  • Can the mini arc furnace melt a handful of marbles? Let's put it to the test to see what happens! In this electric arc furnace experiment, Grant takes marbles to the arc furnace? What do you think will happen? The steps Grant Thompson covers for using an electric arc furnace are super easy. Grant also has a couple of tricks to get the most out of this project. Here’s to another Grant Thompson King Of Random electricity experiment!
    This melted marble project is also great for those wanting to know how to do other cool things with an electric arc furnace: electricity project, melting with electricity, how to make marbles, glass melting, metal making, glass putty, homemade arc furnace making, science projects and more! Let us know what cool arc furnace experiments you create!
    If you’re looking to try something new or for an activity such as: DIY electricity project, melting marbles experiment, cool science experiments, fun weekend project, metal experiment, STEM project, STEM research, or just a fun project with the family, watch the video to learn more.

    Hey, Grant. I've got a really cool idea, not for your carbon rod arc furnace, but for your flower pot propane forge. If you add a bag of foaming agent to molten aluminum, it will create a material called foamed aluminum which has excellent sound-absorbing, impact-absorbing, and heat-shielding abilities. Some advanced forms of this kind of metal foam can even shatter bullets upon impact. Neat, huh?

      Ruperts drop is a drop of glass, which has some special abilities. It is really solid against shock (almost indestructible). Someone tried to actually break it with hydropress, and the drop left a mark in the steel. The fun part is, that if you try to break of the tail of the drop, it shatteres with no strenght at all. Find it on Wiki for more info.

      2 ALDREDZ it is like a solid drop of glass with two parts, the ball end like a regular water droplet, and the thin tail like strand, but the weird property of it is that the big end is super strong like hammer strong, but the tail is delicate and if snapped the whole think will violently explode

      Eh, you might get it to work with something low caliber like a .22lr. Or a low velocity/low pressure round. A .38 might be possible, as long as it's not a +P load. A .45 ACP would shatter, yeah. Probably a 5.56mm too. But..... it'd be interesting to see the attempt at a standard .38 or low pressure 9mm.

    • @jirivexik5629

      Depends on what temperatures you use, but if you melt glass like this probably about 10min running the arc continuously.

      Vexik Velyxor ....tnx

    • @alpine1600s
      @alpine1600s 7 лет назад

      rithwik ramaprasad how long will the electrodes last depends on the amperage and arc length. Also being he is running a carbon rod positive and negative electrodes, electrode consumption is about equal on both ends.
      At $2-3 dollars an electrode from a batterey, repurposing is great if you have dead lantern batteries lying around, but carbon electrodes are available at a competitive price.

      what other experiment do you need? SmarterEveryDay did a slowmo vid shooting it with a GUN and the drop itself didn't break, but the force caused the tail to shatter because of vibrations and THAT caused the drop to shatter.
