I was lucky enough to have the honor and pleasure to interview the talented, beautiful, smart & lovely Carleen Anderson. She is so very special! This song is right on point - fits today in this times of madness.
Here I am in 2022 still yearning an SlappN this track for its smooth and sultry appeal . Queen Anderson lays the vocals w/ a domineering style fit for the universe !!! The Young Disciples is far above an beyond many groups 2day … Feeling The Young Disciples 4EVER ✨🌎✨🌎✨🌎✨🌎✨ 🌎✨🌎✨
i never knew mick talbot played keys and johnny lytle played vibes on this! omg, this track (and the album) are epic and beyond. i just wanna be free enough to do my thang! as a 25yr old white guy from the US (and a subscriber to straight no chaser at the time) this album really opened my eyes to the world. i am forever greatful for the young disciples.
I was lucky enough to be in the studio for some of the album being laid down, so I know Paul Weller was also involved. He is credited elsewhere on the album, guitarist, but I saw him do more than that, including helping play percussion at times. I'm not sure if he's on this track but my hazy memory has a feeling he played a little part.
There’s many gems of the Acid Jazz era of the 1990s - Omar, Galliano, Jamiroquai, Talkin Loud label and countless acts from Japan -however this by far is my favorite.
Facts! When I play this music people look @ me like it just came out?!! This was The Continuation of Soul/Jazz & Rhythm without the Blues… enough misery!😎🖤♥️💚🌍
I was born in the dark With no light that shined on me With no silver spoon in my mouth I am strong, with good heart And despite the crimes I see I will go far from doom and work it out But in your mind all I do Is keep wandering and gathering, spear chucking and dancing You imply I must prove to you that I deserve freedom Well I deserve freedom The chains bind my feet, but they can not bind my soul Which is free to live to love and to choose I will claim victory throughout suffering and woe You will see what we give of us to you Still in your mind all we do Is keep wandering and gathering, spear chucking and dancing You imply we must prove to you that we deserve freedom We deserve freedom Coz I am not hurting you So why keep hurting (a right to live A right to love A right to choose For me, not you) I can live anywhere that I want I can love anyone that I want I should have the right to choose (a right to live A right to love A right to choose For me, not you) Although you don't want me to live I am existing And you keep resisting But I keep persisting (a right to live A right to love A right to choose For me, not you) Wanting, wanting, wanting, wanting to be free (II) WANTING To achieve the goals I've been searching for Heading towards them coz freedom I've been working for To break the shackles that ties me and binds me To leave all problems and troubles way behind me To be free, but freedom it begins Within the self so don't shelf self discipline To be wanting but lacking in the energy Don't let your self be your own worst enemy To see the light at the end of the tunnel The search for freedom it starts by being humble So separate from materialistic values Pick up yourself and stand firm like a statue Wanting to make the dream become reality To right my wrongs and fix the flaws and the fallacys That maybe makes me unsavoury as a person Thirst goes unquenched and problems still worsen A want for freedom wont gel with being complacent Said you was free but I sensed a false statement Wanting to be or not to be That is the question Do you agree or disagree with the suggestion That freedom don't depend on money or what you got A rich mans mind can also be chained and locked Up in the mind lies the road to the freedom Negative thoughts weed 'em, positive thoughts breed 'em Get yourself involved in the activity Feel the rhapsody of freedom from captivity IM WANTING I just wanna be free I just wanna be free enough to do my thing To unlock the door to a closed mind To broaden scopes and horizons not to be blind To walk down the straight and narrow path That leads to freedom I believe this is my only task To join others who also want to see The direction they're headed and view it with clarity Not to be tied to things that held them back And wallow in self pity to reveal a lack Of get up and go Freedom is just a stones throw away Not wanting to be lead astray Came to terms with this coz it was my choice ta Seek out my freedom now the world is my oyster But... motivation this is a nescessity Self expression an ingredient of the recipie of FREEDOM Which I look upon as a meal and the flavours of the meal only YOU can reveal To keep on moving on from strength to strength No not half step but trek to the full length Of the freedom course, using the main source Of inner strength mind powers a powerful force To leave behind the bag that failed to uplift me To move on swiftly and make these chains history So Get to grips with this task with a vengeance And throw away all these fragments and remnant Of all the times I lacked in self belief So I turned a new leaf And found peace And am released Into FREEDOM (III) TO BE FREE a right to live a right to love a right to chose for ME not YOU

It’s effing stupid that no record label has done a reissue 3CD/vinyl/digital reissue of this album and all its b-sides and remixes. Young Disciples deserved so much more attention than they got

It's a pearl : funk, rap, hip-hop, jazz. One of the best albums of this "introuvable" new british soul in the 90s.

