treated as a joke on its own.
17:34 is still one of the funniest things I've ever had the joy of witnessing.
“i didn’t see this movie, you didn’t see this movie”
HOW DARE YOU, Blazing Saddles is an all-time classic
Hey man, don't be nervous. This is the very first video I've seen of yours, and it caused me to sub. Keep up the stellar work!
The start of this scene is very funny actually. Like I think it's mainly seeing you stare at the camera in annoyance as it happens. Also the deep loud ones at the end kind of adds something.
Just like any other joke, fart jokes all depend on execution
A fart joke is funny when in real life between friends not in artificial scenarios
One fart joke that stuck with me was Austin Powers 2 with Fat Bastard. Similar to the "I'm Sorry" category, he audibly farts in front of everyone, and says "Sorry... I farted". That pointless clarification of something very obvious was hilarious!
I came in all serious, but laughed uncontrollably at the fart montage at the beginning of the video.
i find that comedy itself is very odd as its very different on other people, and fart jokes is an example of unique jokes that people tend to laugh at, while others laugh at dark humor, sexual humor and all around just different types of humor for each and everyone in the world
that long fart joke is unironically more funnier than the fart jokes
Dude. Awesome video. You've said everything I've wanted to say for years. Thank you.
I was hoping you’d mention (or more specifically critique) the fart jokes in Hocus Pocus 2, some of the most forced and completely unnecessarily inserted stock sfx for a highly anticipated sequel. Great video! You made me chuckle!
