Kind of yeah, but the NBA is a business and eventually in my option things might sour. In my opinion, player loyalty should be gained from treating your best players with care via pay and putting the right pieces around them to succeed.

Why be loyal to people who would get rid of you when you don't serve their purposes and would never care if you couldn't play. I'm good with guys being more loyal to their dreams themselves and their families over an organization. It's a business at the end of the day and none of them owners would be loyal to a player despite their own self interests.

One thing I think lebron brought attention to is that organizations have no excuse to not do their best to put a team around a superstar and now players, deservedly so, have little patience after their rookie extension to stick around

@@iluvdissheet I mean it’s a couple of things. As you said, no one really has to notoriety that lebron has especially since he’s won a championship with every move so it might be harder for teams to take a harden or lillard as seriously when neither of them have been to the finals. Lebron was also more strategic in his timing for when he move at least to Miami where they would have the cap space to do so. Durant did the same when cape space exploded in 2016-2017 where he was able to go to golden state and get a raise from his salary at okc. That’s really hard to time and be patient for especially when one injury ruins the whole process. It explains why harden and kyrie’s trades went so quickly on top of them not having the most value. Lastly a lot of guys that are in these talks are not in a situation like lebron in his first stint in Cleveland. Embiid, Giannis and dame have front offices that are clearly trying their best to win with them but have had difficulty actually doing so and that happens. I wouldn’t be surprised if part of say dame’s hesitation to leave is the KD situation with okc. As soon as dame said he wanted to be trade, a small but very vocal minority started turning on him even though he deserves the trade. People in Portland have an attachment to him through “investing” in the team so when he asks to leave they feel cheated despite dame doing more that enough to earn wanting a trade out

Not gonna lie this is true, players should understand the leverage they hold and the responsibility a front office should have
maybe attention for kids^^ - chamberlain, jabbar, barkley, shaq just to name a few - the only thing lebron bought attention to a how to get teams together were its a must to win a title
It’s not fair that a team gets to waste 8+ years of a players prime, only to label that player disloyal when they finally try to go to a situation of their choice. Not only am I happy that players are speaking up more and demanding trades more but I wish players would refuse to let certain teams draft them. Like Kobe did, and like Elway and Eli did in football.

The best outcome in recent years was OKC trading PG and Westbrook. It was clear that the team had plateaued and all parties involved moved on to the next phase amicably and neither too early or too soon. Contrast that with Harden sabotaging a contender in Philly and Portland waiting waaaaay too long to deal Lillard.

The worst outcome of loyalty meanwhile is Demar Derozan. Was a franchise player for the Raptors and was loyal, never complained. What happened instead, he got disposed of. Yeah it worked out for the organization in the end since they immediately won a ring, but that just means players are replaceable, no matter how much of a star you are.
Harden didn't sabotage shit. He took a pay cut, to help the team. That pay cut turned into Harrel and PJ Fuckin Tucker. The told him to become a facilitator, which he did, best pg in the East. Why is Harden even there? Because the sixers got fraidy cat feelings about Simmons. Harden or Embiid need to play with the same kind of player and that player is not each other, Philly needs someone like Klay Thompson, or Mike Porter Jr, someone to space the floor and catch and shoot. Philly cant beat Miami, and they can't beat Boston, and that is on Embiid, not Harden.
The nba is a business first. There never was any "loyalty" players just did not have as much power but players has always demanded trades or wanted to leave. Whether or not they can get what they want or not is the issue. Ask Scottie pippen. Back then teams use to do whatever they wanted to their players and if they are injured etc teams just dumped them. Now that players take control of their career, fans want to be mad as if they dont do it in their regular lives with their normal careers... and the nba teams uses that sentiment to continue to blame the players. And gullible fans fall for it everytime ..Its called business and there is no loyalty in business.

Now if buddy wants to talk about player loyalty then make the argument that the organizations went above and beyond to ensure that a player was given the keys to be successful. Only player I can think of that fits that category is probably James Harden.

Well said. Loyalty was never something that was widely shared by all of the players in any era. The reason why so many players stuck to their teams in the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and most of the 80’s was because there was no free agency at that point, and a lot of players were basically stuck on their squad unless they demanded a trade. Guys like Kareem, Oscar and Wilt were the ones who were able to force their way out of their teams because they didn’t get the support they needed. Even Magic almost forced his way out of the Lakers in just his 3rd season.

I think KGs career really showed players loyalty isn’t worth it, KG stayed loyal to a garbage franchise, was basically forced to pick a trade destination and only got to compete one year before injuries/ decline. KG could be a three time champion or more if he left earlier.

Loyalty is a concept in this context to keep laborers from negotiating their worth. As any role player how loyalty works in this league. It’s always been a myth used to get players to be grateful and given the makeup of the athletes in the NBA we can see how that can be taken.

The lack of loyalty becomes an issue not on the player side, not on the team side, but the fan side. I hear it time and time again of people not wanting to get back into basketball because of all the team hopping.

The whole loyalty thing is only worth it if you have a team and organization around you that's actually doing something. Steph in golden state has been great. He does his part, the org does theirs, no reason for him to leave. On the other end is dame and Portland. He's basically been the only thing keeping them relevant and they've given him nothing in return. He should have left earlier than he did.
I think part of the dilemma could also be that if you have one or two max players it severely limits the pieces you can surround your star(s) with under this cap system. I think it would be different if a star player sacrificed money to help the team get under the cap and the team burns that player (like James Harden) than expecting max money, multiple all stars and championships. Currently, there has to be sacrifices made on both sides.