I loveeeeee this band and this song!
The best ever song by The Young Disciples. An absolute classic
timeless.
An amazing album, the sound of Camden. I remember living in flat share and playing this all the time.
So many good memories, JazzFM Gilles Peterson Saturday afternoons.....
True classic that stands the test of time!
Stone. Cold. Classic. I'll carry this music with me until it's my time.
This is one of the best grooves of the 90's - 1991 - fantastic
smoked many a spliff to these tunes in my hay day.
Doobie smoming music all right. Same here. It makes it sound even more beautiful then...
Incredible tune...STELLAR!
Their Masterpiece! 🎶💞🎸😎
Defined the sentiment of my community then and now.

Mick is also all over the first three studio albums by Galliano.

The acid jazz era was the best
Great records like this are always timeless! One of my all time favorites...
It was Always in my intro … I love Young Disciples
One album ever released by Young Disciples. The only one. How unfortunate. This is timeless stuff.
Masterpiece, period!
I was born in the dark
With no light that shined on me
With no silver spoon in my mouth
I am strong, with good heart
And despite the crimes I see
I will go far from doom and work it out
But in your mind all I do
Is keep wandering and gathering, spear chucking and dancing
You imply I must prove to you that I deserve freedom
Well I deserve freedom
The chains bind my feet, but they can not bind my soul
Which is free to live to love and to choose
I will claim victory throughout suffering and woe
You will see what we give of us to you
Still in your mind all we do
Is keep wandering and gathering, spear chucking and dancing
You imply we must prove to you that we deserve freedom
We deserve freedom
Coz I am not hurting you
So why keep hurting
(a right to live
A right to love
A right to choose
For me, not you)
I can live anywhere that I want
I can love anyone that I want
I should have the right to choose
(a right to live
A right to love
A right to choose
For me, not you)
Although you don't want me to live
I am existing
And you keep resisting
But I keep persisting
(a right to live
A right to love
A right to choose
For me, not you)
Wanting, wanting, wanting, wanting to be free
(II) WANTING
To achieve the goals I've been searching for
Heading towards them coz freedom I've been working for
To break the shackles that ties me and binds me
To leave all problems and troubles way behind me
To be free, but freedom it begins
Within the self so don't shelf self discipline
To be wanting but lacking in the energy
Don't let your self be your own worst enemy
To see the light at the end of the tunnel
The search for freedom it starts by being humble
So separate from materialistic values
Pick up yourself and stand firm like a statue
Wanting to make the dream become reality
To right my wrongs and fix the flaws and the fallacys
That maybe makes me unsavoury as a person
Thirst goes unquenched and problems still worsen
A want for freedom wont gel with being complacent
Said you was free but I sensed a false statement
Wanting to be or not to be That is the question
Do you agree or disagree with the suggestion
That freedom don't depend on money or what you got
A rich mans mind can also be chained and locked
Up in the mind lies the road to the freedom
Negative thoughts weed 'em,
positive thoughts breed 'em
Get yourself involved in the activity
Feel the rhapsody of freedom from captivity
IM WANTING
I just wanna be free
I just wanna be free enough to do my thing
To unlock the door to a closed mind
To broaden scopes and horizons not to be blind
To walk down the straight and narrow path
That leads to freedom
I believe this is my only task
To join others who also want to see
The direction they're headed and view it with clarity
Not to be tied to things that held them back
And wallow in self pity to reveal a lack
Of get up and go
Freedom is just a stones throw away
Not wanting to be lead astray
Came to terms with this coz it was my choice ta
Seek out my freedom now the world is my oyster
But... motivation this is a nescessity
Self expression an ingredient of the recipie of FREEDOM
Which I look upon as a meal
and the flavours of the meal only YOU can reveal
To keep on moving on from strength to strength
No not half step but trek to the full length
Of the freedom course, using the main source
Of inner strength mind powers a powerful force
To leave behind the bag that failed to uplift me
To move on swiftly and make these chains history
So Get to grips with this task with a vengeance
And throw away all these fragments and remnant
Of all the times I lacked in self belief
So I turned a new leaf
And found peace
And am released
Into FREEDOM
(III) TO BE FREE
a right to live
a right to love
a right to chose
for ME
not YOU
❤🖤💚

Side 2 of a great album was this sublime "suite"... still gives me the chills when I take the time to really listen with no distractions 🎵❤😎
