Thank you! I was raised a Wesleyan Methodist in Indiana. After our merger with the Pilgrim Holiness Church, we became the Wesleyan denomination. After moving to a part of SC where there were no Wesleyan churches close, my husband and I joined the United Methodist Church. I knew some of this history, but I definitely learned so much from this RUclips video. Thank you so much!
Thanks for the lesson. I found it interesting and informative. To those who are speaking out against this video please consider that this isn't a Gospel lesson and isn't meant to be. Nothing will ever replace the inspired word of God. Jesus is the way, the truth and the life - there's no other way. This video is simply a history lesson on how a specific denomination came to be. Haven't you ever wondered how the Baptists, Catholics, Methodists, Anglicans etc. developed? I have. In addition to professing faith in Christ, I've also heard people say "I'm Baptist" or "I'm Methodist", but without an understanding of what that means. I seek to understand the difference and that's why I liked this video.
Ashbury and Coke left from my little village of Pill, Somerset near Bristol in England. When John Wesley visited Pill in 1755 he said “a place famous for stupid, brutal, abandoned wickedness! I remember when the American monument was placed in Pill in the early 80s and Pill was full of Americans who came to watch it and I was dressed up as a young a young lad in traditional clothing. It’s also worth saying that when Cabot left in 1497 to find the Americans it’s said he left from Bristol and was piloted by James George Ray of Pill. As the river took more than 1 tide to navigate the Matthew probably left from Pill in Somerset as it was the last place on the river you could moor..
Thank you Ted, for this fine work. Felt like I was back in your class! I'm sharing it with my congregation to teach/remind folks of the ground from which we come.
I find nothing wrong with learning the history of this Methodist movement. For those who would be interested can find good reference in this presentation. If it doesn’t interest you then move on and leave your holier than thou comments to yourself.
My grandmother was a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. And she shared much of this history with us. Especially the part of Richard Allen who is noted as the founder of of the AME Church. They were heavily discriminated against in the Methodist church; not allowed to kneel at the alter or take communion at the alter. Black congregants were forced to stay in the back of the church or up in the balcony, unable to freely come down to worship. It’s a very dark part of US history that Black people had to create opportunities for themselves in several arenas including education, business, and even worship.
I have been reading Methodism: Empire of the Spirit by David Hempton. This is a good summary of his scholarly work with expansion on the various subdivisions of the body..

The more traditionalist group (but liberal with respect to worship) will be called the Global Methodist Church (GMC). The other group has not taken a name -- might be the continuing UMC?
My grandfather, Rev.Theophilus McCoy, was a horseback circuit-riding preacher in Maryland. He would be very disappointed to see what the Methodist Church has become.
Methodist denomination, founded by John Wesley. Catholic Church, founded by Jesus Christ. (Former Methodist here. Thank God the Holy Spirit got me off Meth.)
Is there anything in this video that suggests that Methodist preaching centers on Wesley's understanding as opposed to God's word? Have you actually watched it?
You may have got some bad information. The United Methodist Church considers "homosexual practice" to be "contrary to Christian teaching" and doe ot allow "self-avowed, practicing homosexuals" to be ordained or appointed for ministry. Our most conservative groups ordained women first, and the most liberal groups were the last to ordain women.
This is one of the big problems a lot of us non-Methodists have. We look at UMC Articles Of Religion and see what you're supposed to believe, practice, teach, etc, etc, but then in real life we see UMC churches who completely ignore those tenets and do their own thing. My local UMC church has a female pastor who teaches her congregation that all religions are equally valid, God loves everyone just the way they are and there's no need to change anything about yourself, and she marries gay couples. She's been operating with full impunity for many years even though her apostasy has been thoroughly documented and reported. It's hard to have any respect for this.
A local free methodist pastor husband, shepard allows the abomination of the family by abandoning a widow and orphans. He allowed the testamony of his spouse to take authority over children rather than reaching out to preserve the family. Moving against the poor and needy. He allowed the Ten Commandments Abandonment and Biblical Precepts to the Principality and Power of the world. His pastoral position handed down by his family name. No freedom from slavery for the children and threat of imprisonment to the widow. NO HELP..NO Father showing the Love of Our Triune Lord. The Calling Of a Christian is to Love your neighbor as yourself. The greatest commandment is love. Jesus leaves the 99 to go after the one. By the order of Melchizedek, Genesis 14: 18-20..who blessed Abram/Abraham out of whom came the Chosen People. Hebrews 7:3-4. King of Salem, King Of Peace
When you watch the video (I cannot believe that with this comment you have watched it) please let me know where it claims that Methodism is "not from the Bible."

Interesting that the inclusion of women is so widely celebrated when the Bible clearly denounces the practice. Yet, when denying full inclusion to gays and lesbians the Bible is quickly quoted. That's why this debate is so ridiculous. We go against the Bible in favor of modern practice all the time.
This was hard to get through. My grandmother is a lifelong Methodist and only a year ago my life energy spread to her and the thirst for knowledge was implanted. She has woken up from the dream. Thought I would check out the history of the place that has siphoned her money and time and replaced free thinking with ideology and scare tactics. This group is nothing more than a BUSINESS. Edit: CORPORATION FOR MONETARY BENEFIT AND CULTURAL DEPRIVATION ;-)
Those wo claim they are "non-denominational" do actually follow denominational patterns. I think it's more honest to admit that than to claim that we're not "denominational."
This is a horrendous accusation you've made here against a fellow follower and worshiper of Jesus Christ. You cannot have seriously viewed this video and made this accusation. I would ask you to either document this horrendous claim you have made, or repent of it as publicly as you have made it.
People of good will read scripture in different ways..... understand Jesus teachings in different ways.... baptist understand different ....then pentecostals or Methodist.... two people can both say I just follow Jesus and understand it dramatically different ways.......
Really, why is what John Wesley said in 18th century so important than than Bible. They all were led by the Holy Spirit preach, we now need people like Paul and Wesley to also preach not their stories.
Who said that "what John Wesley said in 18th century so important than than Bible"? No Methodists I know would say something so arrogant, and the video that I give here makes no such monstrous claim. Please be careful in accusing fellow Christians unless you can actually demonstrate that they teach the monstrous things you want to accuse them of teaching.

Very good survey about the long history of the Methodism in U.S.A. Ted Campbell is a talented teacher.
Ted Campbell gives a good refresher summary of our church history worth reviewing now and then.

Great Survey of Methodist Church history!
Did the United Methodist Church run any residential schools in the United States? I believe it did in Canada.
Ted does a great job in reviewing the major events and persons who responded to a movement of God called "Methodist."
A very enjoyable and concise synopsis of Methodism and its Brethren Holiness denominations.

Is it really a good thing to boast the Methodist Church root is from the Church of England and not from the Bible?
Never met anyone who boasted of this.
When you watch the video (I cannot believe that with this comment you have watched it) please let me know where it claims that Methodism is "not from the Bible."
It is the history.
how can someone in the 18th century can start a religion group and claim its origin to Jesus 1700 years after the birth of Jesus?
Why does the Methodist not follow Gods word on Preachers, deacons, teachers etc. etc in 1st Timothy and 2nd Timothy?
Why do the Methodist need a book of discipline made by mans interpretation when we have one from Father Creator
So what is your interprertation
@@cap6tee9 my thoughts are if we do what Father Creator wrote in the sacred text we would not need man's interpretation

Your understand of scripture is formed by the ministers at the church you attend.