I think most people misunderstand loyalty in the league, it's a business not a relationship loyalty to me should mean both the players and the FO are on the same page. The organization has to do their best to help further ur career and u have an obligation to help the organization win or become better, basically just a mutually beneficial partnership but there are organizations that go beyond that givning special treament to certain players and people expect that to happen for everyone. At the end of the day to me it comes down to are we in this together or not if a player and org are in the same page and communicate with each other to fix the teams problems along with being a big part of the community, that's loyalty. A loyal organization shouldn't pull a raptors with demar where they kept saying they weren't gonna trade him only to do it a week later and a loyal player shouldn't pull a Vince Carter and force the entire fanbase to hate him. Even looking at the best organizations they have great relationships and are extremely loyal with their players like gsw spurs and the heat all have had very few problems regarding loyalty
You’re right, that’s what people don’t seem to understand, the NBA is a business just like any other industry, job or profession out there. So when a player requests a trade or doesn’t resign with their old team, it has nothing to do with loyalty, it’s about opportunity and a chance to improve. So the people who are talking about NBA teams doing players dirty like Isaiah Thomas with the Celtics by trading him, or calling players disloyal when they request a trade or leave in FA, those people no nothing about business or how it works. I’ll make it pretty simple. What happens when an employee is performing poorly at their job, they get fired. What happens when someone gets offered a higher position at twice the salary, they resign and take the new job. Contrary to popular belief, an employee who stays in the same position with the same company for 15-20 years is a rarity, including the NBA which is also a business. The average tenure of an employee in the business world is only about 4 years. That number applies to the NBA as well, it’s just like any other business.
The Dame situation is the prime example of why NBA players owe their franchises nothing. He was literally the most loyal player possible, a guy with HOF talent who stuck with a flailing franchise. And what did he get for his loyalty? He got backstabbed. The Trailblazers have claimed over the past few years that they were still committed to building around Dame and yet over that time period they’ve drafted players with the obvious intention of rebuilding. He gave them his loyalty. They gave him nothing. That’s messed up as hell. NBA players should not be expected to be loyal to these mfs

This player empowerment thing only applies to about 15 players out of maybe 450. That’s 3%. Since that 3% pretty much drive interest in the sport, they have a special kind of leverage that’s unique to all of pro sports that I follow. At the end of the day, the owners still have all of the power. They just let this 3% call some of the shots because it aligns with their bottom lines. Let’s be real here

Loyalty isn't a word I'd consider for this. It's more of the issue about what player/s identify each team.
I used to memorize each team's names based on their franchise superstars. For example, we used to say Ray Allen and Supersonics interchangeably. When those same stars switched teams, it's usually an indication that they're out of their prime.
Nowadays, we can barely do that anymore.

I think a huge part of this loyalty issue is that people (the fans) are more loyal to certain players than franchises. Look at how many Lebron fans have Cleveland, Miami, and Laker jerseys. He's not alone either. Lots of fans have followed KD to his new teams. They are certainly loyal city fans, but unless you live in that city or in close proximity, you have no obligation to continue to root for a team that is dog water. So instead, rural fans pick the players they enjoy watching and they watch them!

I personally have believed that "loyalty" in the NBA has been viewed at in skewed lenses in the past 10+ years. We think that because Larry Bird, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan all won their accolades in the same jersey they were drafted by, that every player that we think can be an all-time great after them must do the same in order to be validated. But the thing is, most owners that have big name players are owners of small market teams and it costs a lot of money to realistically purse a championship. And most owners aren't willing to pay X+ in order to get their star player that he needs to win. So, with that in mind, free agency and trades are totally justified, and players need to do what they need to in order to win.
Agreed. People point to Lebron as ruining “Loyalty” but it’s always been this way. Even in the 70’s, Kareem forced his way out of Milwaukee because he didn’t like how the organization was run and that paid off great for him. And in the 90’s Shaq left Orlando because they wouldn’t pay him the money that he deserved, and that also lead to him winning. So it’s always been there despite people looking at Jordan, Bird and Magic through rose colored glasses.

I've never understood why the NBA (and sports) community valued loyalty so much.
Because of people reliving the “Glory days” of Magic, Bird, Kobe, Duncan, Dirk and Jordan having their success on just one team (While forgetting Jordan’s Wizards stints) so people hold those standards to today’s players for some reason. Even though there’s always been players who have had championship success on multiple teams (Kareem, Shaq, Wilt)

The main reason there's no loyalty is because the NBA or owners of NBA teams only care about themeselves. Look what happened to Isaiah Thomas in 2017 when they traded him to the Cavs after his hip injury, or the racism against Jeremy Lin with him being forced out of the NBA completely never to return or even D Rose after his injury and getting traded out of Chicago...the list goes on and on as to why it makes no logical sense to be blindly loyal to an organization that is more than happy to throw you under the bus if it potentially makes them more money.

It never should have existed. Teams never really have it. Most trade aging players or when they get hurt. Teams have never been expected to be loyal. Just do whats best for team. Players shouldve been expected to do the same for themselves.

In general you are right but their are some exceptions imo. I think Jokic will only ever play for the Nuggets, and both Denver and GSW could win any given year with Jokic and Steph on their teams, so i dont think it would be a bad idea for them to stay. As the saying goes, they are the exception that proves the rule.
